Is backpedaling the best way to maintain range?

About me. Vanilla player that spent periods twinking and also untwinked in sub-max brackets until mid-WotLK (before I did the end game thing). I am really enjoying the return of Classic BGing.

I have lost touch with the sub-max level community so it shouldn’t surprise me if the meta has changed as the newer blood has introduced superior skills and tactics. As a returning veteran, I hope you twinkers can help me with a variety of things that I’ve seen.

Backpedaling

Many hunters try to maintain range by backpedaling. I’ll close the gap while they backpedal waiting for an instant cooldown to fire off at me. Now, back in the day, we’d view backpedaling with derision but since the vast majority of hunters, and twinks in general, employ this range maximize maneuver, I wouldn’t mind reading up about it in a guide.

KBing

An old school player like me was always fixated with the flags. I tend to be very vocal in calling out bad positioning, and non-objective based play. Often, those that feel slighted with my barrage point to how well they are doing on the scoreboard relative to me.

Has it now been accepted by the new community that KB scores are directly related to superior game play and this is the best way to help your team win? Should I alter my pursuit of EFC’s and chase down kills wherever they might be?

Cooldowns

I’ve seen many rogues and paladins blow high minute cooldowns (sprint/evasion, LoH) in non-critical situations (e.g., to chase someone down in a midfield fight absent of flags being around). Does this exert dominance over your opponent that they will do what it takes to own you and screw the flags?

FC’s and Capping

I’ve played thousands of BG’s and RBG’s, many as the FC (which, I no longer care to do). Absent voice comms, when I see my team in decent force in the opposition base and their resource bars are engaged, I view that as a potential opportunity to cap and try to relocate close to the capping position. I’ll move away if the offense seems to be dying off.

FC’s these days like to play the ToT game and many won’t move off of that until they get a “cap” warning (usually, not much advance warning). This often leads to successful repicks.

In one game, I asked the FC (whose name was “FC”) why he doesn’t get off his God damn perch after opponents repicked five times on him. He explained to me that I don’t understand the meta and he was voted Best FC for several years on some obscure site (probably this one) so he knew what he was doing.

Is this really the new meta? Should an FC just wait on his perch and not use his melon to reduce repick opportunities and only move his arse when his team announces in chat to move his arse?

Flakey Roles

We got our DPSers, healers and FC’s. Since I usually FC’d back in the day, I didn’t realize how flakey the modern day FC is. I criticize the perch nesters, and I criticize the guys that will meander through jumps to get to the cap, when a faster, more direct and safe path would have prevented the repick.

Many of these “new vet” FC’s detest my helpful advice. One guy said he was “high AF” (had “Stoned” in his name) and had no idea we returned a flag. Most ask, when the team is upset with all the repicks, “you want me to stand on the cap?”. No, there are other options than extreme measures. Some will get salty and say “you carry the flag next time” and then they proceed to practice jumps. Another FC, “trashform” or something like that, would hold the team hostage by holding onto the flag and not capping to try and force me to AFK out (I have a second account and don’t care when an FC gets triggered and has a temper tantrum).

That’s just my experience. Who do you think are the flakiest type players in a BG?

Summary

Yeah, it’s been awhile since I’ve done low level BGs. I don’t know if players are deploying new, high end strats and evolving the game play or if they’re just dumb AF millennials that don’t have the basic foundational skills down.

It’s been a blast nonetheless.

Depends how long you want to maintain the range for

I guess if you want to sacrifice the autoshot and move slower by backpedaling. Might want to pick up a swing timer (that supports auto shot) mod and y’know, play a hunter appropriately instead of s-keying.

Genuinely can't tell if this thread is a joke. Surely backpedaling is never good? Does backstrafing no longer work (genuine question, as I remember they fixed some tricks in Retail and carried those fixes over)?

This reminds me of the time when people firmly believed zerging the midfield was the best strategy because if all enemies die tHeY cAnT tAkE tHe FlAg, DUH!

Only reason I'd ever have backpedal down is for jumps that require you to backpedal. Oh and for trolling. I often do a 5 second backpedal then cast my hearthstone mid BG

Q: Is backpedaling the best way to maintain range?

A: Backpedaling would adequately maintain the range mirroring another player also backpedaling. Beyond this scope, backpedaling is for complete fucking noobs and should be avoided at all costs. If you have any more questions, please create a new thread.

Absolutely brilliant idea. Someone should write a guide to backpedaling, maybe title it something like "The three S's of the S key" or something.

Considering that the score screen in classic does not include damage done, this is the best way to prove epeen size. Higher numbers mean longer, girthier, bigger peen, you know.

Cooldowns not on cooldown are cooldowns wasted. Taking a point from the PVE community many players have adopted this revolutionary tactic to modern classic 19 pvp. They may even be planning their next use while their multiminute CD ticks down.

Current meta for a lot of these newer players is to sit where people who don't know jumps can't get to them. A lot of these players are fishing for reports, you see. They play a higher game where if they can get someone to post on a forum such as this one in complaint, or have a GM message them about terrain abuse, they earn massive street cred/karma/whatever internet points you choose. Bonus points for screenshots.

Advice in BG chat is spam in the minds of many these days. Helpful advice is treated similarly to cutting off someone epeen. Its viewed as a personal attack on their character, morality, and mentality. No bigger insult is know to most.

theres no reason to backpeddle when you can backstrafe twice the distance in the same period of time(inbetween shot cd). People not playing objectives in wsg is the new pug meta but it doesn't dictate what the actual community considers the objective.
