Let's talk PvP racials.

here's my (highly subjective take)... a little disclaimer that human's perception seem a lot better on beta compared to private servers but in this post I'll ignore that fact and assume it's pretty ass since I haven't experienced the beta-perception myself. btw this is based off pvp and not pve.

Ally
Hunter
nelf > dwarf
Mage
gnome > human
Paladin
dwarf > human
Priest
dwarf > human > nelf
Rogue
gnome = dwarf > human > nelf
Warlock
gnome > human
Warrior
gnome > dwarf > human > nelf

Horde
Hunter
orc > tauren > troll
Mage
UD = troll
Shaman
orc > tauren > troll
Priest
troll > UD
Rogue
orc > UD > troll
Warlock
orc > UD
Warrior
tauren > orc > UD > troll

Basically what dramatized said, if you play alliance and your class can be a gnome, play gnome. Having a snare / root breaker on a 1min cd is amazing in a game where so many random slows and roots can happen.

And for horde orc is busted since 25% chance to resist stuns is huge baring in mind every race has 10% stun resist baseline, but i would definetely play an undead rogue over orc because having WotF means you can wear a different trinket over your pvp trinket vs warlocks, priests and warriors. Another thing to note is magic dust will be instant cast in classic which you can use WotF to break also.

Dramatized left out night elves for ally warriors which I would rank = to gnome due to shadowmeld/charge. I also personally think Taurens are pretty OP with their stomp and for that I'd rank them as the best Shaman. Lastly, for horde hunters I'm actually pretty torn and could see orc = tauren = troll just depending on the situation. Otherwise I agree with most of what @Dramatized said if we're strictly speaking PvP.

@Jrugs You seem to be unaware that the classic version of shadowmeld cannot be used in combat. It is not the amazing Vanish without movement that it was in some later expansions, and thus will not drop combat and allow charging.

When I learned this not too long ago I had to change my plans from NE Rogue to Gnome Rogue as well ; ) Side effect of primarily twinking during BC and Wrath.

Shoot you're 100% right.

Oh yes missed nelf for warr.

I don't think you can even compare shadowmeld -> charge to escape artist. Maybe in a duel setting but for BGs, and especially premades, you'll have a much bigger use of 1 min cd EA than getting a "free" charge. For wpvp I'm not sure, maybe shadowmeld -> charge would be superior there, don't have enough exp or knowledge. Hunter can exploit shadowmeld much more than warrs can, that's why I prefer nelf hunter over dwarf.

I can see a case being made for why tauren > orc or at least tauren = orc. Obviously tauren has a "controlled" racical in a way orc doesn't, but IMO the stun resist is too broken to turn down but I can see why tauren is superior for some matchups. As tauren you will have an extremely tough time vs an equally geared and skilled rogue since you probably won't even get to utilize warstomp because you will find yourself stunlocked into blind into stunlock into death. As orc you at least have a (though admittedly RNG) chance to win that matchup.

I would too rank orc = tauren for hunter if it wasn't that I found out that the melee hitbox (for you to hit others and others to hit you) is huge on the beta for taurens compared to private servers. This is because one of tauren's racials is to have longer melee range compared to other races. This is counterproductive for hunters because of the deadzone. If it wasn't for the extra melee range I too would put orc = tauren.

Some people have a much larger opinion of warstomp than it deserves, remember it stuns you (cast timer) almost as long as it stuns them, OK not nearly as long but still it has a cast timer and that really hinders it.

And lets not forget the Gnome engineering bonus for goblin rocket helmet

wdym gnomes are the better looking race out of all alliance races imo
Of the classic alliance races Dwarf or nothing on looks. Especially casters, them braids swirling cannot be beat.

Gnome is bis for war :)

And then you realize what a gnome death animation looks like.

The goodies are totally awesome, but at the same time, you are a gnome A FREAKING GNOME, with a hilarious death animation.

shadowmeld was not a full vanish and not a full blown stealth in Van WOW. and if you were dotted, poisoned, bleeds, etc, you instantly came right out. if you went into a flag room in WSG and there was a NE SM'd, if you looked carefully you could see them. SM was not a candy racial like it is now.

in CATA there was QQ on SM being a vanish, blizz nerfed it, somewhere after MOP blizz stealth buffed it mostly back

I think people are going to be SHOCKED and dismayed at how much CC there is/was in PvP Vanilla. It was horrible to say the least.

Gnomes have a smaller hit box when compared to a Tauren.
