Professions for F2P level 20

I stopped playing WoW the first time after about a month in Pandaria having played from launch. I am enjoying playing again and really love that I can F2P and get 90% of the content in terms of questing, exploring and running 5-person instances. However, the professions have me baffled. I am currently running Mining / Gemcrafting but all my gems are getting reduced to +1 amounts even if they deliver more. Sure, I am slotting them into iLevel 79/84/89/96 gear but they are all reduced to +1 traits. I am only in Northrends so far having played through Eastern Kingdoms, Kalimidor and Outlands so far but I am wondering if it even worth it to try to continue working on Jewelcrafting if they will not deliver any more benefit than the purchasable gems in Thallamar. Thoughts?

There's three elements to JCing: Movement Speed, Stats, and 3 socket necklace.

For the Movement Speed you need Shadowlands JCing and ~500 SL ore. (If you only care about the speed ~50 ore)

AGI and INT PvP gems will give you +4, but requires you get Marks of Honor, which means farming honor (with your preferred method) or waiting for the Anniversary event which opens up Alterac Valley event which rewards Marks of Honor. If you want STR gems I'd personally recommend going with Northrend Jewelcrafting, as you'll be able to get +3 STR gems from it easily; the downside is that you have to keep JCing as a profession to have them useable. Otherwise the PvP gems will give you +2 STR and +2 armor, which isn't terrible, but not that great either. Basically JCing for stats is really only for STR classes.

Last one is the 3 socket necklace, which requires Dragonflight JC and ~1000 DF ore. You also need a DF necklace from a rare mob, most go for https://www.wowhead.com/item=200210/amnesia

Did you intend to send me to the Fishlocked video? I am not positive how that relates to my question.
lol my bad. those background-at-work vids got me again

but people got you sorted with the 20s guide. Its got a lot of good info. Read it. But also yea, watch the fishlocked guy. Its a stupid idea and stupid ideas are fun!

welcome aboard. only certain gems work. read this. and then read it again. It'll save you many headaches
As someone who couldn't give too much of a shit about professions, especially when Northrend Inscription/Enchanting and DF Jewelcrafting/Mining made me lose too much hair follicles, Fishlocked has sparked my interest. A nice calm and chill profession that doesnt want you to cause warcrimes.
