Just don't play straight after your sub expires. Wait an hour or so, turn your computer on and off, then you should be fine.
It can happen if you play the moment your time expires, you log baack in and you still gain XP.
That's why it's best to reset everything and wait a bit before you play after your sub expires.

So I just spent the last week preparing a few toons for F2P 20. My resto shaman was to be my pride and joy. The account expired this evening and logged me out as my sub ran out.

I logged back in, played a single BG and leveled to 22.

What. Just. Happened.

Yeah, they're much less forgiving if it's isn't this exact bug. Be more careful in the future.
