Klaqfang's Alliance Prot Warrior Shield Slam Spec Guide
Patch 5.4.8
Updated 7/26/2014
Introduction:
I love playing a Prot Warrior and Shield Slamming people in the face. Nothing is better than seeing a big crit and your opponent disappear. I made this guide because I don't see many Prot Warriors on the field of battle. At least not many compared to Prot Paladins, Hunters, Druids and Rogues.
A decently geared prot warrior can still have a lot of fun with Shield Slam when properly geared. Give it a try.
Note, this guide is meant to be just that. A guide. I'm no expert of game mechanics or WoW PVP.
Race:
In my opinion the top three warrior races are Human, Worgen and Draenei. The rest are in no particular order.
Human:
Every Man For Himself is a Human racial spell that acts as a trinket. It will remove all movement impairing effects and all effects which cause loss of control of your character. This allows you an open trinket slot for Arena Grandmaster (+13 Stamina) or Rune of Duty (+5 Stamina).
With Diplomacy you get a 10% reputation bonus, makes getting the bags a little faster.
You get a 1% (+3 points) expertise bonus with Swords and Maces.
Worgen:
You get a 1% (+3 points) Crit Bonus which is nice.
You also get Dark Flight, a sprint that increases your movement speed by 40% for 10 seconds, which is a useful anti-kiting ability to have.
The Shadow and Nature damage you take is reduced by 1%.
You get a free mount thanks to Running Wild.
Draenei:
You get a 1% (+3 points) Chance To Hit Bonus. Which means you do not have to use the Bravo Company Signet. You can equip a ring with better Strength and Stamina instead.
You also get a heal over time racial spell called Gift of the Naaru. This is usefulf or warriors as we don't have any self healing abilities except Victory Rush.
The Shadow damage you take is reduced by 1%.
Night Elf:
You get Shadowmeld, a stationary cloaking ability that also drops threat on you.
You also get a 2% (+6 points) chance to dodge any melee attacks.
The Nature damage you take is reduced by 1%.
Dwarf:
Your Stoneform ability removes all poison, disease and bleed effects and reduces all damage taken by 10% for 8 sec.
Expertise with Maces increased by 1% (+3 points).
The Frost damage you take is reduced by 1%.
You find more archaeological items at sites and you survey faster.
Gnome:
Escape Artist racial allows you to escape the effects of any immobilization or movement speed reduction effect. A poor man's Every Man For Himself really.
Your racial bonus of +15 to Engineering allows you to make Large Copper Bombs that deal 43-57 Fire damage and have a 2 second stun.
Expertise with daggers and one-handed swords is increased by 1% (+3 points).
The Arcane damage you take is reduced by 1%.
Pandaren
You get a martial arts move called Quaking Palm that strikes the target and incapacitates them for 4 sec, and turns off your attack.
You take less damage from falling.
You get double the benefit of the Well Fed Buff. Hence the +6 Stamina normally gain from eating Seasoned Wolf Kabob, Crispy Lizard Tail, Redridge Goulash, Murloc Fin Soup will be +12 Stamina.
Your cooking skill is increased by 15.
You get double rested experience.
Useful Abilities:
Defensive Stance: Stay in this, no stance dancing.
Active Abilities -
Shield Slam - This is your nuke move. You can use this every 8 seconds. You can get get some very high crits. So powerful that Shield Slam almost becomes Vanish, because a person is there one second and gone the next.
Heroic Strike - This deals 110% weapon damage + 30 (in Battlegrounds). Use this when you have the rage. A good immediate follow up to Shield Slam.
Charge - Charges your opponent and stuns them in place for 1.5 seconds and generates 20 rage.
Thunderclap - No rage required and is an AOE attack. Good for defending a flag in Arathi Basin or finishing off an opponent with low health.
Execute - Proc's when your opponent's health is low, if you have the rage for this use it to finish them off.
Victory Rush - After a killing blow on an opponent this move procs. If you attack another opponent with this move it will heal you.
Shield Block - I rarely have enough rage to use this, but it increases your block chance against melee attacks for 6 seconds.
Throw - This is useful for when your opponent has just a sliver of health left and tries to run away and you don't have a Charge ready yet.
Passive Abilities -
Enrage - Your Shield Slam and Heroic Strike critical strikes will proc this. Your critical blocks will proc this as well. This will increase your physical damage output by 10% for 6 seconds and generate 10 rage. This is why you can't ignore crit, as the more you crit the more this will proc.
Parry - Gives you a chance to parry enemy attacks.
Unwavering Sentinel - This is awesome. It increases your total Stamina by 15%. Reduces the chance you will be critically hit by melee attacks by 6%. Increases your armor value from items by 25%. Reduces the Rage cost of Thunder Clap by 100%.
Talents:
At Level 15 you can choose between these three talents:
Juggernaut - You can charge every 12 seconds instead of every 20 seconds.
Double Time - You can charge twice in a row. I use this, easier to stay on people.
Warbringer - Your charge also knocks the target to the ground stunning it for 3 seconds and reduces the enemy's movement speed by 50% for 15 seconds.
Professions:
Primary Professions Cycles -
Make sure you have enough bag space. Get your tabards to wear into dungeons so you can get revered with each city and buy their 16 slot bag.
