I have a sub acct, as I'm sure many of you have. I wanted to plan out a lvl 20 twink to put on it so I have something to play when I'm unsubbed. That got me thinking what I need to do to maximize that character so I came up with a list and thought I'd share it here.
1.)LOCK YOUR CHARACTERS XP!!!!!!!!
2.)Buy Heirlooms
3.)Get Remaining gear
4.)Enchant time!!!!!
5.)Professions!!!
6.)Supply you char for the long haul
So this is my checklist and a lil' description of each one. I'm always looking for ways to make it better and improve on my own chars so if you have anything to add plz let me know!!
1.)LOCK YOUR CHARACTERS XP!!!!!!!!
It may seem stupid, I sure did, but it happens. The first char I was working on was a hunter on turalyon and well...... let's just say I have a very sexy lvl 21 xD. The xp locker for alliance is Behsten in SW and Slahtz is the locker for you hordies in Org
2.)Buy Heirlooms
Heirlooms are BiS for each Slot there is a loom for. So you want to make sure whatever chars you wanna twink is pimped out in looms. The main place to purchase looms now is Krom in IF and Estelle in UC. With exalted rep, each looms costs 400-600g. These vendors sell shoulder, neck, chest, trinkets, and weps/off hands. To get cloaks, headware, and legs, you need to be in a guild. Every city has a guild vendor and they all sell the same stuff. A final place to get looms is the honor heirloom vendors, Liliana and Galra.
3.)Get Remaining gear
Currently there is 5 slots of gear that have no heirloom. These slots are wrist, hand, waist, feet, and fingers(not counting Dread Pirate Ring which is unique so u need at least 1 more anyway xD). Most of the BiS in these slots are rare BoE drops or found in dungeons/from dungeon quests. The BoE ones (like Mindthrust Bracers) can easily be farmed on a high lvl char or just bought in the AH. So save yourself tons of hassle and just do that xD.
4.)Enchant time!!!!!
Now that all your gear is BiS it is time to make them even more BiSier xD. The biggest benefit a "vet" account has over a pure f2p is the enchants they have access to. I asked around and was pointed in the direction of this spreadsheet created by Aelobin @ The Maelstrom (EU) (u da best ;D). I was warned tho that the stats are a bit off compared to the tooltip on wowhead but what is best on the spreadsheet should still be best, just with different numbers.
5.)Professions!!!
NOTE:After your sub lapses, you can only make things up to profession lvl 100 but can use stuff up to your skill lvl. So if your an eng, stock up on dem bombs xD
A lvl 20 char, without restrictions of a f2p acct, can get a profession to lvl 225. You want to max out what ever professions you want to have before your sub lapses, right? well........not necessarily. Lets go over each of them.
All professions but 2, in my opinion, is useless to get on your vet char. Tailoring (bags), Lwing (armor kits if ur a tank), Bsmithing (sharpening stones), Inscription (scrolls), and Jewelcrafting (statues) all only have 1 slightly useful item for a lvl 20. That makes them not worth it as a profession. Enchanting is also kinda useless because the best enchants require higher lvls than 225 so your gonna get them from other sources (One of ur high lvl dudes, a buddy or AH). Gathering professions no longer give you a benefit so they are only usefull now for supplying your production profession. That leaves 2 useful professions; Alchemy and Engineering.
The first profession I want to look at is Alchemy. This is an obvious pick for all the pots/elixirs you can make. This is my choice for most of my chars. There is only one problem I have with it, after you level alchemy to 150 all pots and elixirs require lvl 21+. This makes me feel like i'm wasting 75 skill points. This obviously isn;t really a problem at all, just something I noticed.
The other and in my opinion the greatest profession for a "vet" account, Engineering. This is the only profession(with the exception of a few items) that a lvl 20 char can use everything it makes up to a profession skill of 225.Almost all items you make as an engineer doesn't have a lvl requirement, instead it requires an "engineering" lvl to use.The highest lvl mats u will use as an engineer at 225 is mithril. Mithril is found in lvl 40-50ish zones and isn't as hard to farm as you think. There is parts of felwood and tanaris where there isn't hostile mobs and is easy to farm. I managed to farm a full stack of mithril on my druid the other day.

6.)Supply you char for the long haul
The final step in completing your char is to give it quality of life benefits. This includes the following
-Change your hearthstone to 7stars/2moons!!! This can be done on a f2p acct too but it is something that makes life easy. This isn't needed for mages because they can tp to any kalimdor/EK city already but it could still be nice to get to the neut cities.
-Give lots of gold!!!! Once an account lapses, any char with more than the 10 gold limit keeps all the gold it has and can spend it freely. It just can't gain more. So give it as much as you want/can so you have some spending money ;D
-Unlock all bank slots and reagent bank!!!! A f2p account can only afford to unlock 3 bank tabs. for just 200 more gold you can unlock 4 more tabs and get the 98 slot reagent tab. 10000% worth it imo.
-Supply with prof items!!!! You know how I said earlier that those professions with only 1 item that's useful isn't worth having as a profession? well, thats because you can just buy them in bulk from the AH or someone. They are also dirt cheap because ppl usually make those items just to lvl their professions cheaply so they will be practically giving them away.
-Join a guild!!!! As long as one of your chars is in a guild, you can join that one on any char after your sub time expires. I know that there's a guild on AP called AP Twinks that is filled with f2p/vet players and their subbed chars as well to help each other out. Other realms I'm sure has something similar, but I only play on AP and Turalyon.
