Military standards are a joke. The shorter and skinnier you are the better you do; both of these traits suck in combat.
.5xBW press
1xBW Bench
1.5BW Squat
2xBW Deadlift
should be the criteria. Novice can achieve those in under 6 months with proper training and the results are far superior to running 2 miles quickly
For some reason I doubt you have any experience on what "sucks in combat" outside of a video game.
USMC PFT standards are not about strength, it is endurance. You are scored on crunches in 2 minutes( min 50), 3 mile(28 min), pull ups/flex-arm hang. How many of you maggots can run three miles? Let alone in 28 minutes. Or even do 50 push-ups in one sitting? 75?

I KNOW that many recruits can not pass the test when they arrive. And I KNOW that combat troops can pass the test when they leave. I also know that most civilians have nothing to compare combat training to in their daily lives.

And we KNOW you are a stay-at-home dad with too much time on your hands.

We call those "beginner gains"
If you're told to do push ups and run every day, you'll be REALLY good at push ups and running when you retake the test, but not much else.
Again, my argument is the current standards of fitness set by the Army are not indicative of combat readiness based on the fact that strength percolates to all other aspects of fitness whereas endurance does not.