Cycle 1 : Mining/Blacksmithing -
Skill up until you have a lot of Rough Sharpening Stones and Coarse Sharpening Stones saved up. These increase your weapon damage by +2 and +3 respectively for one hour. You should have a lot of stones to make these from. Get a good bit before you drop Blacksmithing for Jewelcrafting.
-Keep Mining, but drop Blacksmithing-
Cycle 2: Mining/Jewelcrafting -
Use this time to make the following items: Thick Bronze Necklace and Brilliant Necklace.
-Drop Both Mining and Jewelcrafting-
-Pickup Skinning and Leatherworking-
Cycle 3: Skinning/Leatherworking -
Keep going until you can make a ton of Medium Armor Kit. You can use Medium Armor Kit's on your legs, boots and hands. I would say to make a few stacks of them. Warlords of Draenor is around the corner, stockpiling a bit is not a bad idea.
-Drop Skinning and Leatherworking-
-Pickup Enchanting and Herbalism-
Cycle 4: Enchanting/Herbalism -
Get these enchants in multiples as Warlords of Draenor is around the corner, you will want spares to use on new gear.
Enchants you need:
Enchant Cloak - Minor Protection
Enchant Bracer - Minor Stamina
Enchant Chest - Lesser Health
Enchant Weapon - Minor Striking
Also get started on your Herb picking and stockpile these. You will also get a new spell, Lifeblood, a self heal that grants you +15 haste for 20 seconds. Use it.
Final Professions: Herbalism/Alchemy
So you get Lifeblood with Herbalism, that's all well and good. But where does Alchemy come in? The best part of being a Warrior Alchemist is Elixir of Giant Growth. It grants you +17 Strength in Battlegrounds. It increases your size too, not that we Warrior's need that kind of thing...
You have to farm the Elixir of Giant Growth Recipe, it is a Barrens zone drop. The best place to farm it from is off the pirates on Fray Island in Northern Barrens. You can clear the island and ship, then keep doing it over and over when they respawn. I marked the location on the map below.
Secondary Professions:
Cooking -
Skill your cooking up until you can cook the following:
Seasoned Wolf Kabob, Crispy Lizard Tail, Redridge Goulash and Murloc Fin Soup give you +6 Stamina after you eat them for 10 seconds and gain the Well Fed buff.
Fishing -
This helps with your Cooking Leveling if you cook what you catch. Other than that, nothing really beneficial here.
First Aid -
Keep going until you can make Heavy Rune Cloth Banadages. However, any bandages will be good for healing you. Warrior's don't have a self heal so this helps.
Archaeology -
This is a profession that doesn't do anything for you stat wise. I would get this up to Skill Level 75 though so you an do the quest at the Darkmoon Faire. Easy tickets or heirlooms.
Strategy:
Shield Slam is your bread and butter. It's a nuke on an 8 second cool down. When you are properly geared your Shield Slam can crit over 1K. You can finish off your opponents with Heroic Strike (seeing the macro section for a useful Shield Slam-Heroic Strike macro), Thunderclap or Execute.
Once you finish someone off, use Victory Rush for a nice heal.
Don't charge your opponent unless you have to, save them for interrupts or for a anti-kiting move so you can close back in after getting CCed.
Try to teamup with a Rogue in a battleground. You charge in and Shield Slam, then they pop out and finish them off.
Also, try teaming up with another Prot Warrior built for damage due to the double Shield Slam. Two Shield Slams in a row is usually enough to finish off someone.
And yes you are a Prot Warrior, but you still take damage, so be sure to keep an eye on where your healers are and peel for them. They often return the favor in the form of heals.
Keep an eye out in battlegrounds for the Berserker Buff, that belongs to you. You can deal out some insane Shield Slam damage with that 30% damage increase.
Gear:
I choose to stack Strength. As of right now in Mists of Panderia, 1 point of Strength is equal to 2 points of Attack Power. When you go into a Battleground at Level 20, your Strength scales up and is increased. While your crit is decreased once you enter a Battleground. You still need crit due to the Enrage passive ability, but I don't see the point of overly stacking a stat that will just diminish once you enter a battleground, when you can stack a stat that will increase. You can try experimenting with a few different pieces to see what gives you better results. If you keep bumping your Strength up your Shield Slam is going to hit harder. Hence when you do crit, you should have a bigger base to crit from.
I have put the recommended gear in a tier order.
Tier 1 is the cream of the crop that gives you what you need stat wise in order to be the most effective.
Tier 2 is a solid placeholder until you get an upgrade to the best in slot item.
Tier 3 is a good starter piece. If you enter a BG with these at Level 20 you won't be too gimped. There is nothing worse than seeing a new F2P enter a battleground in whites or have empty slots. If you go in even in this Tier 3 gear your Shield Slam will be an effective hard hitting weapon.
Here is a handy F2P Scaling Index that Lil made that shows how some of your gear will be scaled up in Battlegrounds: http://www.twinkinfo.com/forums/f43/lil-f2p-scaling-index-49230/
Head -
Tier 1: Rifle Commander's Eyepatch (This is Blizzard's gift to us Allies. A free BIS Head item that doesn't require us to go through the fishing contest.)

