Advantages and Disadvantages of "Hybrid F2P"

Slone

Grandfathered
I've started to gather some information on what the upgrade actually gives you compared to a "pure" F2P account. Feel free to add to it, but please keep this thread on topic. This is for factual observation only.

Advantages:

Guilds:
  • Chat in a central channel without an addon.
  • Temporarily Store excess gold in guild bank.
  • Temporarily store and transfer items among alts and guildies without the need for mail.
  • Use the guild funds for repairs.
  • Have a fancy schmancy tag-line under your name.
  • Guild perks.

General
  • Higher profession levels while subbed.
  • Gain temporary access to trade and AH for items usually unobtainable to F2P.
  • Ability to permanently increase bank storage, including reagent storage.
  • Void storage is kind of meh, but it can be unlocked for storing transmogrification items long-term.
  • Mail. Useful for a few achivements, including the Hearthsteed mount.
  • Occasional possibility of free game time.

Disadvantages:
  • MUST remember to lock XP while subbed, or you lose access to that character while unsubbed.
  • $15 a month per license to subscribe.

While unsubbed:
  • Loss of crafting above 100 in professions. Needs more testing.
  • No access to guild bank, including withdrawing or depositing gold.
  • No native invitations, even to guildies.

We need more information on how this affects professions. Which professions do we lose access to over 100 skill level? Is it crafting only, or also using items? Post your results here.

Primary:
  • Alchemy
  • Blacksmithing
  • Enchanting
  • Engineering
  • Herbalism
  • Inscription
  • Jewelcrafting
  • Leatherworking
  • Mining
  • Skinning
  • Tailoring

Secondary:
  • Archaeology
  • Cooking
  • First Aid - Able to use, but not craft past 100 while unsubbed. (Old?) pure F2P accounts appear to bypass this.
  • Fishing

I have not personally tested enchants that F2P's can't normally get, but I've never heard of an enchant being "locked out". Before the heirloom tab, you could enchant an heirloom with top tier enchants and send them to your level one alt. They would just not be as effective.

About the professions on a Vet-account, you are able to level your profs up on a subbed account but you have no acces when you go Vet and let your sub expire. You won't be able to craft anything above level 100. You will have to stack everything in your bank for future use.

Also if you have your FA up to 225 and are able to use it on your trial account (old characters hotfixed FA is bugged for trials) you will probably lose the acces to it when you go Vet. They are all locked on my Vet-account and assuming an upgraded account would experience the same.

Am not able to do any of these 2 on my Vet account. Just so you know.

Meaning we can't use anything better than mageweave once the sub drops, or we can't craft anything better?

You can use everything up to 225 FA but you can't craft any other then (heavy) linen cloth bandages just like normal trial accounts these days with exception of the ones who have bugged FA and can craft up to meageweave. It was just a warning that crafting gets locked once you go Vet after sub for the ones with bugged FA and of course a hint to stack bandages in your bank before you are surprised that you can't craft > heavy linen cloth bandages when you are going Vet anymore.

as a pure f2p, i can still create silk and heavy silk bandages. does that means vets actually have a disadvantage in first aid? does that affect other secondary professions as well?

and other advantages for vet. 7 day free game time every 3 months. 10 day WoD trial for more free game time (im not sure if this is 1 time or recurring)

Could you link a source for the free week every three months? This is the first I've heard mention of it. The 10 day trial is once per expansion, I believe.

I've updated the source post. Looking for info on all the professions, so we can see if this is consistent or not.

this was the original one i found

although people on this forum keep saying it is 10 days. actually im also confused if it is 10 days or 7 days. or maybe it is the 10 day WoD trial that is available every 3 months. can someone who knows about this give more information?

The 7 free days is because Blizz completely fucked the launch of WoD. It was for all accounts. A one off. Their way of apologizing.

10 day WoD trials, for those that don't have WoD, are exactly every 3 months.

It seems so lol and I could just test FA atm no other professions don't want to log any of my xp-locked twinks due to 1 xp to ding, if it is a bug I don't know.

I got just 5 days because they f*ked up the launch.

What I believe is that the 7 day trial is e-mailed to you and you have to follow the link in it after and is intended to get people return. The 10 day trial is the WoD try-out through b-net account. (I am certain the 10 day wod trial is every 3 months but I am not getting the 7 day trial every 3 months through my e-mail).

I am not certain. It was something after a year? There were no patch notes for it and we trials were able to learn FA till 225. At a certain point they restricted it to, I believe, heavy silk bandages and now on my vet account I am only able to make (heavy) linen cloth bandages. I do not kow how it works now for pure trials and how high they can learn FA but I assume also the heavy linen cloth bandages? Has anyone done this recently?

The bugged part actually is that the people who done FA till 225 before the change (it was never intended we could go that high, I believe, it was red and said trial cap reached or something) got to keep it and are still able to craft the max bandages you can make with 225 FA, mageweave bandages.

secondary professions were never capped before. we could have 225 first aid and achaeology capped by level limit, and 375 cooking and fishing capped by gold cost to train. maybe you should test out the other secondary professions to see if it is capped for veterans

Didnt lock xp on any of my toons and still have access to all of em now that my acc ran out.

many moons ago we tried to figure out exactly what the triggers were for free retries but I never got enough data samples to figure it out. Its not every 3 months but sure did seems so there for awhile. I'm sure it has more to do with timing of expansions, major patches, time of year, etc. Bottom line is once you've paid your $5 (or however cheap you can get it), you'll occasionally have free re-tries (historically sometimes 7 days, sometimes 10 days) to knock out whatever p2p stuff is on your wishlist. ... And use the retries when you get them because they expire.
