It’s really not bad at all. You can farm elementium in twilight highlands without ever running into a high level mob, and hydrocane + swim speed mount makes obsidium in vaj super easy.
make the electro static condenser (or whatever it’s called) at skill 1 and you’ll have all the airs you need before you finish
just don’t forget to take skinning before you start, you’ll need leather for the goggles to get the vers cogs

I only see cogwheels and the cogwheel trinket in panda engi. Am I missing something?

make the trinket with panda, buy cogs from cata/vanilla vendor in capital city

they arent, they scale down as soon as you buy them. Theyre just the only ones you can use.

Everything you said is just wrong.
Let me refute it all.
It took me 10 of hours of ore farming to get to 55/75 cata engineering.
Twilight Highlands is the worst place to farm elementium. You don't pull many mobs but the ore respawn rate is terrible compared to Uldum.
Electro static condenser doesn't yield enough volatile airs. I've farmed some air elemental mobs for 1 hour just to keep it going.
Swim speed mount? Duh... I'm not vet.

The initial quest for specialization counts for all expansions. Meaning if you do gnomish initially, you can get gnomish recipes in all expansions.
Keep in mind the quest for specializations may need Heavy Leather for gnomish, much easier mats for goblin, however(I am gnomish, though).
Need somewhat higher skill to see it, however.

Very few things about F2P are fast, but you generally seem to have an aversion to just about any grind at all, so maybe this isnt for you. That said, I spent about 12-15 hours in Twilight Highlands and was done. Ymmv obviously.
you literally get them passively while mining. You gotta farm like 800 elementium. Youll get 30 airs in that without having to do anything else.
I have not one but two swim speed mounts on my pure f2p.

Also, I had 50ish Volatile Airs by the time I finished. You only need 30ish.

it also doesn't dismount when you breach water. very useful for navigating shallows.
