On Pet Farming

solvogero

Legend
[edited] This list attempts to identify mobs that can drop two different pets (or even just one pet + some other bonus...like faction reputation or some other rare drop) to save time while farming up rares.

Consolidated farming (all but 8-10 can be done without P2P help)
  1. Defias Pirates in Dead Mines: Mechanical Squirrel (0.04%) and Green Wing Macaw (1.5%).
  2. Hillsbrad Sentry and Hillsbrad Miner in Hillsbrad Foothills: Mechanical Squirrel (~0.03%) and Black Tabby Cat (0.02%).
  3. Some mobs in Wailing Caverns (although the pets aren’t dropped by the same mobs): Mechanical Squirrel (0.05%) and Deviate Hatchling (0.2%).
  4. Most mobs in the Stranglethorn zones (although I suggest ones that also give Steamwheedle Cartel rep here or here): Razzashi Hatchling (~0.01%) and Hyacinth Macaw (~0.01%).
  5. Ebon Whelps in Wetlands: Dark Whelpling (0.9%) and Crimson Whelpling (0.01%).
  6. Angry Blight Slime and Blight Slime in Hillsbrad Foothills: Black Tabby Cat (0.01%) and Disgusting Oozeling (0.02%).
  7. Silty Oozeling and Black Ooze in Wetlands: Disgusting Oozeling (0.01%) and Crimson Whelpling (0.01%).
  8. Coldlurk Burrower, Dimensional Ooze, and Boiling Springbubble in Winterspring: Disgusting Oozeling (0.01%) and Azure Whelpling (0.01%).
  9. Noxious Whelps in Feralas: Emerald Whelpling (0.09%) and Sprite Darter Hatchling (0.01%).
  10. Zandalari Dinomancer in Isle of Giants: Zandalari Anklerender, Zandalari Footslasher, Zandalari Toenibbler, Zandalari Kneebiter (all ~1.8%)

Here’s a list of the pets we have available to F2P and where you can get them. While some are listed as Alliance or Horde, a player can create another toon of the opposing faction to purchase the remaining pets and they will be shared account-wide (you just won't be able to summon an opposing-faction pet). This list DOES NOT include other pets that can be obtained on a P2P account and then shared to an F2P (which is all of them).

I know everyone has been spoiled in the past by using the auction house on their P2P accounts, so do not underestimate the effort involved in farming those extremely rare "<0.1%" pets.

They will take a LONG time of dedicated effort and farming them all would be an amazing accomplishment even if you are using an 85 to speed up the process.

Good luck!

Nice guide man - thanks. I plan on following this as soon as my "main" is BiS.

Those mobs no longer drop oozing bags :/ Shifting Mireglob - NPC - World of Warcraft is your best shot.

I think its a question mark... Wowhead notes pre and post Cat are pretty unreliable...but a guy said he got it in Dustwallow Marsh 4 days ago and those are lvl 37-38 mobs (not that "the guy from wowhead" is legit). I can't remember when (within the last 6 months), but awhile ago i think someone else on here posted that they got it from a lower level mob.

Edit: found the thread...this guy says he saw it drop in Ashenvale.

Thanks for giving me some ideas on pets to farm next.

I'm currently up to 46 pets, and Rhaellia is in the lead with 48 pets.

Regarding the Disgusting Oozeling, while the mobs in Wetlands DO drop bags, the drop rate is insanely low, and your best bet is having a P2P help you farm in Swap of Sorrow (or kite oozes back to Stonard and let the guards finish them). It took me about combined 3-4 hours of dual boxing (with a P2P) to get the oozeling to drop.

whoa...go Rhaellia! ...looks like we'll know pretty soon if we can get the achievement pets.

The oozes are yellow, the guards will not attack them because you have to initiate combat. They will help you kill the spiders and things though

topic revival -
I was thinking about grinding the Parrot Cage (Green Wing Macaw) and was wondering is this even possible to solo as retri pally and how much time will be involved?
I know that I'll need to clear all mobs before those pirates including some bosses as well.

the pirates are only at the end of the dungeon...i recommend going ahead and doing the dungeon with a full group. after the end of each run, just stick around after everyone leaves the group...then go around behind the boat and clear the rest of the pirates solo. (i also use those pirates to kill me if i'm trying to take a short-cut to IF or SW...or for when i spent a couple weeks farming gloves).

i think in the last 6 months i've only had 1 group try to clear the pirates in the back.

this leaves you clearing the front half with the group (but getting there a zillion times faster than if you attempted to solo it)...and leaves the second half of the pirates for you to solo (and not having to share a roll).

Yes, it is very possible. I specced resto to heal DM and then hung around afters to clear the pirates solo. I could kill two at a time pretty easily, so roots as a CC allowed me to kill the 3-packs (as a resto druid).

After the 3rd DM run like this, I got the parrot :) It's only a 1-in-30 drop or so.

This sounds much more likely to be done tbh, as it will involve much less time for grind.
Since I can tank as retri pretty well, clearing the place with 4 other ppl shouldn't be the problem.

I guess these incoming 20 days of holiday will be all about fishing turtle and getting pets :D
