I also missed the pet nova lately on my 10 mage (and I have the required hit) so must be some changed game mechanic.

nah just get your mace. u can use old crafty or, the sfk lantern, or mystic tome until u get the loom book.

Definitely not, and this is not a rare occurrence either

I am not sure about mages, but for hunters at least, if you enter a battleground with your pet summoned before entering, it doesn't always scale to 24 like it should.

You can see this by looking at your pet's level, if it's only 20 when you enter it didn't scale. This could explain why it sometimes misses, as it is trying to hit people scaled to 24 as a 20.

Resummoning the pet fixes this.

No, you won't retain the stats. It'll turn red (like gear that has lost all it's durability).
