Hello fellow twinkers and WoW players,
Like me, I am sure that many of you are excited for the (re)release of Classic! But I also get asked all the time, why would you play a game that is 15 years old? Aren't you just trying to relive your glory days when Azeroth was still largely unknown? Take off your rose-tinted glasses!
To those people I have but one question, what do YOU enjoy about playing WoW today?
For me, WoW was an incredibly important part of growing up. I learned social interactions with people I didn't know so that I could get invited back to groups, played with many friends that I knew in real life, earned a reputation for being one of the better tanks on my server, and was "that guy" who played boomkin before it was cool. It was the community that I found there that kept me coming back.
But over the years, WoW has morphed from being a game that supported and rewarded social growth and interaction, to a game that in many aspects is now a solo experience. The so-called "quality of life" changes that Blizzard has made has all but destroyed what made the game great for so many people. Retail WoW is NOT the game I fell in love with, and has not been for many years.
I want to preface with this; I WANT retail WoW to succeed. I want it to be bigger and bolder than ever before. But in order for that to happen, changes need to be made regarding the "MMO" and "RPG" aspects of the game. Classic WoW did those two right like no other game before or since.
This is why you should vote with your "feet" and your wallet. When it comes to Classic, you can be the reason Blizzard looks at its current game and makes the changes so many people are clamoring for. If Classic WoW overtakes retail WoW in active players AT ANY POINT, Blizzard will be forced to take a long hard look at why that is.
If any of you are Blizzard fanboys like I have been for so many years, and you love the friends you've made and the communities you have been a part of BECAUSE of Blizzards games, you owe it to yourself to try out Classic. The only way to get changes to the direction retail WoW is taking that a MAJORITY of players seem to want, is to show Blizzard what made its games great in the first place.
This is why the private server scene took off after Cataclysm. Even though I did not support playing on private servers, and still do not, I am grateful for the role they played in giving us a chance to show Blizzard what really matters to the playerbase, community. Private servers won the battle to bring back Classic, but the war over retail WoW is far from over.
Even if you don't like Classic, ask yourself this: What improvements to modern WoW could be made if I support Classic?
Whether you love it or hate it, Classic is coming! And I predict, it will overtake retail WoW in active players at some point. So come show your support, whether you have been a fan since day one, or just wanna see what all the hype is about.
