Favorite Twink Expansion

What was your favorite expansion for twinks? What is the reason being? Private server experience doesn't count since you can't factor in community and bracket activity.

I started playing f2p in late Cata, so I never got into it much and was a complete noob.

Once I became invested in MoP, I found the Aeriepeak twinking community for f2p one of the best experiences I've had in one single bracket. Using f2p addon and group up against 24s was the core motive for most f2p in the bracket. Killing 24 spriests was so satisfying.

When WoD came around, the 20-29 bracket wasn't very preferable. The 19 bracket hooked me in, and I had some of the most competitive games with many of the greats who returned to the bracket after years. Very toxic, but fun nonetheless.

Legion came around and this was when I spent more time in endgame than twinking, simply because stat normalization and pvp templates made nearly every bracket feel super stale. Sadly my only source of enjoyment came from endgame PvE. Twinking communities had gone to shit, but people still stuck around.. Granted, this was when I had the most account progression due to attention to endgame.

BFA is the shining light at the end of a long and dark tunnel. It's unfortunate they nerfed set bonuses, and the stat squish made most gear feel similar in effectiveness. But what gave many of the brackets a lot of opportunity was the ability to use enchants and gemslots against opponents in instanced pvp, as well as trinket procs. Professions help alot, too. The best thing is, we can face off against xp-on! This means unlimited queues for all brackets! Twinks may not feel as powerful as they did in MoP, but they're surely much more welcomed and expansive in opportunity.

I have no doubt in my mind that this is going be an unpopular opinion: I like Warlords of Draenor. Not because I think it was the best environment for twinking, but simply because that is the expansion during which I learned the most about twinking, and made friends in the community. I wasn't really serious about twinking in the previous expansions.

The system which scaled your low-level gear up (along with the stats on that gear) to match your level in the BG was complex and intricate. I enjoyed studying and theory-crafting that system.

WotLK 60 AV was lots of fun and fun on the forums, but TBC 29 and 39 was the best community overall... but only lasted me until 60 AV. I mean... how do you really choose an expansion? Item scaling (while it lasted) in WoD was the most fun I had maybe ever but that was the worst expansion ever too.

I vote all of them. Sorry. (tho legion and stat templates kinda sucked.)

fav xpacs for me twink wise are mop for nostalgia if its been long enough to call it that and bfa

wotlk and mop will forever hold a special place in my heart as my favs all round tho

Super unpopular opinion but Legion F2P was the most balanced pvp twinking has ever seen.

Close second for Wrath/Cata era Nightfall 39s.

My favorite & most memorable expansion for twinking was cataclysm.

I distinctively remember the 40v40 AV games on my 70s...
Farming WOTLK Drakes on my 70s...(At the time, mounts weren't account-wide)
Making a name for myself back when it mattered (before all the server merges & cross-realm BS)

The game had a much better community then.
At the time, I played on Thunderhorn then slowly transferred over to Kel'Thuzad as MOP hit, so I was not exposed to all the toxic players of BH, DS, etc...

I'm surprised to say this, but BfA takes top honors for me for the best twink expansion so far. Better than TBC, Wrath, Cata, and MoP. I have a lot of great things to say about those expansions, but they also had some big challenges that I think people forget.

TBC had decent class balance for 29s and 39s, and it's no accident that a lot of old-school players compare BfA to TBC. But back then, the gear disparity between twinks and nontwinks led to more frequent blowout games when twinks did show up.

Wrath laid the foundation for a lot of the community building that influences twinks to this day, including some of the greatest organized efforts ever seen in the 29-59 brackets. But people forget that each bracket struggled with the conflicting aims of casual vs. hardcore twinks, and all four of those brackets eventually collapsed at the end of the expansion as a result.

Cata saw the most egregious burst damage ever put forth in WoW. I played every live bracket from 19s to 80-84 (spent the most time in 70s) and learned a lot from the difficult games. Lailu and Kiendro's qlist app/site saved the midbrackets at the beginning of the expansion, and trolls killed the midbrackets (sometimes multiple times).

MoP slightly (and I do mean only slightly) eased the burst, and some of the conflicting elements of each twink bracket subcommunity finally made some strides to work toward better games. I don't remember much beyond that, other than @Chops talking me and a couple of mutual friends into giving F2Ps a try. That experience with 20s on Korgath, organized by Kochi, remains one of my best twinking experiences in the game.

To continue in @Roboartist 's footsteps, BfA feels like the light at the end of a long tunnel. I left in WoD, stopping by in Legion only briefly to do a little Invasion Pre-event gearing, and finding little to keep me. Here in BfA, Blizzard's simple addition of community channels made the single biggest impact on twinking that WoW has ever seen. Decent gearing is easy and BiS gearing is hard for all brackets. Gearing information travels fast both within and between brackets. Some brackets see a big difference between twinks and non-twinks, but nobody dies in a global like in Cata or MoP. Yeah, PuGmades contribute to seriously imbalanced games thanks to Blizzard's ailing matchmaking system, but the aforementioned communication helps factions coordinate a little better.

There's still plenty of room (and low hanging fruit) to make twinking and instanced PvP in general better than what it is now, but BfA is already the best twink expansion I've ever seen, and we're just getting started.

TBC is my favorite because it’s when I was introduced to twinking in Wrath of Norris on Dragonmaw. I only play this game to play 19 twinks. Legion is my second favorite because of the success I had in founding and building Warlords of Warsong and The Brotherhood of Banners, The 25v25 battles we had, and the other daily events that we ran. Those events were the most fun I’ve had in any game.

MoP for sure. Demo warlock was hot af, no one could play it well other then like 5 ppl. Scuzbaggington used to play then so I was still playing 19s and loving life. Managed to get my GF and my self into SR. Still have those screenshots of the guild invites haha nerd alert. I tried to improve then, something that I no longer care about. I was the most happy and content I've ever been in this game.

tbh you and all the kids from aerie peak(and some had like 5+ years of experience+arena rating hehe) that at least had enough braincells to understand how good blanket silence+improved HoJ (like earl or w/e) were ALL literally str stacking hybrid prots with 400-500 mana eyepatches+ were spec'd into improved armor instead of improved HoJ(a massive LOL here and ill bold it just incase)

2.1k life 1.5 k mana with just self buffs

close to 3k life+1.8k mana with things like kings/arcane intellect/player fortitude/scrolls/draenie crystals(without bullshit buffs like battle shout or that fortitude from icecrown/or any other fortitudes from mobs)

Dont really remember playing much prot, I had a crit stacking ret pala but that's besides the point I guess. The hybrid pala stuff was a bit before your time(lol). It was great for duels and BGs but more people migrated towards str stacking for more burst once more arena organizers migrated to AP(vianco and friends, stephen, etc) around late 2011 early 2012.
