Hi everyone! I was playing wow with friends on warmane long time ago (wotlk). I want to play some wow for fun nowadays but on legit server without paying sub. Is f2p trash as it was used to be in 2015? Can you get any flying mounts with f2p characters? I would like to play as panda since I have never seen that island and they look cool but I don't know if I will be too limited with that race as f2p. I am sorry if i sound dumb but I am really out of the loop about this game.

Welcome back. F2P used to be big because of PVP, but Blizzard split the queues of F2P, and long story short, lvl 20s are now pitted against lvl 29s, resulting more often than not in a massacre for 20s. F2P PVE, however, has been steadily opening up more and more. There are a few flying mounts you can get, mostly from older expansions as the new stuff was slapped with a lvl 35 requirement to my knowledge. As to F2P on retail, it's honestly a pretty good time at the moment. Warbanking has made interconnected alts a legitimate thing, and flying is open to all. Racials have changed and profession-based ones are less important than they were. Also on the matter of racials, choose any race you like. Most of the races with stronger or more distinct perks are called Allied Races, and require some paid game time at some point to unlock. Grouping still isn't a thing (Well it is if you queue dungeons), and all of the old expansions are open via Chromie Time. You mostly cannot chat with high level players; I say mostly because sometimes the game decides you can for some reason. Bottom line, the social aspect of F2P is largely a solitary experience, but not always.

When I first began building toward F2P in 2021, I was going to hit 20, get a good outfit, and call it a day. It still surprises me how much farther I've been able to go.

In conclusion, if you're looking for some fun in F2P, there's a better than average chance you can find it.

Thanks for all info! I'm definitely trying wow f2p. Just one more quick question... is lvl 30 still required to learn flying mounts?

No, you will need to do a few quests in dragonflight content to unlock dragonriding though. Should only take like 40 minutes. can unlock it at lvl 10.

I'll add to Toskosa's reply by saying that the old flying is open at level 20, and should be learned automatically. You can switch between the flying types.

Hi,
I do agree with the other members,I think its very fun for F2P or veteran(that is without subscription, but if one had before) in PVE last few years or so.

In my humble view, subscribing at least once can make it much better, as well, as we can open up a lot of nice content for our 20s(mechagon, more zones in dragonflight, nicer flying, jeevsy etc.) yet even without it there is still a lot of stuff to see.

Technically the social part could be there, with communities and all, but people aren't using it much yet. I think in the coming events in the future 20s may be able to join some raids, so maybe that will change, no idea yet.

Now with the latest changes professions open up in a lot more accessible way as well, so overall - good times for the 20s in PVE now, in my humble opinion. Although again - much more fun if one subscribes every year or so for a month, to open up whatever new stuff has become available to open for the 20s, then move back. Not pure F2P, but if we play for fun, a lot more to see and do that way.

I agree: we should even add a section to the 20s Guide regarding what one should do with a month (or even weekend) of gametime, so as to better enjoy the FTP (Vet) experience.

(E.g., I recently used my gametime to unlock old Scholomance, which I've been farming for transmogs on my 20.)

Be careful what you wish for. If you could pay hourly or daily, expect a lot more grind and FOMO to encourage you to keep coming back.

That said, $15 isn't that bad when you want to get something above the unpaid level or gold cap. The trickiest part is remembering to disable and enable XP gain around the month window.
