f2p is destined for the alternative twinking section
All this feedback is good, and believe me, we're listening. Whatever ultimately changes, it's going to be determined by a lot of factors, primary among them being the organization of information--
not by anyone's cultural definitions, which by their nature are personal and also changeable over time.
But I quoted this post in particular because danny is closest to what our thinking is right now. From an organizational standpoint, it
seems that the best arrangement is to have one section for traditional 20-29 players, and one for non-traditional 20-29 players. which include both off-subscription accounts as well as starter edition accounts.
If you notice the lack of using the terms P2P and F2P in the last sentence, it is very deliberate.
On the subject of Veterans having their own section, here is the current thinking on this topic among the staff. There are two kinds of questions that a Veteran might ask: the kind that pertain to the ways in which they are like Starter accounts, and the kind that pertain to the facets they gain from subscriber accounts. 95% of questions Veterans could ask are already answered by solutions Starters have come with and posted here, or enchanting questions that Subscribers have already posted there. The last 5% pertain to questions unique to Veterans, such as best ways to farm money quickly for enchants, what the limitations of the guild access are, and things of this nature. I think most people would agree that, over time, there won't be enough new questions coming up of this nature to warrant sustaining an entire sub forum for them.
So the first of the two remaining organizational systems that we are currently considering is to have a traditional and nontraditional 20-29 section, as I stated before, where all the questions that pertain to the whole bracket get asked in the former, and all questions dealing with any non-traditional specific matter get asked in the latter. By default, this is what the community as a whole has already fallen into. And in that respect, the natural habits of you the people speak pretty loudly. Although there are apparently a few people who don't like it that way--hence this thread--that seems to be the natural flow of the community.
The other organizational system is one that many of you may not have considered, unless you've been on the site for more than three years and remember the way it was once organized. But I'm going to throw it out there so you can think about it, objectively and honestly, and determine for yourself how you would feel about it. You see, many years ago, there was no separate "F2P" section. We all posted in the (at the time) 20-24 section, and it worked for us. Because everyone has a different opinion of "purity", and because there are those who would say that no F2P could consider themselves completely pure unless they were playing Ironman Rules as Neon recently suggested, there is a strong argument that any delineation between subscriber, non-subscriber, and starter is arbitrary and only serves to fracture the community. There was never such a sense of "us" vs "them" until we were physically separated, and I think that further separating more "us's" from more "them's" is only going to make it worse. So one proposed solution to that problem is to once again reunite the entire bracket as a
bracket, rather than an account type, and put
everything back into one forum again.
This idea came out of left field for me too, and off the top of my head I don't know which of the staff originally had the idea, but I was around back when there were no divisions in the brackets, as were many of you. Organizationally it would solve a lot of problems for people "on the scale" between full-time Subscriber and completely "pure" Starter. If
all information for one
bracket is in once place, it would make finding the information you need much easier. And, I believe, in time, it would eliminate a lot of the issues we're seeing with territoriality and bias. For example there may be current subscribers who may want to try going veteran for a while, because they need to financially, but wouldn't want to face the stigma of "abandoning their community" or "sleeping with the enemy" when, in fact, let's face it folks, we're all in the same boat here. Having everyone in one section will make it socially acceptable to move from one account type to another as your needs determine, and still be accepted--
as everyone should be--as a member in full standing of the community as defined by the bracket you play in.
So that's where we're at right now. Again we're fully aware that no decision we ultimately make is going to make everyone happy, and we are okay with that and prepared for that. We're listening, but we are also cognizant of the fact that vocal minorities can make a lot of noise and overwhelm the wishes of the quiet majority, so we're not necessarily going to be able to accommodate every single point of view even if it's loudly and tirelessly re-emphasized, therefore there's no reason to be anything but civil, respectful, and open-minded in any discussion that ensues.
In the end, the result will be whatever Shane wants it to be based on what he decides is most important. Please keep that very firmly in mind as you form your thoughts and ideas about this topic.