Tier 3: Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat (Come on, head to the Stockades and just get the Ally Eyepatch.)

Tier 2: Brilliant Necklace
Tier 3: Sentinel's Medallion

Back - Enchant with Enchant Cloak - Minor Protection
Tier 1: Tumultuous Cloak of the Soldier
Tier 2: Tumultuous Cloak of the Battle or Tumultuous Cloak of the Bear

Tier 2: Silverlaine Family Seal & Demon Band or Protector's Band & Demon Band
Tier 3: Silverlaine Family Seal & Protector's Band
Note: The Dread Pirate Ring has Stamina, Hit and Crit on it. Sure items with crit on them are nice, but the crit will be scaled down in battlegrounds. Plus if it doesn't have Strength on it then it's doing nothing to add to your top end Shield Slam damage.
Trinket Combinations (2 Slots) -
Human Only
Tier 1: Arena Grand Master & Arena Grand Master (I wish you luck)
Tier 2: Arena Grand Master & Rune of Duty or Arena Grand Master & Inherited Mark of Tyranny

Tier 2: Inherited Mark of Tyranny & Inherited Insignia of the Alliance
Tier 3: Rune of Duty & url=http://www.wowhead.com/item=18863]Insignia of the Alliance[/url]
Weapons -
Main Hand/Stat Stick - Enchant with Enchant Weapon - Minor Striking
Tier 1: Protector's Sword, Bloodsoaked Skullforge Reaver or Face Smasher
Tier 2: Broadsword of the Crown (Warrior Class Quest, so be a good warrior and save this for transmog later)
Tier 3: Mace of the Hand, Cookie's Meat Mallet, Smite's Reaver or Cookie's Tenderizer
Shield/Your True Weapon
Tier 1: Shield Against the Evil Presence , Flamescarred Draconian Defender, or Red Beard's Crest
Tier 2: Gold-Plated Buckler or Commander's Crest
Tier 3: Bear Buckler (Available from two Vendors, one easily accessible in Redridge Mountains)
Note: You can farm Skeletal Gauntlets and Foreman's Leggings from Foreman Thistlenettle. He is located near the Deadmines entrance and is a rare spawn amongst all of those other undead. He has a 6-8 minute respawn time. The other Undead can also drop the Skeletal Gauntlets, but the Foreman's Leggings only drop from him.
Just head into the cavern beneath Moonbrook and West Fall and go to the location I marked on this map.
While it is a bit of a run, once you save up 110 Honor head to Ashenvale and see The Silver Wing Sentinels Quartermaster.
You can buy a Protector's Sword, Sentinel's Medallion and Protector's Band from here. While you are there head East towards Demon Fall Canyon and the Warsong Lumbermill and start killing - Felguards, Mannoroc Lashers, Searing Infernals. So the quest item Diabolical Plans will drop. Once you get this turn it in, then you can start the quest to get your Band of Argas.
That should get you off to a good start. If you need a Shield head to Redridge Mountains and buy the Bear Buckler from the vendor there.
