The "Things I wish I knew when I started" Thread for F2Ps & Vets!

For all the newbies lurking these forums, what quick tips or headache-saving pieces of advice would you give? What have you learned since you started as a F2P/Vet, that would have made your life a lot easier (or your journey a lot more enjoyable) had you known it from the get-go?

Not necessarily a full guide or Q&A, but just little experiences or lessons you've learned along the way.

I'll go first:

1.) When you're gearing up and have game time, the best thing you can be doing is giving yourself gearing options for when your sub expires and you start queuing BGs. I've repeatedly made the mistake of theorycrafting the singular BiS gear set to go after, then sub runs out, I get in some BGs and think to myself, "Man, I really wish I had a bit more Vers."...or, "Gee, this trinket isn't as good as I thought it'd be"....or, "I really should have gotten that other helm".....I.E. No amount of theorycrafting can compare to actual subjective experience playing in the bracket, so get as many different gear, enchant, gem, etc. options as you possibly can while you have game time, so when it expires you have plenty of wiggle room to experiment and try out different things.

2.) The enjoyment for lots of us isn't strictly about the PvP. Yes, the PvP is the primary reason many of us made twinks in the first place, but there's a lot of enjoyment to be had by playing the game in the shoes of a Level 20 and trying to get as much accomplished on the PvE side as you can. Especially for F2Ps, the challenge of completing content and getting cool gear and checking off little personal achievements can be very rewarding and fun. The pacing is completely different than modern, end-game retail WoW that many of us are used to, and it can really be a fresh of breath air or a new way to experience the game.

3.) Finding a guild/group of friends to run with is 90% of the fun. There was a period that I tried making my twinks on Stormrage, because it's the most populated Alliance US server with a hot AH and I figured it'd make gearing and buying supplies that much easier...I quickly realized that without people online in /g, without people to queue with every now and then, it just wasn't nearly as enjoyable. So if you're new, step #1 should be finding a cool group of people to roll with!

As a vet with gametime, prioritize i28s over everything else. Keep gems and scrolls in your bags as you can get literally everything else except for i28s without gametime.

EDIT: You can get cloaks and rings in Drustvar and Nazmir at 20, but every other slot you'll need to buy or farm on a level 24/5.

I would say atleast get tons of gems/Enchants in reserve. There's definately some wacky combos that you might enjoy for doing PvE things. Let's say go fullon haste build. that is one thing i really enjoy atleast.

Also if your Veteran. maybe get yourself setup with fishing and stuff so you got something to do while queuing if that is catching Old Ironjaw or whatever it might be.

Rob the AH for Transmog pieces. that's definately something i'll do. some is a complete and utter pain trying to get afterwards. This is definately a big thing for my. SWAG = 10% dps/Healing/Tankiness increase.

You can also do like me and have seperate accounts. Then you can continue farming your transmog pieces on another acc while waiting for queues and whatnot :D

Agreed. Spent so so so many hours farming TBC socket pieces because (again, theorycrafting) on paper they give more stats...and now find myself using i28s more anyway lol because of the amazing stat flexibility. Not necessarily about having the MOST stats, but about having the RIGHT stats, I've found.

I still stand behind the idea that you should do both so you have options, but you're right that dungeon grinds can be done without game time so prioritizing i28s when you're on the clock makes a lot of sense.

Expect nerfs for stand out stuff and plan in advance.
Make backups in time for GF relics, talasite gems, bramble king staff etc.

Also, gear set for offspec so you can mix it up a little when you get bored.

That's such a grind IMO that I got it done first. As a vet I can farm the BoE with a 24 on the main account while playing the unsubbed 20 and still have the known RNG out of the way... trying to farm the exact BoE I want seemed like a bad idea (YMMV) that would leave me with a half-geared twink running TBC a thousand times with no trade option when unsubbed.

I can always resub down the road (or free day/weekend) and transfer the BoA, but not getting the BoA or TBC done before time is up puts you in a prickly mediocre spot. Of course I spread toons across accounts so It's not a big deal to resub one.

And honestly, like you said in the OP, you're not always going to know exactly what you want until you actually unsub.

edit- also, I've had less than stellar luck on the BoE drops and my AH have had dick-all. That's a factor too.

Also got a warrior semi-decently TBC geared in 6 hours played... but that was because i was able to trade drops.

One thing I just though of today that I wish I'd though of before my sub expired: GLYPHS! Fun extra bit of flavor you can add to your toon, and they're usually quite cheap on the AH!

You don't need 75 engi to purchase the cogwheels for the dragonling trinket. It can be done and traded by someone else.
What a waste of time and money the first time around.

You don't need Eng at all to equip and use it.

I just resubbed and am looking to strictly focus on having one character (level 24 or 25?) to farm ilvl 28 gear and then the character I’m going to main...

That’s really all you need to focus on that’s unobtainable once your game time expires and you’re pretty much set, right?

So, I’m [somewhat] lazy... not an insane min-maxer like some, so I’m not going to 100% twink out the char that’s going to farm for my main 20... I’m thinking either Arcane Mage or BM Monk for the farmer... thoughts?

Also, why do people always say 24 or 25? Easier mobs vs. extra talent point? I feel like there should be a relatively definitive best way of going about it, lol. Which is it?!

Yeah, pretty much the only difference between a pinned f2p's gear and a pinned vet's gear is ilvl 28 BoEs (rings and cloak aside.)

I also encourage you to at least stock up on mats, scrolls, and gems before your gametime drops as simply buying shit off the AH is infinitely easier and requires infinitely less time and effort to obtain it all yourself when you don't have gametime.

Arc mage and BM monk are both solid picks. You might be more likely to end up in the pulling role as a monk whereas an arc mage may be more likely to fill the meat grinder role.

Idk about 24/25, I would imagine it's just because 24 is easier to get to than 25? xD It really doesn't matter. In my case (I farm level 6 BoEs) I could have made my farmer a level 13, 14, or 15 (pretty sure,) and I only landed on 14 because I didn't realize until later on that 13s could loot the same pieces. The rest of my clients have level 13 farmers lol.

As long as you have a toon that's a right level, and you have a finger to loot the mobs with, I don't think it matters all that much.
