World of Warcraft in Unreal Engine 4 Discussion

What are your thoughts on this? Should blizzard do something like this in the future? I like the idea but i know many people play on a potato and won't be able to run it lol

While we all jest about how WoW can be played on a potato, it actually has fairly common system requirements for Video Games today and runs like complete garbage on older systems. That said, this will never happen due to the Engine WoW is built with. They can't even change the Backpack because of how outdated the Engine is.

Further from that, the USA, among a few other Countries, doesn't have the Internet backbone to run MMO's with exceptionally high Graphics. All one has to do is look to BDO to see that. ESO is another good example. That Game COULD look even better than Skyrm 4K (modded) but everyone's FPS would drop to shit. We're just not there yet with the Internet to have MMO's that look like high end Single Player Games on Gaming Rigs.

your really smart bro

Just want to throw out there that Blizzard have said they will never change the graphics of the game or make it more realistic as it’s the cartoony nature of it that makes it what it is. Vanilla / TBC is a good example. The game was in its prime and trumped any mmorpg for concurrent player base with a more realistic feel.

To this day cartoony games > realistic. Look at Fortnite and PUBG.

Was in reference to the fact that the starter backpack cannot be swapped with another backpack like every other bag slot in the game. Adding the additional 4 rows was a workaround.

There are certain aspects of the game where the code is so buried over the years that trying to change things would be incredibly difficult with all the subsequent errors and bugs that would follow. I'm a firm believe that the initial bag is like a load barring wall and removing or changing that will delete the entirety of kalimdor and potentially shattrath.

I'll take quality content and fun gameplay over fancy graphics anyday.

Definitely agree. The current graphics don’t really bother me. It would just be nice if everything was up to Legion and BfA standards. Also I really like WoW’s cartoonish style myself.

I just wish they would let us bring back old char models like before. The new ones look goofy and ugly imo. Worst change they ever made

I'd love to be educated as to precisely how "National Network Infrastructure" is crippling the "3D-Rendering Capabilities" of our video-cards...

...please continue.
Ah, so the USA's Internet is so good in your mind that it should have zero issue playing the upcoming "Witcher 3 MMO" on Ultra? Ok I'll admit there is no such thing as the Witcher 3 MMO but my point is valid. Playing WoW on Ultra with 100 FPS in Merica doesn't remotely mean we have a fantastic Internet backbone here. My example of BDO is the perfect point. It doesn't have the FPS problems in Korea like it does here and in most of the "Western World". Granted South Korea tends to rank #1 on the Planet for Internet speed while the USA often doesn't even get into the top 10.

Still, I'll bite, show me an MMO that compares in graphics to any high end Single Player Game (The Witcher 3, Kingdom Come Deliverance, Tomb Raider, etc) that would play on ultra in the USA, UK, France, etc, at ~100 FPS on a high end Gaming Rig...

Ummmmmmm......

But yes I’d love better graphics. I’d be happy if everything just looked like BfA zones though..
What @tence said. Blizzard has repeatedly said they cannot REPLACE the tired old Backpack due to the Game's Engine. Adding 4 slots, while a tiny QoL addition, is laughable.

Forgive my incompetence... but there appears to be something wrong with my browser.

I can't get it to display the post where someone insisted that America had "fantastic internet"... nor the post where you graciously explained the mechanism by which increasing internet speed improved the fidelity of graphical renderings.

No doubt their disappearance is due to some carelessness on my part (...or maybe it was that darn "backbone"), but regardless... I sure do appreciate how you took the time to share your technical expertise with us less-informed folk. :)

Still, I'll bite, show me an MMO with graphics, including Volumetric Lighting and advanced dynamic Shadows, even of the quality of The Witcher 3 (a 2015 Game) that would play on ultra in the USA, UK, France, etc, at ~100 FPS on a high end Gaming Rig...
Fortunately, that's no longer necessary... now that you've enlightened me, I understand how solving my struggles with "volumetric" lighting and "advanced" dynamic shadows doesn't require my upgrading to a "high end gaming rig". I can just carry my current rig to Korea! This is gonna' be the best summer ever!

Thanks again! :D

I mean it looks nice and all, but it would probably fry a good number of PCs that we got. Plus imagine bgs like ashran where you get 80 people firing off starfalls and spells at the same time, unless you use a supercomputer i think its not gonna run ok.

You know what i want though? I want nights as dark as the one shown here.

It won't ever happen.

It's more likely they'd make a WoW 2 with a better engine eventually than that.

And that's really unlikely.

I don't know anything about this kinda thing. But didn't Blizz already say they wouldn't switch to it because of server issues or something? Or costing to much.. I don't remember.

@Sin'dor @Faerondil man you guys are super smart and we should all bow to your supreme intelligence. Please enlighten all of us nublings as to why exactly not one single MMO as of July 2019 has ever had the graphic fidelity of ANY of the high end Single Player Games of their time period, or even several years prior. All of those Studios certainly had the technology & talent to create such an MMO with damn near photo realistic graphics but alas, none have to this point, so weird. It's almost like there's something keeping them from doing so, a bottleneck if you will. That pesky little problem certainly isn't from our ends, Gaming PC's today are capable of running even the highest quality Single Player Games on the highest settings in every resolution save 4K-100+ FPS-120 hz, were even the Pascal Titan struggles.

For the sake of argument we'll even accept responses based off of 1080P-100+ FPS-75 hz. Even average PC's can handle those specs, so why haven't any MMO's been created with the graphic fidelity of Games like The Witcher 3 (4 yrs ago) or Tomb Raider (2.5 yrs ago) or Kingdom Come Deliverance (1.5 yrs ago). There must be some reason, we'd all love to learn from you very stable geniuses.

The government is holding back gaming! #stormarea51

unreal engine is the reason so many FPS games are hacked, file swapped, instant player max level creation, exploited, etc. with ease due to access on PC computers. the similar created variant like that blizzard uses for overwatch has lead to problems. unreal engine and off shoot variations is old and too well known.

many shooter/looter like for example: the borderlands series games and earlier MMORG games like used/use are unreal engine. within a short time of weeks/months players are moving or altering files, swapping, player duping (to item dupe), then comes various editor programs to alter player data, add gold keys, use codes to give weapons, etc.

blizzard in creating WOW, made sure this did not happen on a grand scale, because the data, your characters are on their servers.
