yes, but people take shots to the jaw all the time in combat sports, the reason he was KOd with 1 punch was because he didn't have time to mentally prepare for the shot, he was caught off guard & didnt see it coming. (majority of sucker punches end in knock out because of this.)

Because those people that were on the receiving end of the "sucker punch" were not tensed up and their muscles did not react quickly enough. Which led to the condition I described above. Had they been ready, their heads would not have spun so quickly and their brains would not have been so violently crashing back and forth inside their cranium.
That is the idea behind competitive fighting. Trying to land a punch when they are not "ready". If your opponent was "ready" for your punch you would never land one. Thus, you want to hit them when they are not ready or where they are vulnerable.
Although, some fighters have used the alternative strategy and LET their opponents hit them just to tire themselves out. AKA "rope-a-dope".
