4.1 Paladin Guide

This guide is current starting at patch 4.2 and I will keep this updated the best I can because guides are afterall evolving. Paladins are currently a heavily played class with many new paladins being leveled for twinking purposes everyday, this guide does not include any grandfathered (items no longer obtainable) items and will only include gear that is considered to be the best. All of the gear pieces listed here are also what i use on a regular basis, please keep in mind that there are no Best in slot pieces only the best possible piece for what you are trying to achieve given your entire gear set. Paladin FC sets are not currently included in the guide and may be added at a later date. I have listed the gear you will need for holy, prot, and ret specs. Mixing and matching this gear will allow you to creat Holy-Shockadin, Holy-FC, and Prot-FC. There is not enough data to support the use of the newly implemented BOA tanking gear to create a Ret-dodge set but this could be in the works soon. There is also a lot of speculation that BOA leggings and rings will be implemented soon so keep an eye out for those in the next few patches. Please leave any comments or constructive criticisms in this thread. Thanks goes out to Pizza, I used his guide as a template

V. Wrap-up and Final Thoughts

I. Races

First off, you should never choose a faction based on the races you can be. Also, never compare races that are on opposite factions to each other. When choosing a faction you should do research on which faction is less populated, could use more of said class, and has a guild you're interested in joining. Once you've decided on the faction you wish to play decide what role you would like to play on your Paladin the majority of the time, offensive or defensive, or maybe you're just going to pug.

:Horde:

Tauren

-2 minute warstomp provides an essential 2 second stun that is great for getting a quick flash of light off in heavy melee combat. They also receive an extra 19 Nature resistance which gives them a 27.54% chance to resist roots and shaman interupts while receiving less nature damage in general.

Blood Elf

-Can restore a small amount of mana and silence nearby opponents with their racial. Their racial allows them to supply an extra interrupt along with the extra mana that might be needed to get the return. They also receive 19 arcane resistance which gives them a 27.54% chance to resist sheeps while receiving less damage from Mages and Druids. With the removal of dispel their resistance is key to remaining in control at all times.

:Alliance:

Draenei

-Can heal the defense with their HoT. Have an extra 1% hit which allows for gear adjustments to gain more stamina. They also receive an extra 19 shadow resistance which gives them a 27.54% chance to resist fears while receiving less shadow damage from Priest and Warlocks. With the removal of dispel and tremor totem their racial and resistance is key to remaining in control at all times.

Human

-Every man for himself 2 minute trinket and frees up a trinket slot for an extra AGM/spellpower/haste trinket.

Dwarf

-Racial provides some damage reduction and frost resistance gives 27.54% chance to resist frost spells and reduces damage of frost spells by mages. Dwarves also start with the most base str and stam on alliance side. Despite these benefits to being a dwarf they are probably the least played alliance race for paladins.

II. Talents

The talents you choose should be based on your play style and role

Holy Tree

Holy-Pure Healing Burst/Flag Carrier (3 Protector of the Innocent, 2 Judgments of the Pure, 1 Last Word)

Holy-Pure Healing Haste (3 Protector of the Innocent, 3 Judgments of the Pure) make sure you keep the haste buff up for this spec.

Holy-Shockadin (3 Protector of the Innocent, 2 Judgments of the Pure, 1 Blazing Light) There are many other ways to maximize damage this maximizes holy shock damage, play around with the first 5 talent points there are many other combos that are also good for shockadin the one i've listed provides the best survivability.

Protection Tree

Protection-Damage (3 Divinity, 2 Seals of the Pure, 1 Improved Hammer of Justice)

Protection-Flag Carrier (3 Divinity, 2 Eternal glory, 1 Improved Hammer of Justice)

Note as of 4.1 Word of Glory has a 20 second cooldown for both prot and ret specs, which makes the talent Eternal glory almost useless

Retribution Tree

Retribution- Boot enchant +5 hit (3 Crusade, 2 Improved Judgments, 1 Pursuit of Justice)

Retribution-Boot enchant Minor speed (3 Crusade, 2 Improved Judgments, 1 Rule of Law) -- Gracob currerntly prefers 5% crit increase on crusader strike given by rule of law because it is the primary nuke and hit is easily obtainable by gear

III. Professions -Key concepts, think about your playstyle and how a profession that gives stats could open up gear slots

-225 Herbalism provides a small heal and a large amount of haste which improves survivability and also sets up the paladins key finishing ability--Exo spam.

-225 skinning Gives 9 crit rating and about 3% crit at lvl 19. great for any paladin and can open up gear slots that would normally be used for crit gear for more haste, stam, str, or int items

-150 engineering, mainly used for bombs but also allows [ITEM]Green Tinted Goggles[/ITEM]

which most twinks use as a place holder until they get a better head item

-225 mining gives +70 health great for commited flag carriers, can also open up gear slots slated for stamina pieces so you can gear for more crit, haste, str, or int

IV. Gear

There's tons of gear available to 19 all paladin specs, but what really matters is how you set up your gear to obtain the best stats while maintaining hit cap (10, 5%). Notice, this guide is for players who have BoAs. If you can't or are not interested in farming BoAs then I wouldn't make a Paladin. Remember, you need to always have hit cap (10, 5%) or more. In general when gearing a Paladin you will want to maintain a high amount of armor. This means that although cloth or leather pieces may give good stats they may not be considered by most good Paladins to be the best in slot. I will be listing my primary set for each spec although I usually mix and match gear often and you should too. Although I always have a hit capped holy and FC set in my bag I sometimes take concessions when I am healing or FCing with respect to the +hit stat, the reason for this is that when I FC or heal my direct spell and melee interactions with enemy targets is significantly less and I am usually more focused on damage mitigation, and healing my team or myself which doesn't require hit cap.

HOLY

Below is a list of gear I consider when I spec holy. I will be listing Best in slot items and try to give a flavor of what I use for different play styles such as Holy-FC, Holy-Shockadin. Again you will want to mix and match but maintain a high amount of armor.

As Holy you will always want to keep 3 stack of holy power up via casting holy shock on yourself or others while traveling. You will be required to FC early if noone steps up so start making your way to the enemy flag right from the start. Alternatively if there is another option for an FC you should stick with a pack of hunters or other dps until your teams FC comes out of the base then you will transition to defense or offense as needed. If you are losing you might be able to turn the table to your teams favor by healing your DPS in mid but don't make a habit out of healing mid. Don't be worried about putting up insane healing numbers most pallies top the healing charts because they run into an enemy pack and just start spamming FoL on themselves!

Protection Paladin

I have limited experience with prot and think it is actually one of the weaker specs these days, most people go prot because they get 25% increased HP so they look OP. Prot is probably the way to spec as an FC if you have healing. I guess the interupts can be good but for pure damage ret is probably better. I would be interested to know why people who are not FCing spec prot especially after the nerf to word of glory. That being said here is the gear list.

Head

[ITEM]Venerable Mass of McGowan[/ITEM]

Enchant: [ITEM]Scroll of Enchant Weapon - Crusader[/ITEM]

Shield

[ITEM]Redbeard Crest[/ITEM]

Substitute [ITEM]Commander's Crest[/ITEM]

Retribution

Probably my favorite spec because of the big numbers you can dish out, because of this it is probably the spec most noobs like to run with. Most good ret paladins will have a keen eye for a kill shot on an FC and will train FC's hard despite dying a lot while trying to make it across mid. Ret paladins are probably most effective in bases with plenty of walls to hide behind, which make it a terrain most hunters like to avoid. Personally I like to feather in a little bit of int on my ret set which will allow for at least one extra exorcism or flash of light.

Here's my Paladins Armory: Gracob @ Elune - Game - World of Warcraft

Why would paladins want bats as pets? Bats lost their stun, finally. So, now, the question of best pally pet is an open one.

Thanks for not recognizing that this is a work in progress that I started today. I decided to use Pizza's hunter guide as a template because it seemed fairly complete and organized. I am filling in the slots right now.

So what's the point of asking for comments when you havent even bothered to remove things that say hunter yet....

best in slot lists are cool, but I think it is also good to show some of your personal gear sets.

for example, if you have a glass cannon shockadin set, what is it? people look to these guides to help them gear up, and having a more comprehensive list of interesting gear vs one set of bis is beneficial, especially for newer players who don't realize how much they can mix up their play styles with different sets of gear at this level.

Thanks for the feedback i'll try to incorporate some of these ideas

You also say that holy paladins should be using a dps mace and crusader.

Yeah I'm having a problem with the guide, When I edit the prot section is there but when i save it gets spliced out for some reason. It is still a work in progress but it is up to date.

Things got screwed up it seems because I did some editing in normal mode and some editing in advanced mode. Prot section was visible to me in normal mode but not in advanced mode. Looks like the advanced mode was translated to the official post, the edits i made in normal mode got lost in this translation. Not sure if this is the reason but that's what I saw.

well grab i just wanted to say thanks for putting time into making a guide, atleast your contributing to the site.

Hey thanks just wanted to make an updated paladin guides for all of the up and coming twinks.

Just curious as to why you would spec 3 times into protector of the innocent if you were to roll shockadin spec, i would rather spec 3 into judgements of the pure for more haste for exo spam, and also maybe even completely drop the use of protector of the innocent for 2 arbiter of light, i mean this is for a shockadin that would ideally only be healing to heal himself anyways right?

Excellent question and you are right for maximum damage output you could spec into arbiter. Speccing into Blazing light is what makes this a shockadin spec because it maximizes damage done by holy shock. The spec you suggest is also a shockadin and so is a first tier spec of 1/2/2, 3/0/2, 2/3/0, 2/1/2, etc i decided to simply give a solid spec 0/3/2 (first tier) that maximizes holy shock damage and gives good survivability. As far as damage output some would argue that the ideal spec for a shockadin is 3/0/3 because of how the haste effects exorcism. If you are starting to think for yourself about how the different talents work then the guide is doing it's job and currently I don't think a paladin guide needs to contain commentary for every permutation. That is better suited for discussion such as the one we are having. I'll make a note about the spec and try to add as many suggestions as possible.

Here is an FC set I kind of like, you can edit if you can find upgrades.. chardev 8 - WoW Cataclysm

Yeah that is a decent set but you have 4 grandfathered items....i am trying to make a guide for the new twinks. I am assuming at this point that most people with grandfathered items know what they are doing because they have been around a while. It's not hard to figure out that Deadskull shield + vitality is BIS stam set but that just isn't obtainable anymore. At the same time newer items are rapidly replacing grandfathered pieces for instance your chest piece isn't that great for FCing you should have selected one with more armor like [Item]Burnished Breastplate of Might[/Item]

Just read your comment about hit in the other thread, If you are an FC you should plan on NOT dying and if you plan on NOT dying and if you are that concerned with missing a crucial HOJ (which is a very good point, you don't want to miss those ever) then you sould have no problem using a hit pot to reach hit cap in your FC set.

Snookie said:
u should have a pure intel set

With the gear up there you should be able to make a very nice Pure intellect set, haven't thought about that too much because it would probably involve a lot of grandfathered cloth gear, let me know what I am missing (that is not grandfathered) and I will add it.
