Shadowfang CAN still drop-Fact and here is why...

Okay kiddies, listen up, it's time for the facts.

Its formula for dropping has not changed since the sword's first drop.

-SF has an ilevel of 24.

-In SFK, any mob over the level 21 can drop it. Back in the day when every mob was level 21+ it was dropping very consistently.

-After the huge instance nerf (the one that "repaired" low level instances, turning instance boss greens to blues, nerfed bosses and mob levels, serpent shoulders weren't nonbinding whites etc.) it left I believe 5 possible mobs to drop an ilevel 24 item, including Houndmaster, Fenris, Odo, Arugal, Deathsworn Captain.

-These 5 mobs were at least level 21 and therefore had the .001% chance of dropping sf (original zone drop rate I believe)

-Now Godfrey, Walden, Deathsworn Captain, Commander Springvale, and Baron Silverlane are said to be level 21. (Haven't been in SFK in a long time to see if this is true)

If those 5 are level 21, they share the same drop chance of Shadowfang or Assassin's Blade, infact it is the same drop rate the sword had back when it was first dropped.

The reason it "doesn't drop any more" is because instead of having it able to be dropped from all mobs (however many there are) it can only be dropped from 5. The drop rate is just stupidly low from any of these 5 because its low drop rate used to be evened out by the amount of mobs able to drop it. If you are trying to farm this (I wouldn't waste my time, already wasted so much time for it back years ago) your only concern would be those 5 mobs + any and all chests (even locked). I personally have had an assassin's blade drop from a regular chest under the stairs before you headed towards where Fenris was. That being said, that drop had a 50/50 chance of being either Shadowfang or Assassin's blade. For absolute definite proof that I am 100% correct, see the f2p hunter wielding a shadowfang. He could not have had a cleaver lie saying he was trading someone for the item, and something got messed up, he also could not have also said that he had it at one point etc. The sword dropped. If you were to ask him who dropped it, I would not be surprised to hear him say either one of the 5 mobs mentioned above, or from a chest.

This isn't new info. And with Blizz being dodgy about DRs and the lack of them on US Auction Houses it just might not drop. If you're basing your info (or anyone for that matter) on what a GM tells you, you just might be wrong (because they're wrong a lot).

The fact that I got one for 14g last week was all i needed to see. Who would have one stored in their bank for over a year and then sell it for 14g?

i had this theory about 2 months ago, but one flaw with the chests. Assassins blade is ilvl 21 and seeing as 19s BoE drop from level 25+ leveling areas chests and SFK being a 15-21 instance i doubt sf would drop from chests inside SFK.

Also ive been pickpocketing all mobs that can be pickpocketed and after about 20+ runs not even greens where dropping. Only 9copper :/

Did the other thread about this get deleted or something? Seriously, this is useful information...

good morning lol

I posted about this 5 months ago on wowhead under shadowfang comments,

I always say the rule is: a mob cant drop an item higher level than itself (the item's required level to equip),

as you know mob levels lowered on shadowfang keep after the shattering, only bosses are over lvl19 now so only those can drop shadowfangs

and so mobs can still drop assasin's blades

and a side note thats why tarantula silk sash dosent drop from the rare spawn in redridge anymore

^^^ Exactly... Lots of people are ignorant. They think Blizz knows how op SF is for a 19... so they believe they nerfed the drop rate rofl. This isn't even a Shadowfang issue, this is simply an item in a npc's past loot table, once that npc's level got nerfed, there is a chance it cannot drop what it used to. I'm sure a very basic mob can't drop something 4 ilevels higher than itself, which is why the best places for level 19 boes are bfd and stockades. It also explains why CB got nerfed (because VC got nerfed and the bop boss loot must reflect the target instance level to begin with, the only reason some boes still have their higher levels/abilities is because they are boes generally not added to a certain loot table, but to a "world/instance" zone drop and not a bop boss drop)

There are hundreds of examples of this same problem, mob gets nerfed, doesn't drop (insert desirable item here) any more or it is extremely rare.
