Oldtimers Life Update Thread

What a neat idea for a thread!

I haven't played WoW in several years, but I still play Hearthstone when I have the time. I look back on my time on WoW with a mixture of fondness and sadness.

I'm currently a busy mom and busy in my career. I've quite enjoyed working from home during the pandemic and am sad about having to return to the office soon.

I've gained some new hobbies during the pandemic. One is fostering cats and the other is a houseplant collection. I've also been getting to know some new family members ( thanks 23andme :p ).

I hope everyone is doing well. I would love to hear from my old twink buds and what everyone is up to now!

23andme is fun.

What kind of plants? I always wanted to get into that. Surprisingly enough, I only briefly played Hearthstone. Despite that, I played a large amount of MTG in the 90s and early to mid 2000s, as well as even more Yugioh in the early 2000s and Pokemon.

I can’t believe that this year, 2022 I would have played WoW for 12 years, having started in 2010.

Not a lot has changed for me, I have a wife and kids and have been working as an engineer for quite a while now. The last 2 years have been the busiest of my life work wise. I would have expected things to slow down with a pandemic but it hasn’t, and this years is looking like it’ll be busier.

I made a decision at the start to 2020 to drop to a 4 day work week, so I could give back, volunteer and also counsel people. It hasn’t helped finance wise, but we are still getting by, but I have noticed the need for a lot of people is great. People get affected in different ways with the restrictions and stuff, and some peoples head gets in a bad place. So I’m trying to do a little good as I get older and wiser.

WoW is still something I enjoy. Been on 20’s now since 2015, and it’s still keeping me entertained. For me it’s a great escape from reality - not that my life is bad or anything, I just enjoy that hour or 2 in Azeroth most nights, and also the community of 20’s. :ez:

What sort of engineering? o.o

Civil.
Roads, drains, sewers and all that. ;)

Whenever I see civil engineer this personal experience/meme of mine pops into my head.

Someone asked why I run minor speed on boots, and I said it's because it stacks with the speed on cloak.
He kept disputing that it didn't so I told him that we can do a test. Long distance running, just in a straight line for a long enough period of time so that any possible flaw of "you pressed auto run faster than me" could be eliminated, and so that it would be obvious visually when I pull way further ahead.

After the test, the dude still denied it, even though I was clearly faster. He ended the argument in "I'm a civil engineer", to which I reply, "I don't hope you ever get to build bridges". Good times, good times.

Hahaha, I can assure you we aren't all d!cks ;)
Makes me laugh though, not sure what his profession had to do with the speed test - lol :p

Awesome!

I used to be really interested in either doing that or architecture, before diving into the whole med school path thing.

Course, I've since completely given up on humanity and been stripped of empathy for my countrymen, and decided to just go with engineering myself. Go go EECS.

engineering, def the best job for a misanthrop
blow up a bridge, ez mass casualties COPIUM

Hey, not sure whether this will gain any traction, but will give it a try. I interacted with a bunch of people in the WoW twinking community for some years, many of whom became good (online) friends, and have subsequently lost contact with pretty much all of them. I'm curious about where everyone is in life post-WoW (or even if still playing), so if you see this thread, it would be cool to see what you have been up to, whether I knew you or not.

I'll go first. I still live in China after seven years, have a pretty successful English-teaching business that I run with my wife, and have two young children. I don't play WoW or any other online games, and my main hobby is riding my bicycle. I don't regret my WoW addiction very much, and look back on those times fondly, but life is definitely more rewarding now.

Memories below of some very good players, i always say i wish twinking could be done one more time. I still somewhat maintain my toon.

i already had a side business going when i returned to WoW in Q1 2021, in addition to working full time as an actuary.

making gold in WoW successfully in Q1~Q2 2021 really gave me a lot of insight in terms of scaling my computer business up by getting others to work for me (in the WoW universe, that would be establishing trust and friendship with "Spanish speaking full time gold farmers"). the change from "let me do everything on my own" to "let me find the right people to work for me" gave my business a huge boost. In terms of branching out, the % of "return" in real life isn't nearly as high though, unlike in WoW, almost 100% of them are completely loyal once they know you have millions of liquid capital. In real life, maybe 1 out of 10 people that I invest in turn out to be a successful sub seller.

I think the most important thing i learnt with all of this is that: maintaining a good relationship with your business and other counterparties will give your business organic growth, for me, these counterparties include: my suppliers (a list that is growing rapidly), my sub-sellers, my landlord (i pay about $4k rent each month for storage), my contacts at various advertising platforms (i spend about $2k a month on ads), subject matter experts (for example, paid programmers that code for me), my girlfriend (3 meals a day, and help me release all my sexual tension), and so on.

of course, business has ups and downs, i still suffer from risky business decisions sometimes but overall it has been growing exponentially. biggest loss was around $3k, i had to reject a 20k shipment that was in shambles (did not want to go through Fedex and insurance), basically forfeiting all the import charges, money spent on getting ready for the shipment, and FX losses. i also tried my hands on flipping items like babywipes, kn95 masks and cellphones & accessories, and more or less failed with most of these.

when i am freed up a bit, i still plan to make a video to explain "how to do much better than mediocre in real life", it's actually not complicated: being able to work hard (80%) and having some vision (18%) is 98% of it.

that coming from some1 whos managed to consistently perfom subpar, why that'd be quite the amusement to watch :PepeComfy:

I stopped twinking during legion but played endgame stuff the last three expansion, i had a crippling depression issues during first lockdown cause my job become very difficult and i was struggling to do even things i loved to.
Right now i work as a Bartender and i try slowly to return at my old hobbies.
