1. Introduction
Hello, guys.
After doing all the possible Legion content on my level 20 paladin (zone quests, dungeon quests, rare mobs) I was only rewarded with 7x https://www.wowhead.com/item=124442/chaos-crystal. To say the least, it left me very frustrated, as I was aiming for at least 12x. I was looking for alternative methods of getting the crystals and most guides and fellow players recommended BoE farming. It felt like a long shot. I was not motivated to farm something with only a glimmer of hope that it would drop. Therefore, I continued my research with a simple goal – find an item that could be farmed by well-constructed method, rather than pure luck. That is how I discovered https://www.wowhead.com/item=136713/shadowruby-band. Since we are only going to need 3 of the 6 existing tier 2 Legion gems for this specific ring, a certain amount of luck will be involved. However, this guide will help you to reduce the “RNG” part to the minimum and you will be able to rely more on the method of your choice, rather than blind luck.
2. Disclaimer
Before you begin reading the guide or farming the rings, please keep in mind that for the duration of the farm, you will have to hold on to Legion Mining + Legion Jewelcrafting. If you are following the profession rotation presented in the Shadowlands F2P Baseline Guide, I HIGHLY suggest doing this straight after you get your first enchants (namely, after the Tailoring + Enchanting stage of the rotation). This way, you will be able to drop Mining, get Enchanting to disenchant the rings that you have crafted, enchant your neck, and after that - forget about Enchanting for a while (picking up Legion Enchanting again will cost you 1000g). Now that we got that out of the way – let us begin.
3. The Design
The rank 1 design (https://www.wowhead.com/item=137861/design-shadowruby-band) will be sold by https://www.wowhead.com/npc=100500/jabrul after you finish the Legion Jewelcrafting quest chain. You will be able to pick it up at the Legion Jewelcrafters straight after you learn the profession. It took me roughly an hour, but I bet you can do it faster. After that, you MUST run Neltharion’s Lair to unlock rank 2 design (https://www.wowhead.com/item=137864/design-shadowruby-band). THIS PART IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!!! Rank 2 design will cut the cost of https://www.wowhead.com/item=130181/pandemonite in half. It is the rarest gem of the 3 that you will need for crafting, because it can only be prospected from https://www.wowhead.com/item=123919/felslate. The other two gems (https://www.wowhead.com/item=130183/shadowruby and https://www.wowhead.com/item=130180/dawnlight) can be prospected from https://www.wowhead.com/item=123918/leystone-ore, which is much more common than www.wowhead.com/item=123919/felslate.
4. Farming Ore
Now that you have unlocked the rank 2 design, you can begin farming ore. Legion Mining is interactive, which means that you will be getting upgrades as you will mine. In other words, every mined ore gives you a chance of upgrading the specific mining technique, which in turn means the more you mine - the more ore you will get in the long run. Level 20 Basilisks will be spawning randomly as well, which will award you additional ore. You can farm ore in every Legion zone; however, I highly suggest Azsuna and Val’Sharah. Highmountain and Stormheim also have a decent supply of deposits and seams for ore mining, but the zones are rather difficult to navigate through without a flying mount.
As you will begin farming, you will notice that both Azsuna and Val’Sharah have tons of deposits and seams, which you can mine for ore. There are no specific routes that you should follow. Basically, just begin at a certain point of the zone and try to move upwards or downwards. Proceed in a circular fashion. In time, you will have certain routes memorized.
A very important, yet optional part of your ore farming will be this thing: www.wowhead.com/item=140217/boon-of-the-salvager. Enchanting your shoulders with it will give you random drops of https://www.wowhead.com/item=140225/salvaged-armor from any Legion mobs. Sometimes it may contain junk, but you can get up to 50x of each ore. I can confirm this, as I got over 40x of both ores in some of the armor caches. You will need Revered with Valarjar to unlock this enchant. After finishing the main questline, you will be Honored. To increase the reputation, you will be running Maw of Souls or Halls of Valor. This will reward you 275 reputation per instance. I highly suggest Maw of Souls, as it takes around 10 minutes to fully clear. You can cut this in half by asking a higher level to boost you. Personally, I did it via RDF with someone who had Chromie access. Took me roughly 12 hours.
Every time you mine an ore you have a chance to obtain 1x https://www.wowhead.com/item=124124/blood-of-sargeras. You can trade this in to this NPC https://www.wowhead.com/npc=115264/illnea-bloodthorn for 5x https://www.wowhead.com/item=123919/felslate or 10x https://www.wowhead.com/item=123918/leystone-ore. I suggest always going for www.wowhead.com/item=123919/felslate, as https://www.wowhead.com/item=123918/leystone-ore is much more common.
5. Prospecting
Now we get to the tricky part. Legion Jewelcrafting allows you to mass prospect ore, which means that you will be able to prospect 20x ore at once, rather than the standard 5x. You will want to avoid that. It will seem much slower but prospecting manually (5x ore each) will speed up your grind massively in the long run. Let me explain why:
Every time you prospect a Legion ore, you will receive a https://www.wowhead.com/item=129100/gem-chip. This item can be considered vendor trash, but it will be very useful to us. Basically, the https://www.wowhead.com/item=129100/gem-chip that you get will be the same color as the next gem that you will receive. If you see that the chip is yellow, it means that the next gem that you will receive is either https://www.wowhead.com/item=130174/azsunite or https://www.wowhead.com/item=130180/dawnlight. Therefore, you will be prospecting https://www.wowhead.com/item=123918/leystone-ore until you see a chip that is either purple, yellow, or green. When you see one of those colors, instantly swap to www.wowhead.com/item=123919/felslate, because not only it has a higher chance to give you tier 2 gems, it is the only source of https://www.wowhead.com/item=130181/pandemonite. You will be able to get www.wowhead.com/item=130183/shadowruby and https://www.wowhead.com/item=130180/dawnlight from prospecting https://www.wowhead.com/item=123918/leystone-ore, but I highly suggest switching to www.wowhead.com/item=123919/felslate every time you see a color of the gem you desire. If this explanation is a bit tricky, I kindly invite you to watch the video made by this lady:
This is the video I used to get the hang of it. This method helped me craft rings much more efficiently than usual.
6. Conclusion
Now that I got all methods covered, we can move to the question that everyone has in mind: is this faster than BoE farming? The answer is yes. Especially if you are playing on your own. It might seem a bit slow at first, but once you get a hang of it, it will be quite easy and chill. As different gems will start accumulating, you will notice the tendencies and you will be able to distinguish which gem you are going for next. Realistically, you should be expecting a ring every 8 hours at first, depending on how focused you are on ore farming. The numbers will increase drastically as you upgrade your mining techniques (via random quests and items you get from mining in Legion) and memorize routes in the zones that you will be farming in. By the end of my personal ring farming, I was able to craft 2 rings in 4-6 hours. I believe that this is a very stable, efficient and fun way of getting https://www.wowhead.com/item=124442/chaos-crystal for your Enchanting needs.
If you have any further questions, you can reach out to me in-game by writing a message to Donovan-DarkmoonFaire (EU) or my Discord – Jaska#6100.
I wish you the best of luck in your farming adventure. Most importantly, make sure that you are having fun. Otherwise you will get burnt out very fast. GL & HF!
