F2P Mumble Channel / Voice Communication

PLEYA

Legend
For years most of us have been stuck with text-based chat and clunky software like Skype. The absence of proper voice communication, open to and easily accessible by everyone, has been severely limiting us as a community.
But today that will change! Thanks to two generous donations by Trapd and Activate I was able to rent and set up a Mumble server that will last us a year!
I hope you will all start actively using this service since a strong Mumble community will do us very good and will make playing with others much easier and more fun. And don't be afraid to come over just because you don't like speaking or don't have a microphone, Mumble supports text-based chat as well so you will be able to listen to others speak and reply with text.

Mumble is an open source VoIP-client (Voice over IP) which uses client to server communication. This means the software is light both on your computer and your network since all the heavy work is done by the server on which our channel is hosted. Mumble has a recording-setting low latency, meaning your sound and text will be delivered to other people in the channel at a speed faster than any other software has ever managed to achieve. At the same time the audio-quality is the best possible, in most cases only getting limited by the capability of your microphones, Mumble settings which affect audio-quality, and your internet-connection.

Now come enjoy the ability to talk with your fellow TwinkInfo F2Players, to form pickups(xVSx premades) with ease, to create your own temporary password protected channel for arenas, or just to hang out with your fellow realm-mates!

Address: F2PWoW.ga
or 85.236.109.242 if server connection ever fails.
Port: 2512

But wait! If you're not familiar with Mumble please take a moment to read through my short, easy to follow, image-accompanied guide below:

Installing Mumble

Mumble is available for all the popular operating systems, and also for iOS and Android devices!

To download Mumble click here or go to this address:
http://mumble.sourceforge.net/
Connecting to the F2P channel

1. Click on Server(or your languages equivalent if you're operating system's language isn't English) in the top-left corner of the Mumble window.
2. Click on Connect in the dropdown window.
3. Click on the Add New... button at the bottom of the new window.
4. Enter a label of your choice (this is the name the server will be displayed as for you), set the address to F2PWoW.ga, set the port to 2512, and then pick a username(this is the name you will be displayed as to others on the server, so choose one care). Press the OK button when you have filled all four fields.
5. Now just double-click on the server label and you will connect to the F2P WoW Mumble channel!
(6. When connecting to the server for the first time you will be asked if you accept the server's certificate which failed verification, press Yes. This message shows up every time you connect to any server for the first time.)
Registering yourself on the server

1. Click on Configure in the top-left corner of the Mumble window.
2. Click on Certificate Wizard in the dropdown menu.

3. Select Create a new certificate and press the Next button in the bottom-right corner of the new window.
4. Pick a name and use a valid email address.
5. Save the backup of your certificate in a safe location because you're likely to need it in the future. If you change system that is the file you will need to be able to continue using the Username you picked while connecting to the server.
6. Connect to the F2P WoW channel (skip this step if you are already connected).
7. Right-click your name in the Mumble channel.
8. Click on Register in the dropdown menu, then confirm that you want to use your current name and that's it! (Register won't show up if you're already registered on the server.)

If your name is taken or you changed system and aren't able to get to your certificate backup; post a comment in this thread and I'll help you out.

If you ever wish to change your name after having registered; just create a new certificate, set a new Username in the same window you set the server address and port and then register anew.
Setting up Push To Talk and improving audio-quality

1. Click on Configure and then Settings in the top-left corner of the Mumble window.

PAFUmiM.jpg

2. Set Transmit to Push To Talk in the Audio Input tab.
3. Drag the Quality slider all the way to the right in the Audio Input tab. (Skip this step if your internet connection is very bad.)

4. Click on the Shortcuts tab on the left.
5. Click Add in the bottom-left corner, then set the Function to Push-to-Talk and the Shortcut to whatever button you'd like to hold whenever you want to say something in Mumble. (Make sure it's an easy to press button like Tab, Ctrl or Alt because you will be using it a lot.)

6. Click OK in the bottom left corner of the window to apply your new settings!
Various useful features

1. Muting yourself, deafening yourself, recording, and changing your comment

6YYySPx.jpg

Don't be scared to deafen yourself. Mumble won't emit a sound so sharp your eardrums will tear apart, actully leaving your ears unfunctional. It will simply mute all sounds coming from Mumble.

