Gearing a 80 mage?

Is it worth caring about what I wear on an 80 in the 80-89 bracket? I've really just bounced between nostalgic sets such as a full ICC 25H set and my old Herald of the Titans gear set, but lately I've been looking at other opportunities with gear from BC.

This is what I've got so far. Does anyone have any opinions on what I've got? any improvements? am I wasting my time because 89s stomp me regardless? lol

(I know that Veechard loves the full crit set, which is also fun af)

I don't know how much the 4 piece set of Mana-Etched is needed. If you don't already have it, I would also suggest looking at the Spellfire gear set, which boosts SP by 7% of your INT (probably around 45-50 SP boost) and also a scaled Blade of Wizardry.

You don't have to go 89 in this bracket, imo. There are many 80s that are tearing it up just as much if not more than 85s and 89s. Teamwork is still the most important factor in BGs.

I've been trying to save enough for the set and the blade, but it's pretty pricy atm on my realm and I'm poor lol.
What other gear pieces would you use with the spellfire 3set, just other pieces of wrath gear?
 
Yea, I don't think I'd change much of anything else, and would emulate what you have. Depending on how much you value INT and Secondaries, maybe also look at things like Leggings of Calamity from Sunwell, that Ring from Hyjal rep with the proc, and Witching Hourglass from Blackrock Caverns.

I forgot all about Witching Hourglass. Which trinket would you think would be best to pair with it?
Just got the rep for Hyjal too, forgot about that ring too!
 
my 80 twink mage can destroy undergeared 120s in the original BIS gear (ICC25H/RS25h) that is by no means "BIS" in todays age. Doesn't really matter what you run, just know your stat priorities and be good at the game, and its GG
 
Mana etched helm and shoulders and then I’d definately shoot for spellfire, it is so strong it’s weird to ignore. Your first trinket is booty cheeks and I’d suggest replacing it with the trinket from trial of the crusader or whatever the dungeon one is.

Didn't ignore it, I can't afford it :p

Yeah my 1st trinket is still there from old herald runs where mages would do 60k+ on Algalon with ray of frost, still getting used to the changes.

Took your advice and decided to farm the mats myself. I had a lot without even realizing, and bought a few more primals. Saved myself 150k, thank-you :)

For a frost mage I'd probably give Torrent of Elements a try, with Arcane Int it should give you over 80+ SP when it procs. Else maybe Power Torrent, it gives 74 INT at 79, unsure if it's different at 80.

Oh that was you :D GGs.

I'll stick with Torrent of Elements for a while and see how it goes. It's nice that all mage specs are viable in this bracket.
 
Maybe ok for a healer class to take advantage of the Versatility. Pair it with the Hyjal ring perhaps.

I guess it would come down to which you value more, static stats or procs? With my very quick, non-scientific math you end up having roughly the bonus of the set in INT over the 2 rep rings and shattered sun neck (i.e stats are similar to the other rings and necks floating around, but the set bonus is ok) However, the procs on those rep rings and neck shouldn't be ignored as they provide significant increases to INT and SP.

Imo, this bracket seems heavily skewed towards procs.
