Growing and protecting and growing the 20-24 bracket

In my experience growing anything has some basic principles that determine success or failure. The same goes for protecting anything. If you enjoy high level team strategy along with a thriving community of skilled players it requires effort as it does not just happen. The 20-24 bracket is growing and we owe our gratitude to those that have built it over the last year. Many of them are free to play (F2P) account players. Thank you guys/gals for your effort, deliberate or not, it is appreciated. :D

The principles for growing and protecting are often quickly met with resistance from those that can't see beyond the end of their noses. To them it is all about them and their little world and anything that speaks to more or others challenges the little box they live in and requires them to think and possibly change. Expect it and see it for what it is, fear. Fear is a visceral, gut level reaction and it lives in the immediate, here and now. There is such a thing as a healthy fear but we are addressing the prolonged fear that is stuck and says and does anything to protect itself, right or wrong. This is not about treatment or diagnosis it is about the damage this short term mentality can do to a community. Protecting something requires you know what you are protecting it from. I will attempt to condense my argument but the foundation must be laid for those who are new.

An example of short term mentality is leaving a battle ground (BG) early. The term for doing so is "AFK" and means, "away from keyboard". There are instances where life dictates you leave a game which are entirely understandable. However, that is rarely the reason given. The most often excuse is not "real life demanded my time", instead the reasons given reflect that all about me, short term attitude mentioned above. Some of the excuses given are:
  • "The team was not worthy of me"
  • "Its just a "PuG" (Pick up Group)
  • "I work too hard on my skills and gear to take a loss for this fail team"
When AFK is rampant new players who have queued behind these players get dropped into that same contest. Its not fun or fair to get dropped into a losing contest nor is it usually what the intention of those queuing are looking for. That is damaging to a bracket. To protect against this a community has to be proactive and establish that this practice is not acceptable except where real life issues force it. Even then some will continue regardless but the damaged is checked and the majority adhere to doing the right thing. Sure, Blizzard could do things to help but that takes time and is outside our control as players to do anything but make suggestions. We must make the effort to call out AFK for what it is, a detractor for the success of the bracket and the competitive fun to be had of an active, thriving community. To see an example of the resulting spin down of what was once an active bracket, look to the 15-19s and you will see rampant AFK. :(

Another short term mentality that damages a bracket is often called "farming". It is when a superior team deliberately delays winning a game to focus on killing the weaker team over and over again. Often it results in what is called "graveyard camping" as the superior team waits for the weaker opponents where they re-enter the game after being killed. No one enjoys losing but being farmed is worse. When a weaker team is being farmed or graveyard camped often players will AFK out of the contest. They get a debuff that does not allow them to queue again for 15 minutes which slows the queue times of players waiting for a contest. Some don't queue again after the debuff which further increases queue times. :(

Why do some superior teams and their players "farm"? The main reason given is that you get more honor points which is false as anyone who can read and do basic math can figure out that more honor is to be earned from winning quickly and often. Diminishing returns results from killing an opponent repeatedly which means less honor each time you kill that player. If you kill them at the GY you get nothing if it is within 15 seconds of their re-entering the contest as the are an "honorless target". Once the more honor myth is destroyed the next excuse offered up is that "they do it to us". Again, an often unfounded and more importantly, short term perspective. Making players AFK and not re-queue hurts the queue times. Slow queue times hurt the bracket. The point, farming and GY camping slow the queue times, don't do it. There is nothing to be gained by delaying a game repeatedly killing a weaker opponent. We must speak out early and often against this practice.

These are just a few examples of what we need to protect against by being proactive. Making the effort to stand up for what is right can be rewarded with insults and having to listen to the same old failed arguments but it is worth it. Over time it gets easier as it becomes the standard but we must put the effort in up front to protect from AFK, farming, GY camping and other things that undermine the success of the bracket. If we protect the 20-24 bracket NOW it will continue to grow and the game will elevate rather than go into a tail spin like the 15-19 bracket. Besides speaking out against what hurts the bracket we must also seek out ways to come together and communicate in ways that build rather than tear down. Trolling, while popular with some, is a detractor and thereby an enemy of anyone looking to attract more players. If we are not growing we are dying. Lets elevate our game by elevating our complete game. ;)

Please pardon the wall of text and the use of smiley's. Thanks for the read and good luck. :D

The people that post here that "hate the F2P scrubs" will also be the first ones posting complaints to Blizzard when their are no queues for the 20-24 bracket.

