I'm making a 20 vet, so the goggles would be nice. I'm not sure i'll be able to afford leveling engineering. How much does it usually cost you to level it to 280?

Alchemy was the real bitch for me. If you want an estimate of engineering, just check the prices of Bronze, Thorium and Mithril bars on your server. You need about 100,200,150 respectively. Most other mats (cloth, stone, low level gems) are trivially cheap. Keep in mind it is extremely easy to learn to smelt bronze and tin+copper can be very cheap.

As someone who leveled both over 15 times just on one account recently, I can say that goldthorn is your biggest issue.
Total cost overall is hard to measure since realms differ but for me who deliberately drags down markets just to buy things on realm where am the only twink - 3k ish per character both professions over time.
Don't expect it cheap to buy entire kit at once if u don't plan out or farm it yourself.
Wow token organized most markets across the board.
Best way to get wildvine is afk at one of spawn points at felwood and pick it every 6 min.

Goldthorn prices dropped significantly on my realm after the launched warfronts because people started going to arathi again.
