Why are we at war?

Why is the U.S. at war in the Middle East?

Personally I see the US as a giant defense contractor, with the largest military in the world.

The US is far from being the most populous. That crown would go to China then South Korea. US and India are pretty close to tied.
The US is has higher defense budget. Of that, there is no doubt.

I gave you a chance.
Time for you to sit down grasshopper.
You should stick to philosophy.
Bye...

America's spending on anything can not be compared to any other country. We are quite unique. Thus we incomparable.
Just think, if it was not for HUGE defense budget. We would not be having this nice conversation today. Because, we all know the US government invented the Internet for defense.
Nor, would we have have the aviation industry that we have today. Nor would we have Life Flight... Etc...
This is an unsubstantiated hypothesis. There is no indication that if the us defense budget was say 50% of it's historic actuality that the internet would have somehow failed to come into existence.

The aviation industry at least has a potential economic argument, but ultimately you have no way of demonstrating how the aviation industry would have developed with less military contracts except that it would somehow be different.

It's like saying if Edison never existed we would still be using candles.

Now imagine what those many trillions of dollars could have been spent on. i bet you could fit free college education in and have a nice sum left over. Now factor in the potential contribution of such an influx over time.

Well, of course you can't because there's no way of accurately charting hypotheticals like this.

So you are saying that the Middle East was at war millennia ago because of Economist? How about 500 years ago? 250? 125?
There are only a few things that have stayed constant in the Middle East. And one of them has been that it has been in a constant state of conflict. And that was long before the New World was even discovered. Even longer before America declared independence from England & King George III and was founded on it's banner of "Life, Liberty and Persuit of Happiness".
One of those constants was mentioned on the very first page in this thread. And there is very little you or I, or anyone for that matter, can every do about that one. For as soon we despose of one, another will come along to fill the void. History has told us this.
Or history has shown that partitioning the Ottoman Empire into a bunch of invented countries was asking for trouble. it can be argued that these crude divisions were directly responsible for this "never-ending conflict".

We would, of no doubt, have less pilots. As the overwhelmingly largest portion of commercial pilots are ex-military.

And of coarse, the US is responsible for that?
Ultimately, if they had never sided with Germany in WWI, it may still be intact. In every conflict there are losers and there are winners. They chose the incorrect side. And it cost them dearly.

The first time I thought it was just a spellcheck error, but now I am questioning if you really know how to spell "of course"

Didn't your Mommy teach you manners? It is rude to correct someone.

Have to blame that one on iPhone. On what do you blame your lack punctuation? Kek...
Rules are, if you are going to correct someone make sure your correct yourself.

Probably should try to stick to topic. The OP did ask rather nicely.

i didn't actually assign blame or causality. I was refuting this statement:

but if we were to look at causality it seems that the inherent regional instability and the rise of radicalized regimes is costing the US and Europe dearly.

These threads are sorta fun, but let's keep it mature here. No racism or religion wars please. Pure speculation.

This is my take on it.

He kind of hit it on the head with the Africa analogy. Too bad the US got feed the mystery meat called WMD's.

Some may say the US has no need of ME oil because our production is #1 , but the man behind the curtain is oil reserves, not production.

Wonder how those solar powered tanks will perform?

I was referring to it costing the Ottoman Empire dearly. And it did... They are no longer around and neither is the German Empire(Prussian). Both, as a result of WW1.

The US is still around as is Great Britain, France, Russia and many of the other Allied Powers . As for Europe, it is a continent, not a nation. It has been, and will continue to be, here for quite some time no matter what the nation's within it's borders do.

But we still stray off topic... I shall answer no more replies unless they concerning the original topic at hand.
Have a nice afternoon everyone.

XD
Space stations aren't attempting to communicate with aliens... They are trying to recontact other space lizards

But my mom said the lizard men were nice.

That's all good, but it has little to do with what I said.
