State of twinking (20-29 bracket) in 8.0.1

I'm new to twinking. Been reading up forums, discussions and checked out twink armories, and noticed a common trend. A lot of high ilevel gear has been made unavailable or now scales according to the level that it was obtained.

  1. Is this observation correct?
  2. What can a twink do to gear up? I'm currently using mostly heirlooms because they seem to be BiS, or close to it.
If it matters, I'm playing a 29 SV hunter. Thanks!
 
I don't know how it is exactly for hunter but for a lot of classes the blue gear from the bg crates seems to be BiS or close to it. There's also tons of decent BoE gear that you can snag from the AH at times. I'd say look at some of the armories both on EU and US and check what kinda gear the other hunters are running.
 
This transitional patch isn’t too much unlike the others. Each one items become unavailable and new items become BiS.
You shouldn’t concern yourself with not having items that aren’t available anymore. The stats they provide aren’t significant enough to make that much of a difference individually anyway if you obtain all of the BiS items you can get today, especially on a level 29 character.

To be completely honest, don't worry about GF'd gear.

Hell, I made a 20 Void Elf Fury Warrior, threw on heirlooms, enchanted them, and went 23-0 nuking people earlier.

You'll do fine.
 
SV isn't even FOTM anymore, though.

BM and Surv are both scarier and used more.

sv is just new so noone understands it. a sv that understands his new spec can still do quite good dmg. not as retarded as legion but like i'd say its still up there for burst dmg from what i've seen but then again i'm just a disc priest so what do I know ab hunters
 
Here is the truth about the 29s that will eventually direct all builds for the entire BFA duration given they don't alter the current state. You can get to 30%+ versatility on most toons. Just do that, and you will win. You are super hard to kill and you do lots of damage... just what you want for PvP. A few retard builds like full Glass Cannon Rogue or Arcane mage, might just go pure base stats, but even then its pretty much on par with just tacking versatility... which also makes you live longer.
 
1. Yeah. There is grandfathered gear. Don't worry about it if you don't have it.
2. It depends on playstyle and class/spec. But generally...

Get engy goggles for head
heirloom for neck/shoulders
BG crate blues are almost always BiS
BoE legs with enchant (or BoA)
Otherwise any dungeon blue, heirloom, or BoE green with the stats you want
If leather/mail/plate caster, consider looking into the WC sets for lots of int
Weapon with elemental force (or flintlockes woodchucker)

That gives you enough to get started. There will be a few one-off pieces of BoE gear (parachute cloak). There will be lots of items with randomly generated suffixes/secondaries that you'll have to wade through to find your BiS options.

Generally verse is the best secondary.
