Taylondor's F2P Ret Guide

First of all i thank you all for reading through this thread and i hope you will all appreciate it

Introduction:

As you all know, ret used to be really fun to play back in Cataclysm but at the beginning of MoP ret became a underpowered specialisation and it was rare to see anyone play it but at the release of patch 5.3 ret got buffed a little and now is again a fun spec to play again. Hope this guide will be useful for those who want to try out ret and for those who really want to be ret!

Race:

Alliance
  1. Humans: Humans are like the most reliable and best class to choose as pally if you want to play on alliance. Their Free Racial Trinket give u a free trinket slot thus you can get 2 AGM as ret have low hp. Possibly best race to chose to be ret on alliance. The mace and sword expertise also helps a lot as Ret
  1. Draenei : They are also good race to choose because of their Extra Hit Rating and their HoT and as ret dosen't have much damage reduction as protc they are easily killed and this HoT can be really useful either in PvP or PvE.
  1. Dwarves: Dwarves have a really useful racial for combat against rogues as it removes poisons, bleeding effects and reduce damage taken. Dwarves have also mace expertise but as ret, 2H swords are better and its practically not recommended to reroll dwarves
Horde
  1. Blood Elf: Blood elf have a good racial Arcane Torrent which is and AoE silence and also restore the user mana. This is surely a good racial when you are running low in mana or to prevent casting from an enemy healer, best race to choose as ret on horde imo
  1. Tauren: Taurens have an AoE Stun which is really reliable on when when it comes to stop casting or to gain some distance from a player in PvP. Their advantage is that they have a Small Boost of hp which is really good when it comes for you to be ret as the hp as being ret will be low before any BoA
Abilities

Crusader Strike: Grant a charge of holy when it is used on enemy and dmg depends on the weapon you are using.Apply Weakened Blows to the target

Hammer of the Righteous: An AoE of effect which apply debuff Weakened Blows on everyone in its range and generate 1 holy power. Try to keep debuff activate when soloing someone. Share a global cool down with Crusader Strike

Judgment: A seal which does damage at the at long range.Useful against long range Dps

Divine Shield: Protect you from all damage for 8 seconds and reduce damage done by 50%. Try not to use TV when its active, cause Forbearance for 1 min. A 5 min cooldown spell
LionNomNom.gif

Templar's Verdict : The main burst for ret and only useable with 3 holy powers

Flash of Light : Main healing method for paladins. Its a fast and really expensive cost of mana. Try to not use them too often, just in case of

Word of Glory: An instant heal which consumes holy power to heal the user's himself or its target. The more holy power the more the healing will increase

Cleanse: Cleanse is really useful to escape from rogues poisons and to kit them

Hammer of Justice: A spell that stuns the target for 6 sec and any damage cause won't break the effect. Very helpful against healers.

Lay on Hands: An instant burst of healing which heal the user or its target for the total amount of health the user have. Its a 10 min cooldown spell.....need to use only in case of emergency

Righteous Fury: Grant additional threat to mobs. Useful while tanking in PvE

Reckoning: Taunt a mob or hunter pet to attack you. Can use it to keep hunter pet away from healers or preventing rogues from going back into stealth

Seal of Command: Does a small amount of damage when we hit an enemy. Enable the use of Judgment

Talents
1- Speed of Light: A spell which increase movement speed by 70% for 8 sec. Useful while chasing hunters and range casters. Has a 45 sec cooldown

2- Long Arm of the Law: A small boost of speed for 3 sec and probabbly the best talent u should have as ret,as you will always have to use Judgement. Very useful while kitting and gaining distance between players

3- Pursuit of Justice: A permanent boost of 15% speed at all time. Might be the least reliable talent as ret since u will have to use all your holy power in TV

Re: F2P Ret Guide

I've done a few chardev just to help you guys gearing up once you started playing ret pally

Alliance Dps Ret : This is a set for full dps and critc set while being on alliance. You can have higher chance of crit in this set.

Alliance Stam Ret : This set is for higher survivability. When going 1 vs 1 against holy paladins try using stam set instead of critc set, because everyone know that denounce makes us incapable of doing critic strike and thus we will be at a disadvantage. Also good survivability vs rogues as Hp will increase a lot.

Horde Dps ret : The set which every horde paladins should have with then in oder to do awesome burst of damage. Either you are playing blood elf or tauren, this set is sure goona help you out in dps

Pre BoA (A) : This is the gear you will have to use before getting any BoA or AGM. You will also need to do some profession to improve the gear

Pre Boa (H). The gear you will need to use as a horde paladin.

