1. Introduction

You should take into consideration that this guide is only viable with level 20 questing, dungeons and hard PvE encounters in the open world. It’s also very important to mention that this guide is for Pure F2P accounts and not veteran accounts. In this guide I will mainly focus on optimizing your Insanity generation and how to correctly manage your Insanity as a Shadow Priest. Insanity is the purple bar below your Mana bar. This guide will be constantly updated.

2. Rotation

1. Always remain in Void Form.

2. There is a spell called Void Eruption. When you have the chance to cast it, cast it!

3. After this casting Void Bolt is a priority in order to stack insanity. Shadow Word: Void should be casted when Void Bolt is on a cooldown.

4. It’s a common mistake that Shadow Word: Pain is used on hard-to-kill bosses. Shadow Word: Pain should only be used when the tank has pulled a lot of mobs. You should spread Shadow Word: Pain to large groups of enemies. This is of course a priority when facing weak targets. When facing an elite or high level this step should be avoided.

5. Use Mind Flay as a filler.

6. If not collected powerful enough gear yet, cast Flash Heal to compensate the health drain.

3. Talents

When you reach level 15 you should choose Shadow Word: Void. Shadow Word: Void replaces Mind Blast and has two charges, at the cost of a slightly higher cooldown but generating more Insanity and doing more damage.

When reaching level 20 you should go with Gladiator’s Medallion. Gladiator's Medallion is an on-use ability that removes all movement impairing effects and all loss of control effects.

4. Stats

Intellect > Critical Strike > Haste > Versatility > Mastery

As to Stamina. You should have more stamina compared to intellect. A ratio of 7/8 is desirable.

5. Gear

This section is a work in progress.

Before getting BiS (Best in Slot) you should go questing in Stonetalon Mountains. Stonetalon Mountains has easy to access gear for a cloth-wearer. As to weapons you should use a wand and an off-hand as the stats are ideal for spell-casting.

6. Enchanting

Before enchanting you should pick up tailoring. After crafting some white items you can craft green items. These green items can be turned into Strange Dust, Lesser Magic Essence and Greater Magic Essence. These are crafting reagents used for making enchants.

Enchant your chest with Lesser Health and NOT Lesser Mana. Running out of Mana is incredibly rare.

Enchant your cloak with Minor Protection.

Enchant your wand with Minor Striking.

Enchant your bracers with Minor Health.

Head: stonetalon head
Neck: satchel neck
Shoulders: stonetalon
Cloak: cape of the brotherhood
Chest: Blue bg reward
Bracers: bg crate reward
Weapon: Blue bg crate reward
Offhand: Blue bg crate reward
Gloves: Gold flecked until you can get ilvl 28 magefist
Belt: sanguine easy or ilvl 23 kellers girdle until ilvl 28 kellers girdle can be aquired
Legs: Bg Blue reward
Boots: Bg blue reward
Ring 1: Advisor/Lorekeeper rings
Ring 2: bg reward or satchel ring
Trinkets: 2 int heirloom

Heres a gear set for you.

Edit: Also dont enchant your bracers with minor stamina it doesn't actually give stamina. What you're gonna wanna do is get your hands on a formula for the minor spirit on bracers enchant that gives 1 or 2 versatility.

Edit 2: Not entirely onboard with the whole crit gearing I'd put it behind both haste and versa especially on a class that gets alot of it's damage from dots.

Great info!
You'll just need a few adjustments before we can move your thread to the guide section. We always try to have a recurring pattern within our guides although it isn't stated anywhere.

  • Provide links (spell tooltips, items, player armory, etc)
  • Visual appeal (formatting, coloured text) to make it catchy and stimulating to the eye.
  • The gear section felt a bit underwhelming (no links). You spoke about insanity management, and I guess I was hoping to see it brought up in the gear selection. Left me high and dry haha.
All in all its a good guide to build upon. I can delete @Goesid post if you'd like to reserve the 2nd post on this thread (and mine as well ).

Great work!

Great work!

I mean be doesnt really have the amount of content to justify multiple posts. He probably won't get enough since he is leaving pvp out of the guide which is a major part of twinking for most players and also only focusing on one spec and only pure ftp nothing about vets or linked.

Honor talents are personal preferences. I recommend Driven to Madness as it decreases the time to use Void Eruption. May you focus more on survivability Void Shield is a good choice.
Pardon my ignorance but what is the relevance of this to a F2P?

Great work!

Insanity management has nothing to do with gear. How you use your Insanity most efficiently is described in the Rotation section.

PvE guide so no PvP gear.

Edit: Crit gearing is useful in hard PvE encounters.

You can still use pvp gear for pve especially when it's the best gear you can get. Versa and haste should still offer better value though it's pve so I suppose it doesn't really matter.

yeah bg rare >

but there's a lot of pve f2ps that do little to no BGs, they rock a full set of the best dungeon gear for their spec and maybe a bg rare here and there if they're lucky enough to get them to drop from the little amount of bgs they do

they're more interested in collection, rep, completion (i.e finishing all the quest zones,) shit like that so getting a full set of proper bg gear might seem unlikely for some
