Guild Wars 2

It scales you up to the max level whenever you're doing pvp, or something like that. Also, all gear is the same in pvp.

Well, gear can be customized based on build, runes, and mogs. But all gear is approximately the same power level.

To elaborate on that, if you choose to do "structured PVP" or sPVP in Guild Wars 2 terms (the equivalent of Battlegrounds/Arenas in WoW), your character automatically gains max level.

You are automatically given access to:
- All skills available for your class
- A Lv80 amount of "talent points" in GW2 terms to distribute as you please for your class
- All baseline Lv80 PVP gear, weapons, armor etc to customise at your leisure

So everyone is really on 'equal footing' other than your personal skill.

1. Is Necromancer the profession for DoT play-style?

To elaborate on this - every profession has a different skillset for buttons 1-5 depending on which weapon(s) you prefer to use. For example, I play a Mesmer who uses mainly a staff; the primary damage I do (besides from my profession spells, f1-f4) are DoT. While necros certainly are DoT damage, they can also set their focus to tanking/healing/support just as well as a mesmer can do DoT damage.

Aka, try out a bunch of the professions, you'd be surprised at how much changing your weapon changes your experience!

Mesmer bis fun - https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/professions/mesmer/

But basically, they summon illusions of themselves with surprisingly lifelike AI. Then they can explode their illusions to deal a ton of damage, slow their enemies, confuse their enemies, or become shortly immune to damage. It's incredibly confusing in a battle, let alone a group battle. The way in which you summon your illusions differs by weapon; some of them can be extremely confusing to tell apart from the actual character, making the mesmer unbelievably fun in pvp. Also, we have a blink that shoots you where you click :D.

Mesmers are probably best built for cc/punishment rather than damage. I've seen a lot of Mesmer players report their damage is nowhere near as significant as other classes, it's not one of their strengths.

They are a "mage" class that specialise in using debuffs to punish/cripple the enemy, while at the same time buff their own team - I would consider them best built as a offensive support class... if the Mesmer is doing their job, your team will wreck in PVP.

I'm playing a mesmer as well. I played Mesmer back in GW1 but it's changed quite a bit since then.

So far it seems our illusions do nothing but autoattack.... i'm still not even lv10 so it might not be the case later on? But the illusions have been able to take aggro off monsters

However in a PVP situation I think illusions aren't going to fool experienced players at all - in fact it's going to be a bit of a learning curve for PVP mesmers to learn to "pretend" to be an illusion, by autoattacking for a few seconds on the spot etc etc.

I was really reluctant to play the PVE content, but I think that'll be the best way for me to master the Mesmer class - rather than jump into sPVP right at lv80. It was like getting the Lv80 Scroll baby in WoW - i had no idea how to play it......

Well said. My main alt is an elementalist; the damage is on another scale completely. However, a 3 point mind wrack is nothing to shake your finger at...

Also, despite weaker damage output I've yet to have any serious trouble 1v1 (with the slight exception of really smart thieves and guardians that REFUSE to die), primarily because with the mesmer's deception spells I can avoid an immense amount of damage.

@Purse, have you unlocked Chaos Storm with the staff yet? That spell is beyond fun.

Try messing around with Phase Retreat's mechanics; it has an interesting skill cap, as you can switch directions or the way you aim with it - you'll see what I mean when you mess with it (the Staff '2' spell).
As for utility skills, try playing with Decoy, Mirror Images, and/or Blink+any summon spell. Suuuper confusing if done right.

But to a certain extent you're right, it's just that 3 extra enemies running around often scares away or confuses the other team. I imagine as people start to understand GW2 pvp better mesmers will become less confusing. Hopefully by that point I'll have mastered my ele :p
For now though, I thoroughly enjoy dominating people haha

Yes I just unlocked all my staff skills just before...

Chaos Storm is just uber. Love it.

What are you using as a MH/OH combo? I'm still experimenting with them.

I use Scepter/Pistol as my weapon switch to do as much damage as possible when my staff spells are on cooldown, while still being at range. In pvp, I runed my scepter to freezing, so that every time I switch I CC everyone in melee range. Reaaaalllllly happy with my setup right now - With staff I throw out all my deception/illusions/CCs, then switch weapons, blow all my damage cooldowns and am ready to switch back to staff.

Also, try out Sword/Torch for some major lulz - a ton of damage as well as just simply being fun.

Ultimately, use what you enjoy or you feel comfortable with. Each shines better with a different player or situation; I could definitely imagine a sword/pistol or x/torch mesmer doing some serious work. Or even the focus 4 spell... the time warp? That spell could do some really fascinating things.

Well actually now I'm getting over the Mesmer (for PVE anyway). I'm gonna play my mages PVP exclusive.

I'm thinking of rolling either a Warrior/Guardian - I know GW2 has done away with the "tank - healer - dps" trinity.... but I"m really looking for something similar to a main tank in WoW.

I want:
- To be able to take a lot of hits
- To stand in the front line and soak up damage for my party/friends
- To cc enemies or heal allies when the fight goes bad

Basically a dedicated "tank" toon for PVE, since that's always been my fav role in WoW dungeons.

Any suggestions based on your experience? Seems like the Guardian is quite simlar to Pally, and Warrior is like Warrior. HARD TO PICK!!!!

All the servers are at full capacity; I'm not sure why A-net didn't expect this. They don't use 'grind addiction' or many randomized reward schedules. Its hard to believe people would get hooked on this from an outside perspective. However, this game is the next generation of MMO. You can expect every skilled twink to be here within 2 years.

  • No grind -- isn't the gear treadmill at end game a large reason why we twink?
  • Actual balance -- wouldn't it be nice if all classes were balanced?
  • Skill determines outcome -- you did everything right but still lost? Come to gw2, where this doesn't happen.

We have trebuchets:
