Came back to F2P after 14 years. (A few questions/comments)

TLDR Version:

Level 20 Twinking sounds fun and Imma gonna do it!

Long-winded stuff:

After Emerald Nightmare in Legion, after 13 years together, my guild, the ones I had the pleasure of playing with almost all went our separate ways. Was bummed for awhile that I couldn't find a new group or guild, because apparently tanking became popular over the years. I liked having that nice cushy job.

With reluctance, I canceled my sub last year. Between my career and other personal engagments, plus having no one to play with and/or general "I have been playing since the age of dinosaurs" burnout, I didn't have the time or desire to play anymore.

Fastforward to a week ago. Through no fault of my own, I am now unemployed. It sucks, sure, but I am taking it in stride. After dabbling in some fun old games from GoG, it happened, I started to get that WoW itch. I said "wth" and redownloaded, I was aware of the "hey you can play free to level 20" thing. A few things seem to have changed, so I am asking nicely for info and clarification, and at the end, I will share what I think (and hope!) is an amazing thing.

1) Do enchants work on gear again for PvP again? If so, can higher level enchants be put on lower tier BoAs or does flat iLvl still provide more return?

2) I have read conflicting things about whether you should wear "armor meant for your class" to get 5% bonus stats, is that still a thing, or is Mastery something that only applys at higher levels?
This question is relevant to me, because I have played warrior since ye olde days of yore, and love being flag carrier in those types of Battlegrounds, as such, sometimes plate isn't always the best option for stats.

3) Can F2P players join guilds? I know I can't use the mailbox, or whisper windows (sans battle.net ID).

4) I have enough gold on my main (<WoW hoarder), to activate my account for 1 month via battle token. Relevance to this is, could I use gold to activate my account, use alllll of the gold I have aquired on my level 20 (I will explain how below, thats the awesome thing I was talking about) to purchase the rest of my bank slots/reagent bank/bigger bags/other misc things I can actually get from the AH? If so, will they still be usable once my sub runs out again, since "normally", F2P accounts can't normally obtain all bank slots/reagent bank?

5) If #4 is successful, and lets say, for lack of a better argument, I make 5000g from the method I will relay to you all (the potential is WAY higher), the cap would go back to 10g. Would I still "keep" all the gold I earned through this method. I.E. the day my sub expires I have 5000, would i lose 4990 to be at 10 or would I just not be able to earn more til I am under cap.

Ok, either you have all been curious (or don't really care lolol) about this gold thing I keep talking about. Allow me to share my experience with you. I went into F2P completely blind. I made my little blood elf, strapped on some BoA gear and my Orc taxi driver and leveled to 20 fairly quickly. I was at around 9g and some change when my piddly little 6 slot bags were full of ruined leather scraps and amazing grey weapons.

NBD, I was level 20, and had bought the riding skill about a half hour earlier, traveler mammoth time! No need to use that 30 minute heartstone that I forgot to reset. I made it to my main pack, and all of a sudden I couldn't vendor anything else, despite having 8 items left. "Wtf?" I say to myself. That is when I realized there, dang they were serious about 10g cap. Wtf am I supposed to do with only 10g?

Well, for awhile after hitting ghostlands, I would run all the way back to silvermoon city every 2-3 quests to buy a Huge Brown Sack, 12 slot bag for 9g. Even with that, going back and forth every 3 quests was REALLY getting old, so after my main bags were all 12s, I sat in deep thought for a moment, trying to turn my F2P into a profitable one, in the case I might want to dabble in the expansion proper, or get some bank battlenet balance.

I scoured WoWhead for things I had access to farming/otherwise acquiring as a level 20. No pet battles (Boo!), although archaeology is a thing, with the toys that teach flightpaths, I suppose that wouldn't be "so" bad. As I was vendoring more notched shortswords to my mammoth, I made a startling and potentially life changing discovery.

(Goblin guy for horde, not sure for alliance) the repair person on the mount, sells Eternium thread, a Cata reagent if I remember correctly, for 3g a pop. Dang, that is steep when you have a 10g you might say, plus you can't even use them! Well that my friends, is the beauty of it. A kind of stock to invest in. Here's the breakdown of the math.

Through faction city reputation, a f2p player can (eventually) get all 7 faction 16 slot bags. This is the perfect amount, 4 on your person, 3 for the bank. Eternium thread costs 3g each, and vendors for 75s each, and stacks up to 200. A full stack would vendor for 150g. There are 28 slots in the bank, and 3 - 16 slot bags, courtesy of faction quartermasters for a total of 48 slots. So, initially, the bank can hold 76 stacks of 200 Eternium Thread. (76 stacks x 150g/stack = 11,400g and no AH cut!).

For sake of argument, we will assume that not all F2P people will have an authenticator, so we will pretend everyone still has a main pack with only 16 slots (for simplicity sake). So 4 - 16 bags plus 8 (half) of the main pack (keep some space for consumables or other items etc) equals 72 slots. 72 stacks times 150g a stack equals 10,800g.

10,800 + 11,400 = 22,200g

F2P accounts, if I read right, can "make" 9 unique classes. (No DKs or DHs). So, I realize it is time consuming, however, if you repeat this process on all 9 unique classes, you get twofold benefit. The most important one being, you have all 9 classes to PvP with, whatever you feel like playing that day! The other thing is, if you are someone who occasionally resubs, 22,200 x 9 characters = 199,800g. If you don't mind having duplicates for whatever reason, then 22,200 x 11 characters = 244,200g. As of the time I am typing this, that is enough for 2 tokens, can bank 1 token for bnet balance or have 2 months of time.

Last part I will need help/clarification on. It is vitally important that during the month your account is "active" you do not gain xp. That's a given, turn off xp. If you remember to turn it back "on" before your sub runs out, will you still be able to queue for BGs once your account goes inactive again? If not, then my whole plan is for nothing. ><

Also, if the earlier example works, and reagent banks/other bank slots/ bigger bags are obtainable, the math goes up immensly. Reagent bank has 98 slots. Embroidered Deep Sea bags are 32 slots. 32 slots x 11 (number of bags on person and in bank) + 28 in main bank, plus 8 for (half) of main pack.

486 slots x 150 per stack of eternium thread = 72,900g (per character)

72,900 x 9 = 656,100g or 72,900 x 11 = 801,900g

Sorry for the huge post >< I ramble. In conclusion (as you can see from all that effin math, I have some time on my hands. My "main" level 20 atm is Estradiol, a Blood Elf Prot Warrior.

TinyBear#1353 - say hi if you get bored!

Lol - very detailed post.
Sorry to hear about ur job situation. Same thing happened to me last year, took me 4 months to find casual work, and then another 2 more months to get back into full time work. It’s just a tough market at the moment :(
Hope u find some employment soon.
I’m on my phone atm so only going to keep my responses short.

1) enchants work again and u need a higher level toon to put some on BoA’s. U will require game time though to do this. Also, if u have had game time on ur account that u will play as F2P, u will be known as a Vet account. This means u have access to higher level enchants, but when unsub’d, u will have some profession bugs. Not a biggie though. Ilvl also isn’t a thing anymore.

2) armor type doesn’t matter anymore at this level. But having extra armor based on ur class type always helps ;)

3) not as a pure F2P, but as a Vet u can join guilds that u have toons in.

4) activating ur account will make u a Vet. Please be aware u will have to lock XP while ur sub is active, then unlock XP just before sub runs out. Otherwise u won’t be able to queue.
I dumped all my coin on my Vets when I unsub’d some years back. If going Vet, unlock all bank and void storage and get the biggest bags possible. Also stockpile as many high level items as possible, such as Goblin Gliders, high level sharpening stones, etc.

5) u keep all ur gold, u just won’t earn anymore till u drop below 10g.

I also had my guildies leave over the years, so now I’m the only active member, been like that for a while. I enjoy the simplicity of Vet/F2P and it’s been keeping me entertained for a while.

I hope u enjoy the Vet/F2P life ;)

A few things to consider:
If you're using a "pure f2p" account (ie, an account that has NEVER had game time), your characters will accumlate and "bank" xp. That means that when the day comes and, after so much work, you sell your thread for gold... you will automatically level up to around lv30 if you have max banked xp.

Make sure you're ready for that, or... To avoid this issue, you need to be a vet account. Ie, once you've had any amount of "subbed" / game time on the account, xp banking won't happen and your characters should stay lv 20.

My advice is to use the token you have before you truly commit to characters that you want to leave at lv20.

If you want to do something like archaeology, you need to do it as "pure f2p" because it's bugged for vets.

Sooo pick a toon, get everything out of archaeology and then use the token. OR keep your pure f2p account and create a third "vet" acct by using the wow token on an entirely new account (you can convert wow token to blizzard balance or just use the month on a new account, as the old classic game keys are almost obsolete now).

And my last piece of advice: join the lv20 discord to meet like minded people!

The account I am using is my old account, that way, if I ever decide to dust off my main, i can relocate all this gold onto one of the alts and server transfer it over. So I guess that makes it a vet account. Meaning I can rock some high level chants, eventually that is, I am in no hurry, I have 5 months and two weeks before this unemployment runs out, im going to take it easy. :p

Another old timer! Welcome!

Icehawk has pretty much got you sorted. He's our vet liaison around here.

I just wanted to chime in on a couple things.

Walnut stock is a more efficient way to stockpile gold. And your plan is an ambitious one. But man... it's gonna take forever. Godspeed on that

Two, I too enjoy warriors! Been maining twink warriors since BC. I love them. So let me be the first to tell you...

You're gonna have a rough time FCing as a prot warrior in this bracket. Just a fact of low level PVP. The mobility and survivability just isn't there like it is at end game.

Might I suggest, if you really like FCing, that you also roll a resto druid?

Not a knock on warriors, just the kit really isn't there yet for FC. They're hellaciously good at damage though. Fury is broken at this level. But resto druid is THE low level FC.

Whatever you choose, you'll have fun though.

For some reference, here's my vet warrior https://worldofwarcraft.com/en-us/character/bleeding-hollow/Fullsterkur
You can compare this warrior to the one in my signature (pure f2p) and see the vast difference in gear/enchants

And my vet resto druid that occasionally does some FC work https://worldofwarcraft.com/en-us/character/blackwing-lair/Bigstyle

5% thing was a bug in legion, it is now back to only working at 50+.
Mastery only works above level 80.
Enchants work. You can't use enchant scrolls without gametime. Ilvl is usually a Good indicator on how good an item is but some items can be better or equal to items with a higher ilvl.
You can't join a guild; you can be in guild.
Warriors are lackluster for FCing these days. Preferably you want something with movement speed and survivability. Resto druid, balance druid and resto shaman probably being your top options.

Word of advice...
Careful milking that unemployment. It will be gone before you know it and if you haven’t looked for employment you may be stuck.
As another poster already stated, it took them six months to find full time employment. The longer you are unemployed the more difficult it is to find someone that will hire you.
Good luck!

If the account was ever subscribed it is considered a ‘veteran’ account.

/cheers

even for ele shamans?

looking around, it looks like they changed it and it's now 78 and not 80 and for elemental shamans it has two tiers kicking in at 29 and 78 however I would never play 29 so I'm can't confirm it actually works at 29.

Oh Im not going to not look for work, just not going to go all out on it right now.

What is this walnut stock? Sounds interesting and a chance to make even more money (oh my poor brain, more math xD)

I might give fury a go, for now I will remain prot for those yummy instant dungeon queues to get those odd ball off set pieces I need.

Prot is nice for PvE but it's not useful for much in PvP.

Hmm can walnut stock be purchased off of the mammoth? If it involves going back to town every 2-3 quests, I may just stick to something I can buy off of the mammoth, walnut is better for sure though!

Any engineering vendor

dungeon bosses give you a few gold. clearing a full dungeon gives more than 10 gold. you can stay near an engineering vendor and teleport in and out of the dungeon to buy walnut stocks. thats if you dont get bored of queing dungeons over and over again. plus tank / healer has shorter queue times. though there might be better options if you can find expensive items to stock up on and sell on AH. im not familiar with AH prices so cant give any advice there

Probably gonna be a faster accumulation of gold to just hang out by an engineer supplier and que random dungeons and buy walnut stock after each run.

Been taking my time. Until I get into spamming dungeons, I am going around and doing all the starting zones for each faction, to lessen the rep grind for the bags when I start dungeons, building up my herb stash. I am super OCD grinder, I will probably keep Inscription until I am exalted with DMF by turning in decks.

You can make enough gold from fishing at darkmoon / selling battle pets.
Do not loot gold from those fish bags you sometimes get until you activate account.

As pure f2p the bag space will be your biggest enemy.

And making tarots is not available to starter accounts, lame >< I am having trouble finding a profession that is worth anything at skill level 100, they all look pretty useless.
