Decided not to get put under when I had my taken out, just local numbing. Not fun. You can still feel pressure and unpleasant feelings and the needles they use are quite long to get to the correct nerves in the mouth. I remember a lot of crunching sounds, as well as the smell of something burning. I had all 4 of mine removed and one needed to be cut in half due to having an extra side root making conventional pulling techniques difficult.
The freakiest part of the whole thing was after I got out and tried to speak but couldn't form or make any words at all because both of my lips were completely numb. It's a strange feeling not being able to communicate. It all eventually went away and I was back to normal. Not being able to brush my teeth sucked and felt gross. You have to rinse your mouth out with salt water for about a week or so depending on how fast you heal and having to keep the gauze pressed against the areas the first day or so to help it clot wasn't much fun either. Couldn't eat solid foods for a little while and the meal replacement drinks taste disgusting.
All in all I wouldn't recommend local numbing. You get cool little divets where the teeth were and it heals pretty quickly. The pain isn't even that bad and I didn't require any pain killers. Horay for useless teeth! Also congrats to everyone for getting old. It's only down hill from here friends.
