Well, it's more that ret is no longer viable. I did a few BGs, and actually had some fun. Heals can't DPS anymore. Some of the matches were enjoyable. What I did notice though, was that even the most junk geared prot noobs were out DPSing me. Not damage, I mean DPS. As ret I was averaging ~50 DPS in BGs. ~125 in dungeons. As prot I average ~100 DPS in BGs and 250+ in dungeons. I also had BiS prot gear. Never went holy, in part because of the gear, but mostly because I thought it was ridiculous, and expected the inevitable Nerf HS got.

BGs aren't perfect. Heals are still too high. 24 huntards put on a dress and became shadow priests. Too many rogues for my liking, and too many healers, but despite all that, I had a few fun games, so it is at least improving. Almost no GY farming. Infact, I've noticed it's actually difficult to 3 cap in many games. Quite a few end 1-0 or 1-1. Far fewer HKs and KBs, probably half or less. I notice I am making a bigger dent on the KB percentage of HKs now that I don't have so many huntards kill stealing and just ruining the game generally. I also manage to get through a BG without conc shot as a pemanent debuff.

I still enjoyed ret more in Cat, and would still play it now if the DPS spec actually managed to out DPS the tank spec, I also still think ret was better than prot, not that it means anything now.

That's actually the only thing that ret is superior to prot on right now. Ret gets bonus healing, and prot heals are just plain bad. That, and both specs need more mana, I think 100 mana to chest would improve things there. 5 mana for ally and 20 for horde probably aren't enough to make an impact.

I tried Ret on my old Paladin, and I... I couldn't beat a Destro lock /cry

But then again the destro was geared, and he and his pet hit me hard, I went oom in about 5 seconds from trying to keep myself up. I was amused, irritated, and feeling alot a respect for that Warlock. They have come a long way.

I have no issues with off healing. I regularly put up 15-20k a BG, even if half of it is on myself. Sure you go oom in 3 casts, but you LoS to get out of combat and you regen to full in 3 seconds. 6% mana per 5 seconds in combat is still quite good, and if you actually know how to manage mana while healing, it really isn't an issue.
