Quel'Thalas

Why would I have done that when my school offered German instead?
Hispanics in the US being the most populated race after the white people isn't big reason enough for you? Unless you live, travel or have a job that requires you to speak German, i don't see the point of not giving Spanish enough importance, i recall in the 80's and 90's most of any warning, instructions, owner's manual, etc. was written in English- French, now Spanish has replaced French, that should give you an idea on how speaking Spanish is that important "in the US", unless you live in Europe, or another country that is not the US, learning Spanish is not that important.

I think it's a little ridiculous to expect everyone to speak English and to not be willing to learn any other language. Especially considering the fact that you cannot alter anyone else's ability to communicate, you can only alter yourself. Ppl can either learn enough Spanish/portuguese/whatever to communicate in a bg, or ppl can whine about being unable to communicate. Out of those 2 options, complaining on an English language forum is the least likely to achieve results.

The idea that English is the predominant language has made English speakers very small minded in matters of communication with other languages. It's not a matter of "someone else should accomodate to suit me" it's a matter of everyone making their best effort to achieve communication in a bg. If that means copying a few phrases from google translate to a macro, then so be it.

Or we could all just talk about how those ppl should have studied English.

I once had someone in a BG (it was AB) offer to translate what the Spanish speaking players were saying to the rest of the group. While his efforts were of course meant to be helpful, he spent a notable amount of time retyping what 3 players were talking about and by the time he finished retyping it, anything of relevance was no longer of use.

I do not see asking everyone to communicate effectively as being "small minded." Practically speaking, your google translator idea... alt+tabing back and forth between wow and the google translator to understand 1 player while taking fire in the field... ridiculous is an understatement.

As for people not having an opportunity to study English, in an under-privileged country that is understandable. However what you suggest here is that the majority should accommodate a very small minority (as far as wow goes).

1. I didn't suggest you have one person translate everything. Everything is not necessary. "Inc, ramp, tun".... that's pretty much as necessary as it gets in a bg. You don't need to translate the small talk on what they had for dinner ect.

2. It's not small minded to expect communication to be facilitated, it IS small minded to expect everyone else to do all the facilitating (especially when the only vector you have control of is yourself).

3. You're right, alt tabbing back and forth to google translator to understand one player is ridiculous. Good thing I never suggested that. I suggested copying some common use phrases to a **macro** which you could then use in bgs if you needed to, probably in a bg where half your team was spanish speaking. You can also use emotes as someone else suggested, since they're translated into the client language someone uses whatever that may be. If you're not willing to have one or two macros for special situations or use emotes then its a wonder you expect people to learn English.

My advice was some things YOU can do to improve the situation when it comes up, because like it or not you CANNOT make people learn English. Working around the problem as best you can is your only option. Feel free to ignore the advice of course but there it is.

But my school offered German, why take Spanish?

Oh look, it's another "Help my hunter isn't overpowered and I can't roll my face across my keyboard and win matches" thread.

Just kick all the quel thalas scrubs by reporting them afk. tell your whole team to do it. The quel thalas scrubs wont know ssince they cant speak english. This goes for all non english speaking servers that are scrubs not just quel thalas.

I do not think that is exactly what Kearbear meant by a work around lol.

Seriously though, you would think "Inc BS 5" is simple and universal... apparently it isn't though. Then again it is also possible the particular group of Spanish players I am recalling happened to be douche bags.

The Spanish-only speaking players are the minority here, and should they not wish to burden the rest of the group, it would be wise on their part to pick up some of the simple phrases you yourself suggested previously... which apparently they ether will not, or cannot from what I have seen.
As I see it, your advise, even should *I* gain some understanding of Spanish, how is EVERYONE else in the group to do so? It makes more sense to ask a small group of players to get with the times if they wish to play with the rest of us effectively.

I understand that may seem harsh... I took Latin in high school (was the only honor language offered), so I do know what it's like to learn a strange language. But the reality here is that it would be of great help to everyone, themselves included, to get with the program... Otherwise people will start taking cues from others like noscrubs.
