Survival is by far the best hunter arena spec. For bg's one could argue that Aimed Shot carries more weight, but I'd still pick surv over MM.

I havent seen his armory my guess is that he uses boulder pads and they've been mogged to hidden right?

You can mog any armor type to cosmetic pieces regardless of whether or not it's your designated armor type. (I.e leather on hunters, mail on pallys, etc.) Since hidden appearances are considered cosmetics they are also included

Haste doesn't scale too well down here in the 20s.

The good news is, you're free to build however you like. If you wanna build a haste stacked hunter, go for it! There's plenty of options gear wise.
