Critical Bug Found Please Report Immediately!!

But I think people are being paranoid. there's no reason for them to make twinking hard/impossible in classic. It's an iconic part of the game
While I'd love to believe you, there's already countless Players in every chat just about every day complaining about Twinks in BG's once released. Blizzard fucked us over due to Community outrage over years, it's possible they'll just cave again and "change" Classic so that Twinking in BG's is much more difficult.

Keep in mind, they've already changed Classic. It's NOT Vanilla WoW, it's modern Retail WoW with as much of Retail's functionality removed. Blizzard wasn't lying when they said they no longer had the original Code. So we are playing a reasonably accurate version of Vanilla that is being operated on modern WoW's Code.

Hey all : ) Thanks for replying to my thread and at least trying to discuss this.

Let me give a little more context on why I think this is "critical" and not just "a small change".

Back in BC me and my friend had what we called buff bots (they weren't bots), there were max level characters on a separate account which were used for nothing besides buffing our characters before battlegrounds. Twink are about pushing the limits and maximizing your potential, and hopefully pushing it further than anyone thought possible! Thanks in part to those buffs my 19 rogue was able to do only die 1 in 3 games, I carried all 3 flags about 1 in 3 games, and won most of my games while queuing solo. Queuing with a premed felt too easy so I rarely did it.

Now fast forward to my current plans for thinking, I'm a lot more skilled with numbers than I was back then I'm poured over the buffs possible and found all kinds of fun things!! Suffice it to say an estimated 2/3rds of my estimated best in slot power comes from the 11 planned level 60s, the BiS gear adds another 1/3rd. You might be thinking that's crazy, well it's not as wild as it sounds fun buffs like Dampen Magic at max rank can almost completely mitigate all incoming magic damage!! (At the cost of not really being unhealable) (In the level 19 bracket.)

Buffs are huge. Once upon a time Blizzard patch by patch, expansion by expansion hurt twinks, bits here, bits there. A notable nerf was when they did finally nerf buffs into oblivion.

Now Classic is supposed to take us back in time to before all the changes "for our own good". This is a large change, it effects levelers getting buffs in town and thinks heading into BGs. If we let them change this, there really isn't anything to stop them from changing anything else they feel like. Scaling people's level up in BGs is similarly potent today, you'd be shocked if they did that here, this too should produce shock to anyone who played back in the day and fully leveraged available systems!

This change alone quite literally ruins my plans for completely overpowered twinks, and thanks to buffs on enemies not being visible (unless a mage reveals them) it would be extra fun!! And yes Priests and Shamans with dispel abilities would be my worst nightmare ; )

buffs were always meant to scale down

at least in classic ...but always really tbh except for a few bugged buffs

didnt you make like 3 threads about this already

im 100% sure blizztards know more than you about their shitty game.

Thats why you didnt see 4k life twinks running around back in the day

but yeah buffs are gg hehe

Buffs scaled down. Just not all the way, atleast in BC. For example if a 19 priest buffed you with fort it would give you 8 stamina but if you got fort from someone with a higher rank it would give you 16 stamina, even if the priest got more when putting it on himself.
I'm pretty sure this is the closest to true, even in vanilla. However, the difference is the buff didn't automatically scale down, you had to manually select the highest applicable buff by trying each one. I do remember having higher levels buff you though because you'd still rather take a +1 rank on the buff rather than an equal leveled twink's buff.

Well it didnt scale per se it was more that for example the highest a 19 Priest could cast was rank 2 and the highest a 19 could recieve was rank 3.

Is this really true? Can anyone confirm based on very confident personal experience or some outside source that this is the way buffs worked back then : )?

If that is how it was intended to work then it is working for at least some basic buffs like Fort and MotW. Thank you all for correcting me : ) Now I just wonder why it became a free for all in BC : P

Isnt TBC when they removed previous spell ranks from your spellbook? Maybe?

If it's critical and it was the way it worked in Vanilla, OP report the bug, don't tell us to report it.

On another note, I see some replies saying their "intent" was to not have this because sometime later they changed it. That logic would imply we wouldn't have Classic at all because SO MANY things changed over time. If it wasn't addressed in Vanilla it should be there. Warts and all.

You could down rank in BC. I remember hitting the magic number of mp5 on my paladin where I could infinitely spam a down rank flash of light in Karazhan.

and yea you couldn't receive max rank buffs on lower levels. Everyone had an upper limit to what they could receive.

I believe that they are automatically down ranking the spells and that's a good thing. Used to be that those applying the buff basically had to do a trial and error to find the highest rank that would actually work on a low level character. For those a bit smarter, they would write or copy a script that would look at the level of the target and cast the highest rank that would actually work on the low level target. Issue is that those macros used the function "castSpellByName()" which wasn't a protected function in Vanilla, but became a protected function in Burning Crusade. Reason it because protected as well as a lot of other functions becoming protected was because people could write addons that effectively automated the playing of a character. So those functions are no longer usable by player created code and only callable by Blizzard signed code. But the ability to downrank spells is still needed and reasonable. Hence Blizzard does it automatically.
