So I have always believed that stacking pure spell dmg on a 19 lock was bis ; albeit, reduced scaling.
Can anyone make a good argument against going pure spell dmg?

My 19 warlock legacylink => https://legacyplayers.com/Armory/?charid=1171329
(using +7shadow dmg stein and pulsating heart for OH)
and i'm using https://classicdb.ch/?item=892 with +20shadow dmg enchant.

I have heard people say you need to go pure stam but i am skeptical. I think, with proper mechanical theory you should be going pure dmg.

This is a little game play I recorded, on how I play a 19 lock going full out shadow and fire dmg

----------- 1st video = game play -------------- 2nd video = gear and a little more game play

If you die too fast/much then spellpower is irrelevant, you cant cast from the graveyard. DoTs tick, but that's it.

If you don't die, then stam is less relevant as you'll have more effectiveness with more SP.

I think only the player can answer that for themselves.

edit- also, it's a question old as WoW. When I started twinking everything was DMG DMG DMG… then someone focused stam, and suddenly the entire viewpoint shifted when they began outperforming the "pro" players in the bracket.

People are sheep. Find what's BiS for YOU. Once you live thru someone's burst and then kill them... sounds pretty good.

I am not going to claim to be a "Great" lock back in the old days, but I will tell you that until WOTLK, I ran almost pure stam lock. Your job as a lock in vanilla/BC isn't damage, it's CC. In pugs, maybe do damage if you want, but in premades... keeping pressure on the FC's support ny chain fearing healers is key. Don't get me wrong, I always had multiple sets and even in premades, I did push damage too, but my job was fear fear fear.

PS. Finding all that shadow gear is easier said than done as well.

^ This.
Had a 19 ud lock in bc, and you'd only use +shadow gear for fun. Normally you would use a balanced set with emphasis on stacking stam, +shadow dmg after. Witching+30 sp along with 20 on gloves is best for overall value, the extra SP from glass cannon gear is simply not worth it 95% of the time.

I played a 19 lock in TBC and you definitely do not want to sacrifice stam for shadow damage. My build wasn't totally optimized b/c I was just learning the game back then, but if I could go back I would stack the hell out of stam. As someone already mentioned, fear is your most impactful contribution and you have enough +SP from your witching staff, 30 sp wep enchant, and 20 sp glove enchant to make your damage output significant. Plus, you'll want to use wand damage in 1v1 situations after getting dots up in order to not break your fears, and getting your hp closer to the 2k mark will make your runecloth bandages that much more impactful. Hope that helps!

Situational like lot of things in Classic/Vanilla imo. Most scenarios want Stam, but say on a scenario where you are about to try and kill a EFC on the cross with your team. (EFC trying cross flag to east/west/mid/) may be more beneficial to swap to some shadow pieces for the extra dmg.

Or if your holding flag room to secure a Cap, that extra dmg can help in killing whoever picks flag before they are able to connect to support.

Always go max dmg glass as a warlock with +shadow wrath gear everywhere. Fort/mark/kings(alliance god tier) and other buffs will make up for the stam loss

In every bracket i played (19s, 29s, 39s) max dmg is bis

you are gonna die regardless whenver you stack stam or dmg

i still averaged out 20+ kills vs premading 5-7+ kids each game on any of my warlocks(and i played 2 chars at once so i couldnt really even avoid alot dmg that was coming at me)

compared to stam stack yeah i experimented with it but you cant get any kills and die anyway but as glass at least you secure kills, your goal really is just to unleash your payload(lmao sounds so wrong)

so yeah max dmg is really really good

Ye cata is a whole different thing ^^ Vanilla/bc locks were underwhelming compared to cata/mop

My favorite time as a lock was WOTLK - but as for camaraderie and fun, BC.
