10.0 Predictions/Discussion

With the announcement of Diablo Immortal being available on PC in addition to the expansion being a year out, things are gonna change for sure
I lost complete interest in that game when they announced that you'd be able to change classes at max level. Just... trash. 100% trash. Absolute garbage decision that made me deeply concerned for the Diablo franchise.

Yea, I've never been a huge fan of the Diablo franchise, though I do enjoy Path of Exile. I'll probably check Immortal out and play it for a while

you can't hang

twinkinfo tradition of mods can't hang in wsg

as if you are known for sticking around to help your team...

I'm pretty sure I was in that ab for a brief moment on my Alli hunter until it was obvious horde could 5 cap

I just heard about a different WoW server, that IMO looks far, far more interesting: https://epsilonwow.net/

Meanwhile... back at Blizz HQ, they're releasing Lizard Faeries & taking the most basic of features from competitor's games that they'd have coded circles around 10 years ago.
Yeah, stuff like that, Revelations and Project Ascension definitely show how much more passionate the WoW community are about WoW than the actual WoW developers.

Back to predictions - after thinking about it some more, there are definitely going to be some classes that get the short end of the stick with the new talent trees.

I'm not even talking about the classes / specs with massive ability advantages like Hunters.

Right now, assuming the 6 class points and 5 spec points assumption is accurate, 7-9 abilities (accounting for potential forced passive choices) + pvp talent is roughly where most classes are now.

But since the more valuable abilities are going to be further down the talent tree (based on the early Druid trees, let's say row 4), there are going to be classes that **need** two distantly separated abilities to maintain their level of viability right now.

For most classes / specs, this will just be a part of your build decision-making and will be a positive change. But the chances of two critical choices being too far down separate branches of the tree seem high.

Consider Assassination Rogue, as a hypothetical. What if Kidney Punch takes 5 points to obtain on a side of the tree completely separate from Kick or Shadowstep. It's a niche example, but this type of thing is bound to happen and it will be anxiety inducing for players who main those classes.

That is my prediction.

P.S., I also predict Rogues will get Vanish in their class trees at an accessible place for level 20s to obtain - and Sub Rogue will access Shadow Dance from their spec tree. It likely won't all be bad news for classes forced to make choices that somewhat nerf them relative to now.

Gotta admit, it looks more interesting than Ascension by a long shot.

lvling on acsension is super fun but I found the end game to be really meh.

Yep, you’d think that playing as a jedi from old starwars mmo would be cool.

But as a pixar supervillain once said, “if everyone is super, no one would be”.

With the announcement of Diablo Immortal being available on PC

wtf is that about?? I thought the whole big deal was that it was a mobile platform....

Only goes to show that the only predictions you can make for any content is that it'll be ass-backwards to good sense.

I've been toying with this idea and not gunna lie, I'm getting anxious just thinking about it. could possibly make some specs completely unplayable other than a specific way. ALTHOUGH, with the way they are talking about the talent trees I would be slightly shocked if thats the case.

The ability to change classes at max level seems like Blizzard just avoiding all the class tuning burden.

now whenever the next fotm emerges, 80% of the player base is free to swap to it, instead of complaining in the forums or leveling an alt…

better hope that shit doesn’t make it to wow

Figure out how to make 10 buttons, two analog sticks and a digital 4-way crossbar into a serviceable interface? Yes please! I'm that masochist. Off the top of my head:

Left stick for movement, right stick for camera, left and right upper triggers for tab targeting, lower left trigger for the new empower spell mechanic, lower right trigger as a modifier button, and the other 8 buttons (4 buttons + 4-way directional pad) provide 16 options for various spells and abilities. Masochistic players will map the lower left trigger to a second modifier, to bring the number of available abilities to 32 instead of using what inevitably will be something like an instant 8-way on-screen menu when hitting a button.

And since we're on a fast path to crazy town, consider this: once Blizzard develops a halfway decent controller scheme, they resolve the major non-technical hurdle standing in the way of bringing WoW to VR.

That's similar to how I had my controller set up. Years ago I had a goof and hurt my wrist, so I learned to play WoW using the ConsolePort addon. It basically just let you run the game with a controller. The options were robust enough that I was raiding and doing Mythic+ on my shaman and feral. I had it set up so that the triggers acted as Shift and CTRL. Face buttons were spells.

Not my actual bindings, but as an example:
X = Frost Shock
X + Shift = Flame Shock
X + CTRL = Lightning Bolt
X + Shift + CTRL = Lava Burst

This gave me 16 keybindings for spells with just the face buttons, bumpers were still free so i could use them to tab-target, D-Pad plus modifiers were bound to mounts, a radial selection wheel, form changing, buffs, etc. You can make one of the bumpers an ALT modifier for even more combinations.

Point being, as far as abilities are concerned, WoW works on a controller without needing to prune. I think they'd just need to have some kind of bind-able radial selection wheel for mounts, toys, hearths, food, buffs, professions, etc.

The devs have spent 3 expansions now, toying with scaling and making toolkits increasingly bigger at decreasingly lower levels.

Even with the 'what's gonna be in what talent-trees'-discussion, I don't get why people are being afraid of having our toolkits taken away.
We've literally only been given more playing-field for the past 6 years, even bringing players at lower levels into the yearly content-cycle.
To bring us further away from these things after all these years, would be to tear down their long-term plans for the game as a whole. We are moving into a new era of WoW. Why would they cancel all the preparations they've made to make this era happen?

I'd like to know where takes like these come from! Other than the small comparisons made in a couple of interviews with Ion and Holinka.

The sample talent trees make me think we will end up with more spells early in the spec trees as many of the latter choices are either naturally high level spells and talents or borrowed powers from old expansions. Obviously we won't have mechanics that were tied to max level borrowed powers from past expansions because they were made to work with already existing spells. The only thing that might be missing is an interrupt.

This is what I've been taking from it aswell. Wich is why I'm confused with all the talks of having our toolkit stripped

I think it comes from people reading about them putting "class utility" in the class tree and "throughput" in the spec tree and reading quotes about how they want you to make choices and "oh god Im going to have to choose between hamstring and pummel!"

Which, honestly, fair. We dont know what the "Freebie" points are going to look like. At all. We can make some educated guesses, but we simply don't know. And we dont know where on the tree certainly utility and damage abilities will be. Again, we can make an educated guess, but we dont know.

Is blizzard satisfied with the leveling/ability progression we currently have and will they try to emulate it as much as possible? Or do they think lower level characters desperately need more/less abilities. No idea. Will they look at oddball shit like prot warriors not getting thunderclap till 19 while other tanks specs get their AOE by like... 12? Or do they even care?

So I do think it's safe to say something like "our kits will look more like BFA than SL" because I think that's a real possibility. I doubt, for instance, that an arms warrior is going to get to have both ignore pain and shield block. I'd be stoked, but I bet shield block goes back to being prot specific. Or at least I'd have to sacrifice like... pummel to get it.

I don't think we're looking at classic 19s toolkits. But I wouldn't be shocked at all (and am fully expecting) a little bit of pruning compared to what we currently have.
