Depends on your rng luck for drops but if you have someone who can boost you through the dungeons you should have some gear with sockets in a few hours

Maybe because the "best possible class" changes on a regular basis, whereas the class you enjoy playing doesn't. That's the problem with the twink community, everybody has to take the easiest route out there.

Why take all the time to gear, and then be mediocre? Doesn’t make sense.

Its pretty hard to be mediocre as a twink, when you're in a bracket full of levelers.
