F2P Mythical Treasure Chest Hunting Guide

1. Introduction

With the Battle for Azeroth Expansion just a few months away, we are drawing ever closer to seeing how the 8.0 patch changes will truly effect item level on Live Realms and if that item level will effect stats. I remember skimming across the Beta thread screenshots, and noticed there was a difference in how items from before patch 7.3.5 Scaling Overhaul translated into Battle for Azeroth’s item level squish, vs. the items that were looted after patch 7.3.5 and scaled to the looter’s level. This rang an alarm for me to start farming the only two sources of non-scaled equipment available right now: Vendors and Treasure Chests.

2. Synopsis

I will be looking at dungeons and world zones that are optimal for level 20s to farm the Treasure Chests, as anything too far outside of your level range will yield undesirable high level loot.

The dungeons I will be covering:

(15+) Deadmines
(17+) Shadowfang Keep
(17+) Wailing Caverns
(20+) Blackfathom Deeps

The zones I will be covering:

Kalimdor
(10+) Bloodmyst Isle
(10+) Darkshore
(10+) Azhara
(10+) Northern Barrens
(15+) Ashenvale
(20+) Stonetalon Mountains

Eastern Kingdoms
(10+) Ghostlands
(10+) Silverpine Forrest
(10+) Loch Modan
(10+) Westfall
(15+) Hillsbrad Foothills
(15+) Redridge Mountains
(20+) Wetlands
(20+) Duskwood

3. Dungeon Chests
Dungeons have Three (3) types of Treasure Chests you can loot:

3.1 – Deadmines
Number of Chests: 2
Possible Spawn Points: 2
Description:
The Deadmines always have two (2) Treasure Chests, and they always spawn in the same two fixed locations:

3.2 – Shadowfang Keep
Number of Chests: 3
Possible Spawn Points: 9
Description:
Wowhead only lists Eight (8) spawn locations for Treasure Chests in Shadowfang Keep, however there is one more location that isn’t listed that appears quite often in the main Courtyard, bringing the total up to Nine (9) possible spawn locations for a Treasure Chest, with only Three (3) spawning per instance:

3.3 – Wailing Caverns
Number of Chests: 1
Possible Spawn Points: 2

3.4 – Blackfathom Deeps
Number of Chests: 3
Possible Spawn Points: 6
Description:
Wowhead only lists Five (5) spawn locations for Treasure Chests, but I have seen one spawn in Domina’s cave as well. There are only up to Three (3) that spawn in any of the Six (6) locations:

6. Conclusion

6.1 – Dungeon Treasure Chests
When farming the Dungeon Treasure Chests, I found the best method to ensure you are the only one who is looting them is to draw as much attention AWAY from the Treasure Chest while running the dungeon with a Pick-up Group (PuG). That way the people who are leveling aren’t wasting the loot that may otherwise be your Best-in-Slot (BiS) one day. Pulling multiple rooms usually does the trick of distracting everyone.

Once the Dungeon run is concluded, most of the time your PuG will leave after claiming their Dungeon Quest rewards, which leaves you to backtrack and open up the Treasure Chests freely. If the PuG is doing multiple dungeon runs in a row, I like to politely ask if they can leave and re-queue without me, often telling them that I need some time to take screen shots of the dungeon for my New Player Guide I am writing. (In my case this is true, and feel free to use this excuse as well) However it may take too long to type out the whole reasoning, so I usually just say I want to take screenshots.

Just sitting and pretending to be AFK when the PuG wants to re-queue is risky, because they may give you the boot, in which case those Treasure Chests you saved up will be completely wasted.

6.2 – World Zone Treasure Chests
There isn’t anything special you can do other than to iron out your rounds when you are farming the Treasure Chests in World Zones by yourself.

However if you form parties with other like-minded farmers, you may all benefit from this by not wasting the loot that isn’t relevant to your armor class when it drops. Treasure Chests still maintain Loot Roll system, so you may even snag some higher level Bind-on-Equip (BoE) Transmog items that will auto-bind when you roll NEED on them.

I wish you all the best of luck in farming non-scaled BoEs that may become BiS if the pre-7.3.5 loot doesn’t get effected by the item level squish.

Cheers!

Don't forget about Runestone chests, though those are only found in the western most parts of Ashenvale.

5. World Zones – Eastern Kingdoms [UNDER CONSTRUCTION]
I really wished I noticed this thread earlier, as Shft's old thread/infos on world chests of relevance to level 19-24s contains many relevant informations pertaining to this thread's topic. In particular, it includes maps of multiple confirmed chest locations in zones linked below:

Ashenvale
Stonetalon Mountains
Hillsbrad Foothills
Arathi Highlands
Wetlands
Duskwood

This turned out really heckin' well.

Outstanding job! Up until this point, I was looking at pixilated maps on google from out-dated guides and many of the results weren't even for treasures..

I'll probably pin this.

There are some mobs that don’t drop scaled loot, I know some of the mobs in Gnomer don’t drop scaled loot. Ur only chance now would be to get lucky with one of the non-scaling mobs, otherwise that belt will always scale down on a 20 to like ilvl 23 or 19 or something like that.
Gonna be a big ask, unless ur sub’d and can find one on the AH somewhere.
Good luck!

I am willing to try out some Gnomer runs. In the meantime I will keep searching for it in a Treasure Chest.

As I have speculated while writing this guide: with the BfA pre-patch changes, the old equipment collected before patch 7.3.5 (non-scaled) maintained item level, and in turn has higher stat values than the scaled stuff that had its item level squished. Because majority of the quest greens now drop at 1 item level below your character level; having an item with 5 item levels above your character level yields some very good stats. Also the dungeon drops from before 7.3.5 maintained their item level, but that's not really relevant to this thread.

So back to BoEs. It would seem the Treasure Chests are still dropping non-scaled equipment (to be confirmed). And if that is the case, Treasure Chest hunting might yield some new BiS options, if you can score equipment with item level 24 or 25.

I love that thing. I had a dodge set on my rogue. Made a great FC.

Too bad that Block, Dodge and Parry are Tank spec exclusive now. Or at least I am under the impression that they are. Those secondary stats don't appear on DPS or Healer specs with Deja Stats add-on.

Yep, it sucks. :( I miss it.

I had 50%+ Dodge on my rogue at one point.
