Hunter's Pets and Leveling XP Management Mini Guide

So lots of people have been getting confused mostly due to misconception that you can level your pets to 19 by farming mobs 6 levels under your current level and not get XP But still manage to get XP for your pet. This is incorrect, If you already know this then you still might be unsure on how exactly to tame the 3 ''Main'' Pets (Boar/Serpent/Cat/) and level to minimum of x2 Level 19 and 1 18 (3 lv 19 pets is also possible ! ) and still get Rank 3 Bite and Claw.

Things to note:

- Pets require 25% of the experience that a player would at the same level!
- Your Pets DO NOT get XP from Quest Turn in's and Rested XP is not accounted for Quest turn ins.
- ^ Second part of this note is important because if you stack to much rested XP in the later levels 17-19 you will gain extra unnecessary XP while leveling your pet.

So knowing this, you will mostly want to hold off on turning in quests while your already close to leveling and your pet. So basically make sure your pets are all the same level by mob grinding before turning in quest's.

The Taming Process:

3 Pets we will be looking at is,
The Rake
Deviate Stinglash
Great Goretusk

Step 1 - At level 10, you want to tame The Rake right away! This will be your only Pet up until Level 16. During this you want to knock out all your BoP's / Needed Quests. So DM Chest,WC Runs,if Horde Trailblazer Boots quests (can be done at 15).

Step 2 - You and The Rake should both be 16, now before you go to Redridge to grab your boar you will want to go out and Tame either a Lv 16 ''Deepmoss Creeper'' or ''Bloodsnout Worg'' this is the lowest lv pet you can tame to learn Bite Rank 3. Tame it, kill a few mobs with the Creeper or Worg using Bite until it says your Learned the ability. Abandon pet then proceed to Redridge for your Great Goretusk. Now level to 17, you can do this via quests since both pets are already 16.

Step 3 - Now after hitting 17, you want to get both your Cat and Boar to 17. Then move onto taming a Pet for Rank 3 Claw, a ''Shore Crawler'' is best for this option as it's easy to access for Alliance and much more easier to get to for Horde then a ''Black Bear Patriarch'' in Loch Modan.
(Note: Black Bears range from 16-17 so an Alliance Hunter can easily knock out both Bite/Claw Rank 3 at level 16)

Step 4 - Now after finally getting both your max rank ability's, it's time to head out to wailing caverns and tame yourself your serpent, a Lv 17 Deviate Stinglash.
These are usually more deeper into the instance, they can be a little tricky to tame and might take a few trys. Keep your Aspect of Monkey up try and hit a concuss and start taming it from max range.

Step 5 - Now your 17 with all 3 Pets, I personally suggest aiming to level serpent and boar to 19 and keeping the rake at 18.

Level yourself to 18 and all your pets to 18. Now At this point you will want to do some needed quests For Alliance ''The Night Watch'' for your Quiver, for Horde SFK Ring and Screecher Belt (Kinda Optional). To minimize XP gain, while doing Quiver or Belt quest you can be in Ghost mode while following around a Higher level killing the mobs for you so you only get XP for quest turn ins.

For SFK You can stand outside the instance/have a 60 clear the instance up until the last boss before you enter to minimize XP gain.

Quiver Quest = 6k~ XP for Alliance Hunter
SFK Ring Quest = 3.3K XP and Screecher Belt = 4.2k XP so 7.5k XP for Horde Hunter.

1 Lv 17 Pet = 4425 XP till 18. Yourself at 18 = 19400 XP needed to 19.
4425 x 3 = 13275. 13275 - 19400 = 6125 XP

So considering you leveled all 3 Pets from 17 to 18. You should have at least 6k~ XP to spare to do the required quests above and not get too much unnecessary padded XP at 19. For a Horde Hunt doing Screechers along with the required SFK Ring it will put you about 1k into 19.

Now you can freely mob grind to get either all 3 Pets to 19 or just 2. 1 Pet = 4850 XP Required.
4850 X 3 = 14550. 14550 - 21300(XP Required to 20) = 6750 XP Left Over.

If you do just 2 Pets you should have about 11k~ XP Left over.

That's pretty much it / clarify's everything about Hunter Pets at 19 I hope, if you notice anything I left out let me know. Wrote this fairly quick meant to be a ''Mini Guide'' but turned out to be a bit bigger maybe. Wanted it mainly just to be straight forward and easy to understand for all.

