My thoughts/analysis of gy farming to pass a quiet evening while the private server downloads:
GY farming is bad only if someone holds the flag instead of capping, to draw out the game on purpose. Otherwise, it's just a good strategy. Keep the enemy team locked in a small area so you can run the flag back and forth 3x for the fast win. Less time chasing people who have no chance to win across the map. Greater efficiency, faster game ending so everyone can sooner get into a hopefully more even game.
It is worth noting, btw, that fighting out of one's graveyard imparts a huge advantage, so if a team is getting farmed in their gy, they'd have no chance fighting in the field.
This is because: 1. Focus and energy don't get used for the first few seconds after resurrecting in gy. On my hunter, I used to rez, explosive shot, and spam about 7-8 arcane shots into somebody before running out of focus and health. I almost always got top damage over anyone on the team that was farming us.
2. If I killed one doing that, they had to rez(1-30 seconds) and ride back across the field for an additional 20 seconds or so to get back to combat
3. All the ranged classes can just step behind unassailable LoS any time they feel like it to avoid taking damage.
4. If the dominant team has melee classes in your gy, your team can LoS their ground support and 10v1 or 10v2 them. Again, that huge positional advantage. I'm not saying this does happen, only that the advantage/potential is there.
There's a common tendency in humanity to mistake effect for cause. People notice a correlation between getting roflstomped and getting gy farmed and sometimes, without realizing it, unconsciously assume that getting gy farmed is the reason they are getting roflstomped. 'If we could just make it out into those wide green pastures of the gulch, what glory would await us!" But sadly, no. Getting roflestomped is the cause, and getting gy farmed is the effect. The team got stomped in the field first. That's how they ended up in the gy where they have the highest advantage.
The nicest thing the dominant team can do in that situation for the losing team is to keep them bottled in their gy and dead while running the flag 3x as quickly as possible to end the mismatch. They are to be commended, as long as someone is running the flag.*
*Also, in the first week of an expansion patch, people may forget to(or not want to) run the flag, because they are there to test the class changes.
Recommendations:
I actually kind of ENJOY getting gy farmed. Here's why. I change my goal from winning the bg(which is not going to happen) to some alternate personal goal that I have a reasonable chance of achieving. If I'm a dps class, it's usually to try to get top dmg over the all the 29s farming us - a worthy goal but possible with the gy advantages. It's a fun challenge. You KNOW all those 29 BMs, or w/e is the new dps fotm, are gonna check the dmg column after the match to see who did the most, and be like 'wtf!'
If I'm a healer, I might try to get top healing, which is fairly easy since my team is taking so much damage. The enemy healers don't have anything to heal. Or, if I decide my team mates are simply not worth healing, I try to see how much damage I can do, maybe out-damage all of them and get top healing. It's like a whole different mini-game, like the one to get the sunflower pet. A fun change of pace from capture-the-flag.
If I'm a stealthy, I might try to sneak out of the gy and gank some squishy target in the back.
If the enemy team is drawing out the game on purpose(which is lame), I like to try to get to their flag room right at the end, grab the flag and stop their third cap (mostly did that back when people got honor points per cap, and the points were useful.)
And finally, it's a good time to leave the battleground and do Arena Skirmishes, OR, go afk and make a sandwich. And there's always porn. God bless pornography, and all those beautiful hoes.