Profession

I'll suggest you to start with Enchanting because while lvling you will come across many items which you won't need and thus you can disenchant and use them to enchant your gear. Do not forget to make more than one enchant item and place them in Enchanting Vellum so that you can use them after you have drop the profession.

Enchant on gear:

Chest:
Meduim Armor Kit
+15 health
+20 mana (H)

Back:
+10 armor

Wrist:
+1 strength ( World Drop )
+1 stamina

Hand:
Meduim Armor Kit

Leg:
Meduim Armor Kit

Feet:
Meduim Armor Kit

Weapon:
+2 weapon damage

The 2nd profession should be Leather working and Skinning. Level up your profession skill and make more than 3 Meduim Armor Kit so that you can use them of the future Bis Gear. Also gives critical strike

The 3rd profession should be Mining and Jewelcrafting. Collect the needed reagents for making the necklace and the small boost of 30 hp from mining should help in Bg's

The final and last profession you can have is Herbalism and Alchemy. Alchemy have really useful items to get, like Swiftness Potion , Holy protection Potion , Elixir Of Giant Growth and many more. You can also get Lifeblood which grant 15 haste and heal you for a small hp.

Re: F2P Ret Guide

None of pallies listed are BiS. :p

Re: F2P Ret Guide

Good start! Looking forward to how it looks when completed. :)

I will go over it in more detail later, a few tips to change:

Run it through spellcheck! Lots of tiny easily fixed mistakes. Things to look out for:
Properly use you - none of that u stuff please!
Spaces after punctuation
Proper capitalization
Draenei instead of Draenai
Dwarves instead of Dwarfs
Gear instead of Gears

Consider adding gear sets! You could talk about why a certain combination would be useful, what stats you prioritized while maintaining hit cap, and people won't mistakenly end up with a weird mix and match. ^^
Missing BoA weapons in the current gear list.
Mention professions / enchants.

Consider adding some more information on your play style with your personal experiences and tips! Good job already in the spell descriptions.

Change armory heading to just Examples of Retribution Paladins.

Re: F2P Ret Guide

Strength was nice back in 5.2 when your main form of damage was from judgement. But with the recent buffs to ret's all around dmg, crit is also a very nice stat to have.
I'd consider a proper hybrid to be BiS. Snacks @ Aerie Peak - Community - World of Warcraft replace one wedding band with DPR and replace gorewalkers with cobrahn's boots.
Make sure you have sufficient hit for BGs!(15)

Re: F2P Ret Guide

Nice job tay, great start for a first guide.

Im thinking of doing an enh shaman guide but im kinda bad with wording everything exactly how I picture it... meh might do it later

Anyways, gratz!

"2h swords are better" - you list only axes as weapons. I am a bit confused.

EDIT: I've thought always that dwarves have axe spec o_O now it doesnt change anything, probably just misswrite

Re: F2P Ret Guide

Nice work. Some stuff could use a little cleaning up (much of which Yde covered) but it's a solid start for a guide.

I do have a few suggestions for the gear section in particular:

One thing I noticed is you have Sentinel's Medallion / Scout's Medallion in the gear list and some of the Chardevs. Apparently agility no longer gives crit or dodge for paladins (making it essentially useless), so the only useful stats those necks provide is the 2 stamina. You'd always be better of with the Thick Bronze Necklace (scales to 4 stam) if you're building for durability, or Brilliant Necklace if you're going for damage.

Also, some of your Chardevs aren't hit-capped. You might consider adding pieces like Demon Band or Dread Pirate Ring to the mix to help with that. Horde players will want to consider using Flying Tiger Goggles until they can get the Lucky Fishing Hat; that might also be worth a mention in your list.

Additionally, Miner's Cape scales up to 5 strength and 5 crit, making it the best pure damage cloak available if one doesn't mind the loss of stamina.

Hope this helps, keep up the good work!

Re: F2P Ret Guide

Nice Guide, I would add that Thorbia´s Gauntlets scale better in BG than the other gloves, also I would go with Gloves of the Hero for a holy/crit set rather than the boots.

Here is my pala, its mainly Holy though, Kíri @ Aggramar - Community - World of Warcraft

With the gear scaling its gonna be melee hit capped vs 20s in bgs :)

Re: F2P Ret Guide

Liking the guide, when will it be finished?

Do you mind adding some game - play tips?
