Finally got around to finishing up my Free Trial account for FFXIV and hit 60 + the end of the Heavensward (1st Expac). I will have to say that it is quite a different experience, coming from WoW. FF14 is definitely a game you have to take at your own pace to truly enjoy. You can rush to endgame, but with the Main Story Questline (which unlocks everything), taking up to 150-200 hours of playtime, you will likely burn out pretty quickly if you try to rush through it all.
That said, here are some of the cons of the FF14 FT experience:
And here are the positives:
Aside from that, there are also the typical chat and marketplace/marketboard restrictions found in WoW. The Free Trial community is alot smaller than WoW's for sure, but there are a still few dedicated players that write guides about the limits and what you can achieve on the Free Trial. It definitely will take a while to get used to and learn, especially if you're coming from 10+ years of WoW, but FF14 is definitely a more laid back, PVE-focused experience, and if you don't mind giving up PVP, is a viable alternative for a F2P MMO experience.
That said, here are some of the cons of the FF14 FT experience:
- No PVP - PVP for Free Trial characters was removed as of Feb 2021, due to bots and hackers.
- No "Twinking" - Everything is scaled down to your level/item level, so twinking isn't really a thing in this game.
- Heavy Focus on the Main Story - You'll have to clear the main story before you can do almost anything else.
And here are the positives:
- A More Complete "Free" experience - You have 100% access to zones and quests up to the first expansion (Heavensward). Max level is 60 as Free Trial, 80 as P2P.
- Access to Global Chat/Novice Network - You have to ask in /say chat, but as a Free player, you get access to the Global Chat in FFXIV.
- Free Server Travel (Data Center Travel(?)) - You can travel to any server in your Data Center for free. The only things server-specific are Public Player Housing and Guilds, and you don't have access to either as FT. Traveling between Data Centers is currently being planned.
- Lots of collectible mounts/emotes/transmogs and events- There's a lot of content for mount and achievement collectors. As well as large events, which offer unique rewards, meaning lots of subbed players participate as well.
- Access to interesting Dungeons and Raids - You get full access to the dungeon and raids up to the first expansion, and they all have unique/interesting mechanics.
Aside from that, there are also the typical chat and marketplace/marketboard restrictions found in WoW.