Edit: Will touch this up later / grammar check etc for grammar nazis.

Your a legend thanks for the guild! Now can't you just tame a level 19 Serpent in WC nd problem solved? Also does the Rake do more dmg than other cats in 1.12?
Can't tame pets inside dungeons, only outside. The Rake is fastest attack speed 1.2 in classic so yes. or at least most pushback vs casters

Bump. Will read when I get home. Ty

According to petopia, there's cats with 1.3 attack speed so if you already happened to "miss" optimal for the rake there should be sufficient options without too much heartbreak... like the moonstalker matriarch in darkshore, 19-20 cat:

https://www.wow-petopia.com/classic/look.php?id=tigerskindark

Yes?

edit- and any reason you cant substitute a level 19 thunderhawk hatchling? Is it loyalty or something?

https://www.wow-petopia.com/classic/look.php?id=windserpentskin

Believe their is another cat slightly lower that you can get also with 1.3 Attack Speed, And regards to thunderhawk Yeah you could elite pets are no stronger after tamed. But you'd still be pushing 25% XP ( x5 Loyalty Levels of 5% XP Gain Required ), so it's better to knock that off during leveling process I'd guess. + Green serpent looks the best :D.

Though there is times where you Pet can gain loyalty just been sitting in town and on the next single kill your loyalty can go up. This is explained better here https://www.engadget.com/2007/08/06/the-hidden-formula-behind-pet-loyalty/?guccounter=1

''Basically, using a newly tamed pet, a stopwatch, and a notepad, she determined that in order for a pet to go from loyalty level 1 (Rebellious) to level 2 (Unruly), the pet needs to gain 5% of the experience the Hunter needs for his next level. So a level 11 hunter needs 8800 experience to get to 12, which means a pet (of any level and family) needs to kill for 440 XP (5% of 8800) to go up a loyalty level with that Hunter.''

Also Both Thunderhawk/Stinglash are both within reach of each other I wouldn't see why someone wouldn't just want to pick it up ASAP.

What is your opinion on Takk? I heard he is good for his high top end and move speed, but given that I plan to get both rake and boar, should my 3rd slot be filled by wind serpent or takk? I also heard wind serpent has highest raw dps, but that Takk has burst cause of his top end. Which would you take?

If you were to substitute a Pet for Takk I'd say The Rake. Serpent is ideal cause the magic dmg and range attack.

Used this guide for my hunter and it was super helpful. Just dinged 19 with 3 lvl18 pets and gonna lvl serpent and boar to 19. Couple tips not mentioned I found helpful.

When you tame wc serpent get hp buff or get thunderhawk. If you tame wc serpent it doesn't have lighting bolt, gotta tame thunderhawk at 18. What I did was lvl rake to 17, tame bear in Loch Modan for claw, tame worg in silver pine for bite, tame wc serpent, lvl to 18, tame thunderhawk for lightning, tame lvl17 great gortusk, lvl all pets to 18.

Aye glad it could help, but weird you tamed a Serpent from OUTSIDE wailing caverns instance entrance and it didn't have Lighting Breath o_O ?

  • Deviate Coiler (15-16 Elite, The Wailing Caverns, Lightning Breath 2)
  • Deviate Stinglash (16-17 Elite, The Wailing Caverns, Lightning Breath 2) ''

Yea I thought it was weird too but I read comments on wowhead of people having the same issue and wowhead doesn't show them as having it. I ended getting it so no big deal though.

Yeah idk haven't heard anyone with this issue. Weird af though

Isn't there a wolf out of SFK that is identical to The Rake? 1.2 attack speed. Wouldn't Boar, Wind Serpent, and SFK wolf be a BIS trio as well? Thanks for the write up.

even though slavering worg also has 1.2 attack speed it has inferior stats to the rake

furious howl is nice but overall cats still do more dps than wolves

Hunters at 29 get their boar from inside RFK since they are already 28. Have you confirmed in-game you can't do it in Wailing Caverns?

Do you mind clarifying why these three pets are the best? What are their abilities that make these the pets to choose? If I recall the boar has a charge ability.

If my memory is still intact, aren't the spiders pretty good for the net ability?

Nah that's in TBC.

1. Boar = Charge.
2. The Rake 1.12 AttackSpeed Fastest at 19's good for push back on casters ie priest's.
3. Wind Serpent, Range attack + Magic Damage, good vs classes like paladin/shaman/warriors/druids.
