EU+US RSham Questions

Henry

Veteran
Been learning rsham for a few weeks now, and I have some gameplay questions for more tenured vets.

1. When should I use Chain Heal over Healing Surge? It has a longer cast time, costs more mana, and heals for less...at what point does it make sense to prioritize it?

2. Should I be filling with Lightning Bolt? Or Lava Burst with Flame Shock applied? Lightning Bolt does more damage and doesn’t cost any mana, but Lava is a guaranteed crit if Flame Shock is on the target. At a certain Crit %, does prioritizing Lightning Bolt make sense?

3. Any helpful addons for more easily tracking Flame Shock and Riptide? Being able to see on the nameplates (both allied in the raid panel, and enemy nameplates), for instance, which targets they’re applied to and how long the duration is left?

4. Any other pro tips or tricks that I maybe hadn’t considered?

Thanks!

1. The cleave heal is nice in some very limited scenarios but it should probably never be a priority. I've seen some of the better shaman players in the bracket use it, but I have enough fingers to count the times and still hold a beer. Healing surge + unleash life is a quicker combo to get heals onto two people.

2. Fill with totems, sheers and flame shocking stealthies. Outside of just absolute pug stomping, I cant think of a time where your damage is more useful than kicking heals and dropping a slow totem. You can keep shocks up on 2-3 targets at a time, too which can prevent re-stealths and help you set up burst combos.

3. I just use ELVUI but there are plenty of add ons that'll let you put debuffs on nameplates if you arent looking to completely change your whole UI. One thing I appreciate about ELVUI is itll let me place small little HOT indicators on my raid frames so I dont have a bunch of icons littering my nameplates on my screen. So I can run debuffs on enemy nameplates, with buffs on friendly raid frames. ymmv obviously.

4. Heal me more, Ohti less. More maximum pewpew.

Good tips, thank you! Hadn’t occurred to me to focus on stealthies for my flame shocks...makes sense.

I tried ELVUI once upon a time and it was such a pain in the ass re-configuring my entire UI that I gave up on it lol but maybe I’ll give it another shot.

Regarding Earthbound Totem: I have been only using it situationally to date. Like on a fleeing enemy, or in a choke point to slow down enemy advances. Should I be using it pretty much on CD and just dropping it by the healers?

Prioritizing kicking enemy heals is good, and I’d been doing that already, but one thing I’ve noticed is that Wind Shear has a lower range than most of my other spells. So more frequently than not I’ll be out of range..need to work on my positioning I suppose, and spend less time worrying about topping damage leaderboards with lots of big Lightning Bolts and Lava Blasts, and more time worrying about being in range to kick a critical heal?

Its a pain in the ass if you dont want to reconfigure literally everything. I think other people WeakAuras?

This is good use but also just dropping it in the middle of the fight works too. One of the most frustrating things in the world to me, as a melee player, is trying to stick on the enemy players and having to turn around and kill an earhtbind totem instead.

If you cant kick a heal, kicking a mages arcane missiles is better than having to spam heal their target. And it can leave them stranded. Or kick a warlocks fear. But yea, less worry about topping damage. You're a healer with the most expansive support kit in the bracket. Windsheer and totems are what make your class.

1. Chain gets used conditionally and is typically lower priority. Whenever a) it won't be over-healing multiple targets unnecessarily b) when you won't be exposing yourself to interrupts c) when mana conservation isn't a concern. Most situations it's more about casting speed and keeping the necessary people alive, so chain is for triage healing less focused damage.
2. if you're in a situation where your healing spells or utility spells (earthbind, wind shear) aren't needed or on cooldown, flame shock on cooldown especially when moving, lava burst if needed and being stationary won't expose you unnecessarily, bolt if everything else is on cooldown.
3. Plenty of addons which show spell icons with timers for both your spells as well as your enemies abilities and spells. I currently use one called Plater which gives you a ton of customization options. It takes some work to set up but it is definitely helpful once you have it dialed in.
4. Line of sight. Learn how to hump pillars like a pro. Our enemies can't hit what they can't see. If you can't find cover, at least stay at a range that makes it more difficult for enemies to target you. Staying alive is a priority and if you can do this while forcing an enemy to poorly position themselves you'll have an advantage. Ghost wolf gets used a lot and gives you a good mobility advantage vs most classes.

Mouseover macros are a must for any healer. I also use an [@cursor] macro for earthbind totem so I don't have to click twice for targeting. Focus macros for windshear may also be helpful if you find yourself in a more coordinated group.

Good luck.

For myself, hovering the mouse cursor over the friendly raid frames without having to change target has always been the fastest way to deliver heals and dps with the fewest clicks.

#showtooltip
/cast [@mouseover,help,nodead][help,nodead][@player] Healspell

Essentially all my healing macros look like this. it will prioritize my mouseover, then my target (if friendly), then myself. I'll usually have an enemy targeted anyway so if I'm not mousing over a teammate, it will cast on myself.

cool, i think i make up for stuff with the weird set points i have for the buttons for my mouse, i use space bar to turn on and off autorun and steer with the mouse, i never use the W,A,S,D keys to move or for anything, if im not on autorun i will use the aroow keys near the num pad to move and the num pad it set for targeting and the 0 is another autorun, its messed up, it was cause when i started i wasn't a PC gamer and was more use to a controller,

That sounds horrendous.
