BiS lvl 79 twink gear guide

Can I follow this as a 70 or would a level 70 not receive the sockets from those bosses?

As a 70 you will mostly gear from raids, but with the upcoming 8.1.5 patch some of your pieces will actually come from TBC heroics. For those, you can use the guide to see which dungeon pieces are best, and then compare them to the raid pieces to see which are better. Mail twinks especially will replace a lot of raid gear with dungeon pieces.

The consumables section is 99% the same for 70s, with the only difference being the AP flask.

I've added a section for 8.1.5, and also updated some sections of the spreadsheet with new items (notably shields, offhands, daggers, caster 1handers, bows/guns). I would appreciate if once the patch is out, people post here with any findings on what the new BiS is, and I will update as needed.

Of particular concern is whether physical dps should farm their weapon at 74/77 and not 79, so they can use the sharpening/weightstones or mana oils. Casters will definitely want to farm their weapon at lower levels, or for exisitng 79s switch to a ilvl 100 BoE, ilvl 100 crafted, or a green quest reward.

Please point out any other 8.1.5 specifics that I may have overlooked.

have you tried out mastery gear on your 79s ? i think they might be better
There are very few mastery options available to 79s, as mastery as a stat did not exist until Cata - so gear from TBC and WotLK has none. Your options are pretty much limited to enchants (Pandaren Step, gloves, rings, maybe cloak, off the top of my head) and I'm not sure if there's a crafted ring.

what quest are you t alking about here?
There's only 1 quest reward bow in the relevant section in the spreadsheet, check it out.

I checked out the mail armor section, and the following will interest resto shamans, for whom crit is at the bottom of their stat priority. Consider the Plunderer's Helmet for the meta socket, or the Shamanistic Helmet of Second Sight as an upgrade for the Mok'Nathal Beast-Mask. Likewise for the Gauntlets of the Tranquil Waves over the Gauntlets of Desolation.

Keep up the great work!
Thanks, will add these, all solid suggestions.

i found a bunch of green gear in the AH with mastery on it and made a quick set of gear outta it (with the helm and gloves of desolation set) and it hits very hard... shows 200 damage more on the aimed shot tooltip then the usual set of gear
heres a pic of what stats i got from it. anyway just trying to share my experience with it,,

Ah yeah sure, green gear will get you the mastery stat but you end up sacrificing too much. For a comparison, my hunter in standard socketed gear has 40% crit and 20% haste. I'll take that over the slightly higher base damage that stacking mastery via green BoEs gives you, any day.

By all means, mastery is strong for some classes, but the way to get mastery as a 79 is in my opinion via enchants, not by sacrificing sockets. Of course, rings and cloaks which we don't always use socketed items for are fair game for your suggestion, and if you want to use BoEs go right ahead. Though to be honest, if you're at that point in min/maxing your twink, you're way beyond the target audience of this guide and will be simming your char yourself :).

I did a bit of testing on my enh shaman to see how dmg is affected by not being able to use sharpening stones. On the PTR I compared tooltips for my existing https://ptr.wowhead.com/item=47508/aledars-battlestar&bonus=4136 (ilvl 109) and https://ptr.wowhead.com/item=27901/blackout-truncheon&bonus=4091 (ilvl 103) vs 2 crafted https://www.wowhead.com/item=41185/furious-saronite-beatstick (ilvl 100) with https://ptr.wowhead.com/item=28421/adamantite-weightstone . I of course removed the agi/crit gems on my existing weapons for a fair comparison (well, replaced with int gems techncially). The results:

ability --> ilvl 109/103 combo --> ilvl 100 combo --> % increase
Stormstrike --> 1130 --> 1163 --> 2.92%
Rockbiter --> 373 --> 382 --> 2.41%
Lava Lash --> 436 --> 452 --> 3.67%
Lightning Bolt --> 910 --> 923 --> 1.42%

In conclusion, for a 79 enh shaman you would do about 2-3% more dmg if you farm your weapons of choice prior to hitting 79, so they're ilvl 100 (or 99). Existing 79s - tough luck, there are no socketed craftable or quest reward weapons that are really worth using. Other melee dps specs will probably reach similar conclusions but I can't be bothered to check them :).

What are the numbers for the 109/103 combo if you do use the agi/crit gems? I get that you want to show the impact of weightstones, but no one would use the 109/103 weapons without those gems, so I think including those gems will give a more complete picture.

Edit: nevermind, I misunderstood what you were doing. You're saying to go with the socket weapons, but to get them ahead of level 79. My bad!

You got it :).

And are https://www.wowhead.com/item=23529/adamantite-sharpening-stone worse than the weight stones?

I'm not familiar with it and wowhead just gives that scaling jibberish...

They're identical, but weightstones are for blunt weapons while sharpening stones are for bladed ones.

So the fist weapons will work regardless, that's cool. Ok thanks! :)

I like options. Especially ones that don't involve ToC… ;)

I was lucky enough to get one hand of the deceiver drop just now. So with it in the mainhand, and a 100 crafted in the offhand, both with a weightstone, the stormstrike tooltip dmg is 1158 (vs 1161 with 2 ilvl 100 crafted). It seems that this will be the optimal way to go for existing 79s who can't obtain dungeon gear at the necessary <=100 ilvl any more.

So 8.1.5 is making 70s use dungeon gear, and 79s use raid gear.

Oh, how the turntables...

Meh, I never max all my consumables anyway, and you can't use them in arenas. One less thing to worry about imo.
