I have had this done, and basically what happens is they lock your characters above level 70, and prevent you from traveling to Northrend. I kept all of my items, skills. etc. (including 450 profs and BoA items)

Sounds to me like you just need to find a reasonable teammate. Tell us some info about yourself, and we can see if we can hook you up with some intelligent players. In the meantime, focus not on winning or gear, but improving your play skills each match.
