I am noticing more and more vet players who run a subbed account on the side, for whatever reasons.

I am thinking about transferring my toon off onto a side account, I am wondering about the best way to do it.

Can someone please explain it in detail please? I have 3 days left and would like to take care of this before my sub is up to minimize downtime.

I have a seperate wow1 account under the same log-in, but it's starter edition, do i need to upgrade it to shadowland first and then transfer my 20 onto it?

(P.S., the main reason I am doing it is primarily AH-related. So I don't need shadowland at all, I just want a toon that I can continue to use for AH activities.)

(I'm pretty sure) the account has to at least be vet, no need to upgrade it to SL though. I remember it not letting me xfer my vet to a starter edition account, but luckily I had a few 'vet' status accounts from RaFing myself so I just throw my 20s there.

You are booted from your guild when you xfer a toon, keep that in mind, if you don't have a toon on that WoW account in the guild, you won't be able to get back in until you get gametime again.

I have 3 accounts, because, believe it or not, there is plenty more to do other than playing the same 16 yr old ctf map.

    Have main account, WOW1
    Have vet account, WOW2

Make twinks on WOW1, transfer to WOW2 when built.

Setting it up takes time because it wont let you xfer a toon to an account thats *never* had game time. So, in detail, it goes like this.

    1. Create and sub "main account" have fun, play like a normal person with levels 60s and AH toons and level 24 farmers, etc. Build twinks here.
    2. Create and sub vet account on same Bnet. Probably need to actually let this one wind down the whole month just to make sure vet status is cemented. Create "guild anchor" toon and have this toon invited to your guild.
    3. When sub on vet account ends, xfer your twinks to vet account (with all the usual caveats. XP turned on, no BOA gear, no outstanding mail, etc)
    4. reinvite twinks to guild.

Once this is all done, you'll be able to create and build new twinks on a subbed account and then just transfer them to an unsubbed account when youre done for immediate pewpew time.

Edit: Since you already have the vet account winding down and your toon on that account already in your guild, you would just need to create a new account on that same bnet that you'd like to keep subbed. The above explanation was just a sort of "starting from scratch" guide.

I have 8 from doing this (nerfed to oblivion now tho). $15 for 30 days of 300% xp boost? Was a no-brainer...

Plus the rewards for resubbing another month or 2, was a super way to altoholic crap expansions and multiple brackets.

really appreciate all the useful info provided here by everyone, thanks a lot.

Just tried to transfer my toon to wow1, as chop warned, it says "account is locked or on trial".

I guess I need to sub a month on wow1, what's the cheapest way to do it?

what i am thinking is, buy wow token with gold, transfer wow token to blizzard balance (22 CAD)

then sub for a month on wow1 using blizzard balance (19 CAD)

the beauty of this approach is that, I can pvp for about 27 days on my vet account after it expires (while playing the AH during that time on my wow1 account), then when there is 3 days left on my wow1 account, i can transfer my paladin over, during the 3 days of having game time, I make planned changes that I have accumulated over 27 days of pvp.

Then after that, I change my vet account to the paying account.

    is there a better way?

You can just use the token for gametime on that account if it's on the same Bnet account. Check that first.

All of the 8 accounts I mentioned always prompted me to use the tokens I had purchased on my subbed account to resub those secondary accounts... that's why it was no biggie to run 3 extra toons through BC trying to speed the process.

edit- buy a token with gold and then log into the wow1 account, it should give you the option to use the token there.

I actually just used my last one a week ago or I'd give you a screenshot how it looks.

In order for the transfer to work, both accounts should not have SL (or, alternatively, both should have it), correct? Because then it doesn't work in the most general case: main account with SL, twink account without.

    ---
On topic, if transferring characters from the main account does indeed require that both accounts don't have SL (or both have it), I was planning to roll with three accounts:

1 - main, SL, subbed, playing level 60s
2 - twink, no SL, unsubbed, playing level 20s
3 - twink, no SL, subbed, gearing new level 20s

...then alternating between letting accounts 2 and 3 expire their sub. This way I always can play on level 20s and always can gear some new level 20s with mail / whatever from main as well.

But if transferring characters from account 1 to account 2 above is possible, I guess I won't need account 3.

Careful with the timing, btw, transferring a character can take multiple days. It normally doesn't, but sometimes it does. If you want three days after the transfer, I'd start transferring three more days earlier than that.

The new RAF isn't terrible either. Every third month on a new account is free because it gives you one month on your main account. You also get a very useful teleport spell to teleport characters once every 30 min, I used it all the time when boosting my twinks on my main.

Its possible things have changed but I spent all BFA transferring toons on and off a subbed account with BFA/SL pre-purchase and an unsubbed account without BFA.

The rewards and summoning were nice but not the main draw, 300% xp was crazy then... now with leveling being so simple I could see the benefit of using it again, but also the lack of need. You could get the free gametime before too.

    Hey!
As far as I know, you should buy Sl, if you want to transfer 50-60lvl character.
But if you want to transfer any other lvl - you don't need to upgrade it to shadowlands :)

A lot of it was mounts that arent available anymore, I think usually after 2-3 months? Now the RaF has to sub for a year for you to get everything they offer... not griping at them for once tho, it's supposed to be a recruitment not a self-boost. ;)

Other than the XP and the summon, all I really cared about was the flying 2-seater mounts... still use them sooooo much.

so let me get this correct, you can buy token for 25CAD (sorry i am canadian), then convert token into ~130k gold, then play the AH with 130k gold, then buy back the token when you are ready, then transfer said token into blizzard balance as 22CAD (a net loss of 3CAD)

so if you do this 4 times, you get 88 blizzard balance, which you can use, with 10CAD to purchase a 6-month sub (98 CAD) on your second account to get the lucky yun mount.

    you end up spending 25*4+10=110CAD

    But you:

get access to 520k gold, and can keep whatever earnings you make. (if you make (25-22)/25=12% i.e., 62k gold with the 520k you get, then you break-even. if you make any more gold, then it is a net gain.)

get all the recruit-a-friend rewards on your main account (for the 6-month sub on the alt account)

let me know if i missed something material (token appreciation over a short period of time is not material, for example), this seems almost too good to be true?

Gold value fluxuates, so there's no guarantee you'll be able buy a token next month for what you can now.

Not sure, but likely no guarantee the mount will still be available by the time you get around to buying the 6-month sub.

You can always just buy the 6 months straight up and not worry about the tokens, does that give you all the RaF too? Like right away? Save yourself 12 bucks (CAD) and all you lose is the "access" to the gold that may be worth less later.

Gold could be worth more later too, hard to predict. You might make out better your way if token prices go down... I feel like token prices just go up and up as the expansions go on cuz there's more gold coming in and less to use it on.

Seems like a tricky situation, but I dont even mess with the AH anymore so I dont know.... just that if it's going to cost about the same either way, I personally just get what I want now instead of hoping i can still do it later. ;)

You also have to know you really want to be playing in 6 months too... it's an investment of your future as well.