Also, lets say they raise the Free trial cap to 25 for MOP, they'll then complain how F2P ruined the 25-29 bracket.

Short term mentality... The big picture evades them. We must not let them destroy the bracket by not doing anything about it. Maybe one day they will "get it", maybe not. Either way you stand up for what is the right thing and in so doing demonstrate it. Showing the way is way better then telling...

I seriously doubt it, have you read some their posts.............................you need an English Translator.

They don't have the intelligence.

I understand your sentiment. However, as I can remember being a nit wit with no idea yet some mentor helped me I must follow suit. Show them the way. Ostracizing them does not teach. The right word at the right time can help. More valuable is the demonstration of what you believe by what you do.

Get rid of farming and huge imbalances and AFKing will follow.

Unless you can twist words so cruelly that you can make people AFK. Welp that's a whole 'nother problem.

EDIT: Kinda off topic, but I don't get how people enjoy faceroll/farming games. Isn't it mind numbingly boring? I know when I play, I want the other side to be even. I want to have to fight for that win and I mean really fight. I want to have to heal with everything I have and then just a bit more. Or DPS with everything I have while CCing/interrupting/etc. I want people that can give you a run for your money. I like seeing certain names (Muncee comes to mind). I want that 1/1 or 1/2 cap match.

I don't like faceroll. I don't like not being challenged. I don't like lopsided matches.

I know to each their own, but how do you not get bored with lopsided matches?

I have heard different perspectives and try to put my mind around what motivates others so I listen. What I hear is some want revenge, others need to be respected as great players, some its all a desire for attention. Personally, I don't like rolling weak opponents so we find things to keep it fun as we are looking for better teams...such as how fast can we end this thing so we can find a better team? We do crazy stuff and prepare for it before hand...stuff like filling the entire flag room with smoke bombs, dancing, dropping playground bouncy horses around and planning crazy stunts like all of us laying down in the flag room until the opponent shows up. We do anything but disrespect our opponent. We need them queuing and but we need them to understand they need to step up too. We do that without griefing them and while keeping our sanity by losing a little bit of it...

We also foster good relationships with other guilds of both factions and promote getting premade vs. premades. That can happen because we are not insulting them and making it personal and to the point were should someone lose they do not all gquit and in the future avoid premading because too much is at risk for those fragile egos. That is what happened to the 19s. They dodge each other in fear of losing...they trash talk a bunch, farm each other silly, afk out and do anything but show respect by building or earning it. Then they call everyone else noobs. Ironic huh?

The 2 most fun guns I have had in PVP so far was an AB match and an EOTS to where the win was a difference of 10 points and we came from behind.

Another was an AB where I played on my Lock and had 14 rogues in our group (that was random too!).

I agree, the smack downs where the other team can do nothing and everyone GY farms are boring as hell. I typically just hit the num lock and watch tv then, hoping i don't get flagged afk (and thats if I am on the winning side!).

All good stuff, not sure how much of it will stick with some of the more, resilient, players. nevertheless a good post for people looking to get into the bracket. Hopefully more premade Vs premades will be in our future!

P.S Sally people farm to get more skill, I shouldn't have to repost the algorithm for how skill=Hk's, but if you're having trouble understanding I don't mind for you <3

Darn it all, I forgot again!

But at what point do you become skill capped? Or is the sky the limit in this case?

Well, i definitely agree with the majority of your post. Unfortunately, most people won't be swayed by people they haven't seen face to face.

Unfortunately, farming is pretty rampant in this bracket and will most likely to continue to get worse. It's no secret that many people like to farm for whatever reason, but that is irrelevant. We can only hope that people will realize that farming leads to nowhere and that it is neither good sportsmanship nor positive game play and that it hurts the bracket overall.

You were also correct about the AFK part of your post. to be honest, if someone wants to afk for whatever reason, just let them, Chances are if they afk then your probably don't need them. People will always be selfish and do whats best for them and them alone. It's human nature, nothing new really. The only thing we can hope to do is teach new members of the community that actions like these are not positive and shouldn't be copied and try to teach existing members that if they want to keep this community from turning into a rotten Cesspool, then they should not participate in such ludicrous actions.

If someone wants to afk on my side or the horde side, let them. I'm not here to get educate the integrity of the game. You have people who are kids to adults. If someone on my team has to afk, no biggie , real life comes first. I'm laid back, it's just a game. To each their own .

I think "its just a game" means a lot of different things to a lot different people. I use the phrase as well. I suspect we all know it is a game. My point is how good the game is...