Before recording I recommend that you first ask everyone in your channel whether it's ok that you record or not. It's generally seen as rude and suspicious when someone starts recording for no known reason, so don't do it.
2. Viewing a comment
In the guide above (1.) you saw how to set your comment, but channels can also have comments.
To read the comment of either a player or a channel, simply click on the C in a square next to the player's or the channel's name.

The square will be yellow if you haven't read the comment yet and grey if you have.
3. Disabling Text-To-Speech
To disable Text-To-Speech click on Configure in the top-left corner of the Mumble window and then untick Text-To-Speech.

4. Changing the look of Mumble
A. Click here or go to this address to find and download a theme that you like:
http://mumble.sourceforge.net/Skins
B. Once you've downloaded your skin of choice click on Configure and then Settings in the top-left corner of your Mumble window.
C. Click on the User Interface tab on the left side of the window and then click Browse... next to the blank field below the Skin text.
D. Browse to the skin you just downloaded, enter the folder, and double-click the .qss file inside of it. (You might have to extract the folder and then browse to the extracted folder for this step to work.)
E. Click OK in the bottom-right of the Mumble Configuration window, restart Mumble, and you're done!
5. Enabling the Mumble overlay to see who is speaking while in-game
A. Click on Configure and then Settings in the top-left corner of your Mumble window.
B. Click on the Overlay tab on the left side of the window.
C. Tick(enable, mark with an x) the Enable Overlay box in the top-left of the window.
D. Follow the instructions on the Layout screen to edit your overlay.
(E. Switch to DirectX 9 in your WoW options, the overlay is incompatible with DirectX 11.)

Getting your overlay to work can take ages, it seems to always be possible somehow but if you're not able to get it working on your own by messing around with different settings then you should look the issue up on Google. Also, try using the whitelist (you need to tick the Advanced box for this) and add Wow.exe and Wow-64.exe to it, and be ready to restart Mumble and WoW several times while messing around with the overlay.

There are many more settings which can be tweaked with and you'll have to figure the rest of them out on your own. Make sure to tick the Advanced box in the lower-left corner of the Mumble configuration mode window if you want to go deeper.

Awesome work! More people should join.

Thanks for the positive feedback guys! I had some bad luck yesterday though, I was planning on helping the people in the channel out with getting familiar with Mumble but my internet went out for the day.
It's back up now though and I will be trying to sit in the channel on and off for the rest of the day (provided my internet-connection doesn't go down again). So if you want to chat, need help figuring anything out, or want me to explain how some of the channel's features work; just connect to the channel! :)

I also added "Disabling Text-To-Speech" to the Various useful features part of the guide since it's enabled by default and can be very annoying if set up incorrectly.

I downloaded the app available for the iPhone and since then I can not connect into the server on my laptop.
"Server connection failed: the remote host closed the connection". I've true deleting the app, googled it as well but no luck.

So you are able to connect to the server on your iPhone but not on your laptop?

I don't see how those two would interfere with each other unless you're trying to log on with a username that is already registered on the other machine (and you're using different certificates on the two machines). It's probably just your laptop messing something up for you so I suggest uninstalling and reinstalling Mumble on it. And make sure to enter the address and port correctly of course.

Bump,
This should definitely get stickied.

Kudos to PLEYA and all of the donors that made this possible.

Thanks again guys. And by the way, if you can get enough US people on Mumble for a cross-realm Ally vs Horde premade I can show you how easy it is to set them up on here.
I have two subchannels dedicated for these premades, and using them makes starting premades faster and easier to start and run than they have ever been before.

Also, if you connect early and there aren't many people around yet, don't leave. I have seen a lot of people only connecting for half a minute and then leaving because no one else was around. But if we get a few more people connecting and staying within the next hours there will soon be enough of you here to start your first premade.

Hey thereeee, Pleya, thank you sooo much for this, also thanks to Trapd and Activate.
I'm trying to get people on Misha to use it but haven't been really successful, lol.
I hope more people join, I think mumble is a very nice idea.
Thank you again.

Ahh It seems to be working now! Might have been the certificates. I went in to configure>settings>network> I checked the "suppress certificate and password storage" box and I was connected! :D

You're welcome. :)
And thanks for trying. I also though it will be difficult to get some people to use Mumble, most WoW players aren't used to using voice communication and it can be difficult to get people to step out of their comfort-zone to try new things.

Awesome! :)
You won't be able to register without a certificate though and registering unlocks a few features in the channel. See if creating a new certificate (changing username might also be necessary) will work if you want to register yourself at some later point.
