Why YOU should support Classic

Hello fellow twinkers and WoW players,

Like me, I am sure that many of you are excited for the (re)release of Classic! But I also get asked all the time, why would you play a game that is 15 years old? Aren't you just trying to relive your glory days when Azeroth was still largely unknown? Take off your rose-tinted glasses!

To those people I have but one question, what do YOU enjoy about playing WoW today?

For me, WoW was an incredibly important part of growing up. I learned social interactions with people I didn't know so that I could get invited back to groups, played with many friends that I knew in real life, earned a reputation for being one of the better tanks on my server, and was "that guy" who played boomkin before it was cool. It was the community that I found there that kept me coming back.

But over the years, WoW has morphed from being a game that supported and rewarded social growth and interaction, to a game that in many aspects is now a solo experience. The so-called "quality of life" changes that Blizzard has made has all but destroyed what made the game great for so many people. Retail WoW is NOT the game I fell in love with, and has not been for many years.

I want to preface with this; I WANT retail WoW to succeed. I want it to be bigger and bolder than ever before. But in order for that to happen, changes need to be made regarding the "MMO" and "RPG" aspects of the game. Classic WoW did those two right like no other game before or since.

This is why you should vote with your "feet" and your wallet. When it comes to Classic, you can be the reason Blizzard looks at its current game and makes the changes so many people are clamoring for. If Classic WoW overtakes retail WoW in active players AT ANY POINT, Blizzard will be forced to take a long hard look at why that is.

If any of you are Blizzard fanboys like I have been for so many years, and you love the friends you've made and the communities you have been a part of BECAUSE of Blizzards games, you owe it to yourself to try out Classic. The only way to get changes to the direction retail WoW is taking that a MAJORITY of players seem to want, is to show Blizzard what made its games great in the first place.

This is why the private server scene took off after Cataclysm. Even though I did not support playing on private servers, and still do not, I am grateful for the role they played in giving us a chance to show Blizzard what really matters to the playerbase, community. Private servers won the battle to bring back Classic, but the war over retail WoW is far from over.

Even if you don't like Classic, ask yourself this: What improvements to modern WoW could be made if I support Classic?

Whether you love it or hate it, Classic is coming! And I predict, it will overtake retail WoW in active players at some point. So come show your support, whether you have been a fan since day one, or just wanna see what all the hype is about.

TLDR: The original wow promoted and forced a strong community aspect, current wow plays like a solo game most of the time. Supporting Classic will make the devs consider how to bring that back to retail.

Note: These are the author's thoughts, I'm just summarizing them.

bad for business, ie wont be happening

sry to be the dreambuster

I just want more unique skills back. Having abilities change due to warrior stance has always been nice as it gave a slight tactical side to playing a warrior instead of just charging in and mashing overpower, slam and mortal strike.

Among the many things I'm looking forward to are actually interesting open world encounters with monsters. Right now it doesn't matter what a monster does it's the same, because you still round of 5 or 6 of them up and AOE them down because they don't provide a meaningful anything. Every elite works the same way, you activate some or all of your cooldowns and you kill it. You don't really get to enjoy figuring out how to solve the best way to pick monsters apart ( :

But I do agree with the OP on one thing, being challenged by the world meant sometimes working together, and that created friends and memories! And needing to build your dungeon parties made them feel SOOO much more personal, and yes you wanted to invite that great tank back, rather than just hoping you'll get lucky and have a great tank handed to you for your next 5 dungeons.

I am so confused, what happened?

ie, any changes like that won't be happening, unfortunately bc blizz will rather make a shit game that caters the majority of generation mobile than a good game that caters to the few guys left who still give a fuck

I disagree. As evidenced by the steep decline in active subscriptions and active players from WotLK until now, it actually seems like the MAJORITY of players who enjoyed WoW for what it was now no longer play. Blizzard is in fact catering to the minority with the "QoL" changes it has made. I theorize that if Blizzard reverts a lot of the changes they have made over the years, they will lose players in the short term, but gain FAR more back in the long term, as those who were once subbed begin to come back. Hence why I promote supporting Classic.

To blame this decline of The World Of Warcraft solely on the spam of shitexpansions that Blizztards' been spewing out as of late is too naive. PC gaming as a whole has had been in the decline for almost a decade now.
That being said, I do agree that the current shitexpansions are, well shit. However, I kinda do not see how removing the QoL stuff would attract more players. At this point the ship's sailed for live a long time ago, the only feasible way to fix all the billions of issues ([Item]level bloat, for instance) is probably a complete relaunch.

Also, opening with WotLK Classic servers instead of Vanilla Classics would've been a smarter idea.

I WANT to support Classic but currently I'm on a Fuck Hacktivision break and refuse to give them one penny. If they can prove that they'll leave Blizz the fuck alone (not likely to happen) and Blizz can prove that there's any fucks left to give the Players (honestly not sure there is, besides Token Classic) then I'll be happy to give them money again.

@Selaya
I'm not sure the data is there to show any worrying or significant decline in PC gaming. StarCraft, League of Legends, Fortnite, and Hearthstone, just to name a few account for hundreds of millions of PC gamers. One source I read said Fortnite alone has roughly 85 million players for PC. So PC gaming is not going anywhere.

That being said, I do think the MMORPG genre is in decline and has been for a long time. Reasons for that are unclear. And yes, Blizzard would have to take massive strides in order to restore player confidence. I think that is the largest obstacle they face.

I think Modern WoW and Classic are two different markets for different types of people. Modern WoW is like Justin Bieber to me. We're not same generation with these players. I talked like too old for this shit guy but this is true.

Wotlk had the largest players. This is good for reaching many people as possible but it'd be good if people should have an option to transfer their Classic characters to TBC servers. TBC to Wotlk... Instead of rerolling this'll make things easier for players who want to continue their journey.
