I've also heard it said that twinks in games are called that because it's more politically correct than saying gay, (IE: lame, not sexually related) as twinks aren't fondly accepted by most levelers.

If I recall, the History goes that "Twinks" was used similarly to what we'd call "Sugarbaby" today: a low level character that gets gifted expensive and powerful gear by another high level and rich one.
